This is one of my favorite local destinations and it will be re-opening to the public April 1, 2009. The Poplar Forest estate originally consisted of over 4800 acres. Part of the Kaleidoscope Events and what a wonderful opportunity for the kids! An Archaeology Open House will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Thomas Jefferson's Bedford County summer retreat, Poplar Forest. The archaeologists at Poplar Forest will share their latest findings at the current excavation site. They will provide a behind the scenes look at an archaeology lab. If you've never taken a field trip to Poplar Forest, this is the time to go. Tours will be held at 11;15am, 12:15pm, 1:15pm, and 2:15. Located in central Virginia, Bedford County was formed in 1754 and was named for the Fourth Duke of Bedford, England. The city of Bedford was established in 1839, though at the time it was called Liberty. Forest, Virginia is located just outside of Lynchburg and is still mostly rural with beautiful views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. With a population around 8,500, subdivisions include Lake Vista, Forest Lakes, Poplar Forest, Ivy Hill and a number of recent developments along Perrowville, Hooper and Everett Roads.
