How Do You Get Rid of an Old Computer?... - 02/26/08 12:23 PM
One of my clients was preparing for his move out 2 weeks ago. As we headed toward the close of escrow, he ordered a "dumpster" to be put in front of his home so he could give the 'heave ho' to a lot of stuff... Among the stuff was an old computer monitor and tower that was too slow and no longer useful. When the trash company came to pick up the dumpster, they neatly placed the monitor and computer at the driveway and took off with the trash. They didn't do that that because they thought he might have mistakenly put

U.S. History of Church and State... - 02/26/08 09:06 AM
In Orange County we have several cities with the guts to again allow slogo's like "In God We Trust" around city hall. Remember when that (on all coins and paper money) was never controversial? Now, that and more is controversial, so I thought you might like to see a history of Church and State in the USA... 1791: Congress ratified the "Bill of Rights" respecting an establishment of religion. 1833: Congregational Church in Massachusetts is the last to be disestablished. 1940: In Cantwell v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court ruled for he first time that the free-exercise clause of the First Amendment applies not just to

Small Business is the Only Economic Boost... - 02/26/08 08:36 AM
Now I have a new reason to be proud as a 'small business', owning my Independent Brokerage for 14 years. California small businesses continued to add jobs and increase the average paycheck in January according to the largest Internet payroll service, SurePayroll. I'm proud and happy to be a 'Small Business' as an Independent Brokerage, although I also liked working for large Brokers numerous years before going independent. Now, Orange County is dominated (95%) by small businesses (those with 50 or less employees), which is a sharp contrast to several decades ago when 1 or 2 major employers controlled the majority of

Would You Still Fly to Orange County if the Airport Name Changed? - 02/26/08 12:45 AM
Well...the fight is on! The old John Wayne enthusiasts are in a huff because the County of Orange has proposed that our airport (currently named John Wayne Airport) should have the words Orange County in it, rather than John Wayne. Hello? This is one of the coolest looking and fastest flowing little airports in the USA! Everyone knows that! And they don't fly here because the name of the airport is the John Wayne Airport, they fly here for business and for vacations, shopping, research and development. John Wayne was a great Oscar winning actor and he is a legacy in the entertainment industry. But, come

Prosecuters Widen Subprime Probes... - 02/26/08 12:28 AM
Federal criminal prosecutors are stepping it up! The US Attorney's Office and Justice Department are very interested in Wall Street...and it's not to buy stocks! These offices, with bases in Manhattan have notified the SEC that they want more information about Merrill Lynch. This move comes as the SEC has upgraded its Merrill Lynch probe to a formal investigation. Probes of those on Wall Street include: Brooklyn US Attorney's office: criminal investigations of Bear Stearns and UBS. Manhattan US Attorney's office: requested information on Merrill Lynch SEC: three dozen probes, including formal probes of Merrill Lynch, UBS, Bear Stearns, Morgan Stanley and Citigroup. FBI: investigating 14 companies,

Begging the Question...Is There an Increase in Panhandlers? - 02/26/08 12:05 AM
Some people say they see some good looking and well dressed young kids 'begging for spare change' outside restaurants and coffee shops, in and around shopping malls and around various towns. These kids don't seem to be poor, homeless or in need of anything other than a want for a cup of java from Starbucks. This begs the question...sign of the times or sign of the times? In other words, is it the economic climate that has created the surge in beggars or is it just more socially acceptable to beg for spare change? Do we practice up our responses when asked for

Economc Storm Clouds Gather... - 02/25/08 11:51 PM
How does a recession come? Is there any warning? Should we all watch CNBC for a hint? Well, it didn't take long for this recession to hit. And there wasn't too much banter about it. This recession didn't come with a whimper...it came with a bang! It came swiftly after subtle hints and fears and dialogue on CNBC. It came because Mr. Bernanke is an inflation hawk and ignored signs that we all saw in September and October of 2007. Well the past several weeks have brought a series of indications that the economy has entered a period of retraction. Wal-mart Stores and

That Familiar Cry..."Play Ball" Hits Orange County - 02/25/08 11:33 PM
I've been waiting to hear it..."Play Ball"...that familiar sound announcing the start of a baseball game. I'm not so sure it will sound exciting for professional baseball this year, with all the controversy surrounding the use of performance enhancing drugs. But...Little League Baseball is back and as big or bigger that ever! This past weekend, Little League Baseball kicked off it's 2008 season. And this is real fun! Kids across the County of Orange are in gear and playing America's favorite pastime. Beginning from Peanut League 5 year olds to Pony League 12 and 13 year olds...baseball is back for 2008 -

How Much Weight Can We Lose in California? - 02/25/08 11:25 PM
Let's imaging that everyone in California decided to go on a diet...We would have to lose 360 million pounds just to get back to where we were 10 years ago. That's right...we're eating and eating in California. In the last decade we've gained 360 million pounds! Did you know...the leading cause of death after tobacco is obesity? Obesity costs lives and drains California of billions of dollars a year in health care costs, lost productivity and workers' compensation. We can address this problem where it starts by developing programs to prevent and manage childhood obesity. There now are after school programs with parents

Cost of Running a Home...Up in 2007 - 02/25/08 11:13 PM
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released year end data for Southern California that shows the cost of living in a home (housing inflation) rose 5.1% in 2007. Sad to see another cost going up in a deflating economic environment. Believe it or not...this is a good news story because the number is down 6% from 2006. Despite the dip, of the 27 regions tracked, Southern California was 4th highest for inflation (but the weather is great!). The top cities for rising costs to run a home were Honolulu and Miami. Housing inflation accounts for 46% of the CPI (Consumer Price Index), which

Will Auto Dealers have a '30 year Mortgage'? - 02/20/08 12:19 PM
Auto dealers are trying to ride out the worst downturn in automobile sales in the past decade. I'm hoping they don't resort to sub-prime loans! Seriously, several manufacturers (Toyota and General Motors) have added an 84 month loan to their portfolio of products hoping to lure those who want a great car at an affordable payment. This reflects the lengths that auto dealers will go to so as to avoid the 0 interest or hefty cash rebates that have been used in the recent past to sell cars but really hurt profits. Expect a slightly higher interest rate on a 7 year auto

Saying I Love You...with Silver? - 02/20/08 12:06 PM
Forever, gold has been the standard when expressing love with a gift. Recently at Valentine's Day I wondered what jewelry stores were thinking with prices for gold having hit well over $900 per ounce on the world market... Does that mean people look at 14 carat rather than 18 carat gold? Or, can it mean that silver becomes the new way to say 'I love you' when gift giving? Diamonds anyone? Reports show that silver mines are booming and old abandoned mines are being re-opened...personally, I think silver jewelry can be very classy and elegant looking when crafted properly. Tiffany has alwaysdone a great job

Sanity... While Renting Out Your Second Home! - 02/20/08 11:45 AM
Some people buy a vacation home after repeated visits to an area that they love. They start working the equation of ownership vs. the money they are spending to enjoy time in their 'special area'. Eventually when all things are considered, the prospect of ownership usually wins out and a second home purchase is made...using a qualified professional Realtor to facilitate the search, negotiation and ultimate transaction. After all, there is an opportunity for tax benefits and future appreciation to enhance the fact that they now own a little piece of that area they love visiting. So, the decorating begins and items are tastefully

Downsizing Can Provide a Fresh Start... - 02/19/08 04:01 PM
Many times I've thought about... that little cottage by the sea when the kids are all grown and gone through college. Here are some tips for others considering a similar move to a smaller home... 1) Don't take everything with you... This is a great time to sort through your things, donate some items and let go of things you were keeping unnecessarily. 2) Embrace a new decorating style... I like Mediterranean designs and antiques, but in a downsize, maybe it's a minimal look or contemporary. Embrace change. 3) Don't clutter your space... Consider the scale of your rooms and scale furnishings and accessories accordingly.

Cities Scramble to Cope with Surge of Vacant Homes... - 02/19/08 03:28 PM
Nationwide the homeowner-vacancy rate, which measures the number of vacant homes for sale, rose to 2.8% in the 4th quarter of 2007. That matches the record (also set earlier in the year 2007) and could be the highest since the Great Depression when an exodus of Americans left the middle of our country for the west coast. The vacancies are at the highest level since the 1930's was confirmed by Mark Zandi, chief economist for Moody's. Empty homes not only depress property values, they weigh on the collective psyche of communities. It's like when a team gets on a losing streak

Massages...Therapy or Hank Panky? - 02/19/08 02:48 PM
It is estimated that 25% of Americans get massage on a regular basis but only 30% of those people use it as thereapy to help treat injuries or serious medical conditions. This statistic is from the American Massage Thereapy Association. Now the rest of those massages? I'm not going there... Researchers have found that massage can complement medical treatments by strengthening the immune system, increasing the range of motion and reducing pain and swelling. This type of touch therapy has also been shown to treat migraines, lower blood pressure and alleviate the severe side effects some cancer patients receive from their treatment. A

Ocean Currents Can Provide Electricity... - 02/19/08 02:22 PM
The world's most sustained ocean current is about 15 minutes off the Florida coast. It is the mighty Gulf Stream, which rushes by at nearly 8.5 billion gallons per second. Yes, I said per second and better than that...it never stops. This presents a tantalizing new possibility for scientists. It can be a new and plentiful source of clean energy...an interrupted source of clean energy! Watch out oil cartels! Florida Atlantic University researchers say the current could some day be used to drive thousands of underwater turbines to produce as much energy as perhaps 10 nuclear plants. This could possible supply one-third

How could I resist this opportunity to defend Real Estate! Facts are facts, sales are at a 20 year low. Bay Area Considering a "Save-The-Planet-Tax"... - 02/16/08 06:57 PM
San Francisco Bay Area air-pollution regulators have proposed an annual fee on thousands of businesses based on how much greenhouse gas they emit. To date, this may be the 1st ever attempt at a tax like this in California or anywhere else. The AQMD (Air Quality Management District) said that "the public is demanding that we be part of the solution", as reported by a norcal newspaper. And so, the agency might impose a 4.2 cents fee per metric ton of carbon dioxide emissions on oil refineries, power plants, factories, restaurants and other small businesses. As an example of this tax,

I'm lucky to have very limited if any back pain and when I do, I just "work thru it" like I was told in high school football and like I was told by my Dad. But, there are many who suffer from back pain. The rising cost of health care may not be keeping up with the results being sought by back pain sufferers. The total cost of treating back pain has

Your Happiest Years....20's, 40's or 60's - 02/16/08 01:02 PM
Can middle age be depressing? According to data collected from people spanning 72 countries, happiness follows a u-shaped curve. That curve suggests that people in their 20's and people in their 60's are the happiest. Those in between? You guessed it...they are depressed! We all know there are varied levels of depression. So, let's think about this carefully. Those "in between" years we are consumed by our career, forming and caring for our family, perhaps caring for our parents, raising teens, establishing retirement funds, health care considerations, housing costs, cars, boats, other adult toys, dreams not coming to fruition, limited vacation time...and

Melanoma...A Clue for a Cure - 02/10/08 10:42 PM
Just about everyone will warn you to wear your sun block lotion when you're outdoors these days. Sun over exposure has been the blame for skin cancer for as long as I can remember (although we defied it as kids - could never get enough sun & fun). However, research is showing that a missing protein may explain why some skin cells advance to a deadly skin cancer known as melanoma rather than simply developing into harmless moles. Part of our natural defense to combat cancers comes from a protein known as IGFBP7. The protein can be made in a synthetic form now,

4 Legged Victims of the Housing Crisis... - 02/04/08 10:52 AM

Some wild cat colonies are resulting. Facts are, nobody is thinking about the pet problems associated with the surge of foreclosures. Animal shelters are overflowing and those being foreclosed on seem to say...'I've got myself and my family to worry about...how can I take along a dog or cat'? Many landlords do not allow pets in rentals, and rentals are the only place a foreclosed family can turn

Squeamish About Drinking Waste Water? - 02/04/08 08:45 AM
Sewage recycling programs are a viable cure for the water shortage across our land, but most can't can't seem to swallow that idea. Does drinking treated sea water seem more attractive? Apparently so, as desalination is accepted and operation plants are in place. Desalinization of sea water can cost anywhere from $800 to $2,000 per acre-foot to produce, compared to $525 per acre-foot for recycled sewage. From a cost perspective, which one do you think will win out? Voters consistently block sewage recycling programs, preferring desalination, but plenty of unpalatable waste from our land flows into the sea. Think about the metals, pesticides, pathogens

Mayors Meet in DC Regarding Foreclosure in Their Cities... - 02/04/08 12:20 AM
Local governments are scrambling to deal with the foreclosure lists in their respective cities. Mayors have been invited to gather in Washington DC to discuss problems associated with foreclosures. Many localities have inquired about establishing a line of communication with the 50% of people who never contact their lender before their home is foreclosed. Foreclosures cause a strain to cities with abandoned homes, abandoned buildings and apartments, uncut lawns, vandalism, unpaid property taxes and a detrimental affect on the neighboring community(s). Cities estimate that an empty house costs that city an average of $34,000 for inspections, court actions, extra law enforcement and visits

For as long back as this country was formed, people had developed a habit of 'throwing things away'. What's wrong with that? Nothing I suppose, because of careful planning there are landfills everywhere where all our trash goes to when we 'throw things away'... We did the best we could with our planning but at some point in time we'll have to come to grip with the factors facing our children and theirs. Those challenges are more than just fuel and water. They include waste and recycling... We are running out of landfill and so I wonder what happens in 10 or 20 years
