Cartier Home Inspections: Mobile Alabama wins Northrop Grumman Air Force Refueling Tanker Contract

What "GREAT!" news for Mobile Alabama yesterday. Our area is fixing to "bust at the seams". Northrup Grumman has been awarded the 40 Billion Dollar contract to build the new Air Force Refueling Tanker here in Mobile, Alabama. We already have ThyssenKrupp Steel Mill, Air Bus, NASCAR Track, and the Cancer Center, etc. coming to South Alabama, not to mention all the vendors and sub-contracting companies which attach themselves to all of these industries. This looks like a great moment in time for the Real Estate Industry around here. Investors are going to take note and want to rush in an anchor themselves to the Mobile, Alabama, Northwest, Florida and the Mississippie Gulf Coast. I can see our local builders and sub-contractors with a smile on their faces. It's about time to get back to work!

"Prepare for Rain."

It was to hot to go outside yesterday so I took out my DVD of "FACING THE GIANTS" and popped it in the DVD player as I worked on letters and emails. I was fortunate to be able to see this movie premier in Montgomery, Alabama some time back. I highly recommend this movie.

There is an illustration of two farmers during a draught. One sat around wating for rain and the other prepared his fields for rain. The old gentleman, in the movie, asked the Coach, who felt as if he were a failure and had lost all hope, "Which one are you?".

I ask you all this same question, "Which one are you?"

When the Housing Market picks up, I'm gona to be ready! How many ears of corn come from one seed? How many seeds come from one stalk?

Hang in there! Prepare for rain! Plant a seed everyday!

One of my favorite verses is Psalm 81:10: "Open your mouth wide and I will fill it." You can't fill a bucket that is turned upside down and your sitting on it waiting for rain.

Code of Dress has got to be shorts

My truck themometer was 101. The dress code in LA (Lower Alabama) has now become shorts. "Well, my wife thinks I have great looking legs?" Anyway, I inspected a 100 hundred year old house with a stairway leading into the attic. My Infrared Themometer read 146 degrees and this was a cloudy day. My fellow Inspectors, this is not a place for the faint of heart. We do not have to enter if it is to hot, especially if we are in the residence alone. In LA, cool basements are few and far between but HOT ATTICS are everywhere.

Don't forget your water and an extra shirt.

Memorial Day

Ginnie an Me have traveled to Panama City, Florida for the weekend. A few days off with the family. The wind is cool and the water is fairly calm as we ride around on the Golf Cart. I brought my fishing gear but I have have taken on a Spring cold and feel pretty rotten at the moment. Drugs are wonderful.

Memorial Day is my Grandfather, Peter Cartier, an Infantryman in WW1. I have pictures of him marching through France. I can hear him talking in broken English. My Grandfather was a Frenchman, himself. He died when I was 18 years old. I remember traveling to Lowell Mass. for his military funeral. Dad was a railroad man, so we traveled by train from Mobile Alabama to Lowell Mass. What a trip!

My Dad, Jerome Cartier Sr., did a tour in the Navy during WW2 and he just celebrated his 80th birthday. He is tough as a stump. This Frenchman does 100 push-ups every day, rides his bike 2 miles and fishes almost everyday. I think he knows every fish in the Mobile Delta by their first name.

I grew up during the Viet Nam era. I was a student at Mobile College. We were drafted by lottery numbers, according to your birthday. My number was 289. I was classified 1-A for one year, but was never called. I had several friends who got their invitation to go. Some never returned. "What Price Freedom!"

I am proud of my heritage. I am proud of my country. Thank you, GI's for your sacrifice. I salute you.

I was called back to my home town, Satsuma, Alabama, to do an Inspection this past Saturday afternoon. For your information, we have a Steel Mill coming to town. We also have a NASCAR racing facility with six tracks headed our way. My Realtor friend said Real Estate is breaking loose. The prospect of thousands moving to our part of the country is causing the sale of homes and land to start moving. He and his staff were working all weekend showing property.

I am excited at what the future holds for the Alabama Gulf Coast, Baldwin, Mobile and Washington Counties.

Mother's Day

This past May 9th, my Mother passed away 40 years ago. I can still picture this 5 ft. 4 inch lady who loved to sing. Me and her sang a duet together when I was 12. I'll never forget that night. She saw that I went to church every Sunday and she took me.

She was the personal secretary of the President of a local Paper Mill until I was 6, after that she stayed home with me and my brother. Boy, could she cook. She loved to bake and there was always cakes, pies, or cookies in our home. This great lady went home to be with the Lord when I was just 15.

I had the greatest Mother in the whole world. She will be missed again this "Mother's Day."

What a nice Cottage. Close to the Bay. The Cottage was a rebuild. They kept the framing, hardwood flooring and doors. There were very few problems that would make a Home Inspection Report juicy, you know, a Realtors nightmare. The home was around 1300 sq. ft., I could sell my children and it would be the perfect house for me and Gin.

I finished the inside and outside, then grabbed my coveralls and headed for the crawlspace. I opened the side hatch to entered to find "Dirt". I hate to get dirty. All the duct work was in here which means I have to get a little closer to the dirt. Did I mention,"I hate to get dirty!" The dirt may have been dirty but the temperature was just right. At least I didn't sweat. I inspected from one end to the other and found why I was so comfortable. Two floor ducts, going to the living area of the house were not connected. Not Good!

I mentioned to the seller, who was home at the time, of what I found and she immediately contacted here HVAC contractor. She had not noticed any change in there gas/power bill. I noted what I had found in my report.

Who Took The Copper?

I received a call from a client who was interested in buying old houses in Mobile. He needed an inspection as soon as possible. He was dealing with a seller out of California. I made an appointment to meet him last Friday afternoon. He walked me across the street from his business where a house stood that was built in the thirties. It reminded me of the neighborhood I grew up in, living room, dinning room, kitchen, bath and two bedrooms. I began in the inside and noticed the plumbing was not turned on. The house had been vacant for a while so I went to the water meter and turned on the water to finish my inspection. Still no water.

I ventured outside and heard water running. Not just running, but pouring out from under the house. I found an opening in the skirting surrounding the house and went in for a better look after I turned the water off at the meter. I discovered the dreaded copper thief had been there before me. All the copper water pipe was gone. The client used the Inspection Report to get out of the deal. Another happy customer.

FEMA

Spent a day traveling to get FEMA certified. You can never have to much education. I went to Parr.com and filled out the application and then registered for the nearest class. It was not be a problem for any Home Inspector. If a weather catastrophe should hit anywhere in these United States or it's Territories, there is an opportunity to make some extra monies.

All of FEMA's work is contracted out to two contractors. FEMA provides the computers and the program isn't to hard. If you are interested, check them out.

I'd rather work than talk?

The hardest part about the Home Inspection business is talking. I mean, talking up our business. I'd almost, (maybe not almost, but close), rather go to the Dentist than speak to Realtors at their morning meetings. Ginnie makes me but on my "Sunday go to Home Inspections clothes". I don't see that I look much better either way but, I guess, Ginnie thinks I need all that help I can get.

I think, on my next meeting, I'm gonna talk about my truck. They ought to hire me just for my truck. Boy!, do I have a fine truck! "That's a good idea, Jerome!" A "GREAT" way to get a sale is to park my truck in front of your clients "House To Be" and expect the sale. While I am there, I might as well do a Home Inspection and make it worthwhile.

Ivy's teacher called me to show my pictures from working in Americas, Georgia in the aftermath of the Tornados, March 1st. I also showed my pictures of meeting Former President Jimmy Carter and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter. We had a great time and we were received very well. My daughter said that I did not even embarrass her. That was good news.

After my presentation, the class asked questions. Amazing what 5th graders can ask. I shared with them how Math, Science, History, Geography, and English were used in an Inspection. We had a wonderful time. I'm a "Fortunate Dad".

How Bout This Attic!

I inspected a house for a young couple, fixing to get married, on Wednesday afternoon. This house was built in 1977 and was rebuilt in 2002 after it had sustained substantial fire damage. The house was 1400 Sq. Ft. and was rebuilt to code. It looked like this couple was getting something real nice for a starter home.

I went out to the truck and got my ladder so I could climb through the scuttle hole into the attic and was surprised to find the rafters charred black. The owner had changed all the visible wood structure in the house except what you see. I inspected everyone for integrity. They look worse than they appear. By the time I finished the inspection I was just as black. I found out that the building inspector had approved the re-use.

The New "Shoot-Zoo"!

I got up this morning to take the dog out. Ginnie got a new dog yesterday, a "Shoot-Zoo". I can't bring myself to say the real name. I'm afraid Momma will here from Heaven and come back and wash my mouth out with soap. Any how? It was cold when I took the Shoot-Zoo out for her morning...you know what.

Too cold. Winter in April, unheard of! Winter in the South, unacceptable! Winter during Spring Break, not allowed! Maybe hurricane season will be pushed back to November. I doubt it? It's warm weather that gets people out of their "Old" homes and gets them looking for "New" homes. If people aren't buying "New" homes, I have to stay home and walk the "Shoot-Zoo", Unthinkable!
