toledo: OK, OK, OK - I GIVE UP!!!!! - 03/28/08 07:30 AM
OK - I have always been a self-proclaimed lover of winter. I relish the change of seasons, the snow, the illusion of peace and cleanliness that a new snow brings. BUT - I am ready to throw in the towel - or shovel, if you prefer. To concede defeat to Mother Nature. I am publicly announcing that I have lost the game of the winter season. I am no longer the "great champion of winter" that I have been for the last 50+ years. So, in the interest of full disclosure, I am hereby passing my torch of admiration of the

toledo: Whatcha think? - 03/25/08 04:14 PM
Well, the first quarter of 2008 is almost over. In the Toledo, Ohio area this has been a time of roller coaster rides and thrill-seekers. At least in reference to real estate. In the Point Place neighborhood of Toledo, Ohio there is a very wide spread in pricing and values. Our MLS uses zip codes to categorize areas and that puts Point Place at a slight disadvantage when doing comps. The zip code for Point Place is 43611. This zip code encompasses an area of North Toledo, commonly known as the Olde North End, that has suffered some serious setbacks when it

toledo: Boating In January - Ice Boating That Is! - 01/27/08 10:18 AM
POINT PLACE - TOLEDO, OHIO Saturday morning - light snow falling, SE breeze about 8-10 mph, gray sky, 40% humidity. Typical winter day in northwest Ohio. But this morning is a little different. The Toledo Ice Yacht Club is having a race on Maumee Bay. Imagine - sailboating in January! In the snow! The bay is well frozen and the light dusting of snow on the ice makes the whole area look surreal. While I don't know much about ice boating, I did figure out that this is one adventurous bunch of people! And watching the sailors get their craft ready to sail

toledo: Christmas Caroling, Santa and Community - 12/20/07 11:09 PM
Tonight was the night for Caroling in the Park. This is an annual holiday event that takes place at Friendship Park in the Point Place neighborhood of Toledo. The attendance was phenomenal, the children were singing like angels and the adults were enjoying the festivities as much as the children. The Ottawa River Elementary School had its' choir in attendance singing carols - and they were just adorable! They ranged in age from about 5 to 11 and each child had their own charisma. Some were a little fidgety but that's to be expected. Especially since they were the opening act for Santa's

toledo: Let It Snow!!!!!!!!!!!! - 12/17/07 02:22 AM
Wow! We are finally going to get some snow! At least that is what the local television stations were touting on Saturday morning. But they have been known to make mistakes. :)) Supposedly we were in for a decent snow storm. Going to receive some 6 - 10 inches of that beautiful white stuff. But I was skeptical. Being in that little pocket at the western loop of Lake Erie tends to leave us out of the snow pattern. Southeastern Michigan will get it, east and west of us will get it, south of us will get it ---- but all we

toledo: Preservation, Perseverance or Both? - 12/10/07 10:12 PM
On awakening this morning the news was constantly reporting on the icy road conditions, ice covered power lines and traffic accidents all over the city. Since I had no scheduled appointments and my day was pretty much my own, I decided that once the sun came up (there was no sun today - at all!) that I would throw on some jeans and my snow boots and take off with the camera to gather some inspiration - compliments of Mother Nature. I called a friend, picked him up and we stopped and got coffee at the Java Mill. Then we headed north to

toledo: Everything you ever wanted to know about Toledo... - 12/03/07 12:01 AM
but were afraid to ask! I came upon a site recently that has held my interest tremendously. I hope it will intrigue you just enough to explore our wonderful city - even if your exploration is done through a computer. The Toledo History Museum has recently been awarded non-profit status and is getting ever closer to becoming a reality. I am taking the liberty of copying portions of a most interesting list of Toledo's claims to fame. I bet there are some items you recognize here, but would have never connected them to little ol' Toledo, Ohio. Singer Theresa Brewer is from the east side

toledo: WE WON!! We REALLY WON!!!!!! - 11/27/07 10:54 PM
Wow! Not sure where to start. Toledo, Ohio was chosen to attend the LivCom awards ceremony in London, England. Our fair city had been placed in the running as The Most Liveable Community in our population category. We were among six other areas from around the globe. The Toledo Blade ran a story about our achievement, as a city, and we should all be very proud. While we weren't in 1st Place it is very exciting to be in the company of other cities like Malmo, Sweden and Lyon, France. I am just thrilled at this comment: Toledo was judged among seven communities, and the

toledo: Attitudes on Housing Relief - 11/26/07 10:30 PM
I have just finished reading an article in the that speaks to the matter of the federal government providing a remedy for relief in the foreclosure crisis that we are experiencing. As with most things, there are portions that I can agree with and portions that I think are pure drivel. For instance: "...the Senate stalled legislation that would strengthen the Federal Housing Administration's mortgage programs, a key resource for homeowners who need to refinance out of adjustable-rate loans into more affordable fixed-rate ones." So, in the classic manner of political double-speak, there is a rising cheer of "Let's save the folks

toledo: Getting the skinny! You can do it! - 11/25/07 10:55 PM
A while back I did a post on the advantages of knowing your city/town. I am a firm believer that knowledge is the best tool we can have, and this belief proves true time and again. Today a friend in California sent me a link to a remarkable little online tool that I thought would be worth sharing. A unique little program called Zip Skinny. I started searching my local zip codes and was surprised at the information available. I live in the Point Place area of Toledo. This is an area that started out as a vacation/resort area 100 years ago because it

toledo: Mother Nature's Painting - 11/13/07 04:12 PM
Today was one of those incredibly beautiful days - sunshine, mild temperatures, very slight breeze and a true Fall feeling. The air was a little more crisp, the smells a little more earthy. As I was driving to pick up some signs and take care of some errands I found my truck turning into the Wildwood Metropark. I couldn't control the wheel as we wound around the curvy roads and into the parking area. I swear that truck was possessed! And I'm glad it was! I grabbed my camera and set out to spend a few minutes walking among the trees and letting

toledo: Unexpected gifts ---- Life is full of them! - 11/01/07 10:13 PM
Ya know, some days we wake up and realize that we take way too much for granted. We see people every day, nod our heads, smile, wave and continue on with our lives. But...did we really see people? Did we pay attention to their response when we smiled or waved? Probably not. We have a young family that lives next door and they are struggling - as do many young families. The father works 2, sometimes 3 jobs, mom is handicapped from a childhood accident and there are two little ones that are a breath of fresh air - most of the

toledo: Marblehead Lighthouse - Revisited - 10/15/07 12:53 AM
This past Saturday my husband and I made the trip out to Marblehead, Ohio. The Marblehead Lighthouse Festival was in full swing and the lighthouse was open for tours. I had previously posted about Marblehead and the area around it. A small lakeside area that is full of beautiful homes, expansive views, fresh air and all forms of water related recreation. Each time we go out there I start thinking that maybe I will choose to retire there instead of some of the more publicized locations. In the literature that was given out at the festival there is a brief history of the

toledo: Visiting a Legend - The Voice of the Detroit Tigers - Ernie Harwell - 10/11/07 09:21 PM
Wow! Tonight I had the opportunity to attend a fundraiser for the United Way. The guest of honor was Ernie Harwell - The Voice of the Detroit Tigers. A Hall of Fame broadcaster! Right here in Toledo, Ohio! Wow! And a truly gentle man. While I can't say I'm a huge fan of baseball, nor do I know much about it, I truly will cherish the memories of Mr. Harwell's stories, his modest demeanor and his wonderfully simple, yet elegantly eloquent, stories. For those of you that are interested in baseball, I urge you to read up on Ernie Harwell. His beginnings

toledo: YeeeeeeeeeHawwwwwwwwwwww! Mid State Finals Rodeo - 10/09/07 09:50 PM
Last Saturday the hubby and I went to the Mid State Finals Rodeo in Monroe, Michigan. Rodeos are quite a treat up here, so when there is one taking place within 50 miles we always try to go. While this one was small it was still a lot of fun. The Monroe County Fairgrounds is a large facility with some very nice buildings. I'm sorry we missed the fair this year, but you can bet I'll be watching for it next year! Here are some photos to enjoy. I apologize in advance for the low quality. I was feeling adventurous and kept messing

toledo: FUN! Old cars, golden oldies music and FUN! - 09/14/07 02:27 PM
Last evening was perfect for the local car enthusiasts to host their hot rod show. The sun was still shining, the breeze light and refreshing and temperatures in the high 60's to low 70's. A day made for this type of event. If you enjoy classic cars, hot rods, custom paint jobs and golden oldies music then you would certainly have had a good time walking around with us. The cars and music caused many of the attendees to wax nostalgic. And the music? Well, you certainly remember the Blues Brothers, don't you? Well, Jake and Elroy were alive and well here

toledo: The Passing of Summer - 09/05/07 12:33 AM
Well, it has finally happened. Summer has started the last lap of the season and many people are sad to see it end. But not me. I'm a winter person. Colder the better. But that's another story. During the summer there is so much going on that we sometimes lose sight of all the things that there are to do - right in our own backyard. All those little things that we take for granted. I'm guilty of it, as I think are most people. While we were dealing with some family issues the last concert of the season took place on the
