There are many small wineries in the Smith Mountain Lake area, but up to now Franklin County, Virginia hasn’t been known for its wine (though it is well known for distilled spirits……but that’s another story). In December, 2008, H.T. and Rhonda Page opened the first winery in Franklin County to bottle fruit wines: Brooks Mill Winery in Wirtz.

This View at Smith Mountain Lake Will Remain The Same-Forever.
This is great news- thanks to a donation to the Commonwealth of Virginia by Appalachian Power (a subsidiary of Appalachian Electric Power), 4022 acres of land at Smith Mountain Lake will remain permanently protected from development. A conservation easement was recorded in late January on land in Bedford and Pittsylvania Counties. The easement is co-held by Virginia Outdoors Foundation and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Thirty years disappeared at the lake last night- suddenly I was sixteen again! STYX performed at Mariner's Landing, the second act in their Summer Concert Series. We arrived early in the afternoon and decided to get a bite to eat at The Pointe Restaurant. The band was just unloading the bus and we actually said hi to one of the band members on the way in. So, after having our boat in for service three times in the last month, we eagerly picked the Sea Doo up and headed to the lake. After launching and starting the engines with difficulty, we were off. Since our house is in the next cove, we decided to take go over to take some photo's. Since it's a no wake cove, we slowed down. Bad idea. Neither engine would turn over. One sounded as if it was going to detach from the boat altogether. We were not happy.

Two weeks ago, "Bob The Boat Guy" did some work on our 18' Sea Doo so we decided to take it out for a late afternoon run and have dinner at one of the restaurants where you can dock and eat overlooking the lake. What a way to spend an afternoon. We thought.

Smith Mountain Lake is a beautiful, 20,600 acre lake located about an hour west of Lynchburg. The lake was created in the 1960's to generate electricity. There are 500 miles of shoreline spanning Bedford, Franklin and Pittsylvania Counties with gorgeous mountain views all around.
Boating season is almost here and every season there are accidents. Safety should be a top concern, so please follow the rules and make sure you have the REQUIRED EQUIPMENT on board. May 3rd is the date set for the 21st annual Clean Up at Smith Mountain Lake. I love that neighborhoods pitch in and that there are organized collection sites around the lake where volunteers can take the debris pulled from the lake. Mountain View Shores residents will meet at the boat launch at 9am and divide into work groups to tackle chores in the neighborhood. One of the best ideas I've seen for collecting debris is a kiddie pool floating on the surface of the water. Of course someone has to be IN the water, but that's beside the point! Though it rained on and off most of this afternoon, it was still a beautiful day to be at the lake. Trees are budding, daffodils are in bloom and the lake looks like it's back to its normal level. One of the things that's missing for many residents at Smith Mountain Lake is internet service. We haven't even turned a phone service on at our house, our cells work fine.
