There is so much local Civil War history in Lynchburg, Virginia but for the history buff, a trip to Appomattox County, Virginia is a must. Appomattox is located approximately 18 miles east of Lynchburg and holds a significant place in American history. It was here that the Civil War came to an end in April, 1865. Appomattox is a small city in a largely rural county.

railroad: Historic Appomattox Railroad Festival - This Weekend- October 13 & 14, 2007 - 10/11/07 01:15 PM

Come out to Historic Appomattox, Virginia this weekend, October 13-14, 2007 for its 35th annual Railroad Festival. Norfolk & Southern Railroad donated the Appomattox Depot to the Town of Appomattox and this has become one of the largest festivals in Virginia. This event drew 30,000 people last year. There will be a parade, live music, arts & craft vendors, food, demonstrations, games and rides for the kids. There are lots of great shops on Main Street to peruse and the railroad station where there are train exhibits on display.
