california: Homeownership Declines - 01/25/12 08:26 AM

Recently while browsing the latest California Real Estate Magazine, I came to learn that California is among the top five states with the lowest homeownership rates nationwide, according to the “Housing Characteristics: 2010” report by the U.S. Census Bureau.

With homeownership rate of 55.9%, California ranked second in the nation, falling behind New York’s rate of 53.5%.

Of California’s 37.3 million residents, 22.2 million live in the Los Angeles, San Diego, & San Francisco metropolitan regions. Because of this concentration in large urban areas, more than 30% of Californian families live in multi-home residences (which include apartments … (2 comments)

california: Did housing help fuel your personal wealth this decade? - 12/30/10 07:08 AM
Taking a look back at the past decade, did housing help fuel your personal wealth? Did it help you in a good way or a bad way?
The California Association of Realtors reported California's median home price was $248,250 in 2000 and was $304,220 in October 20210. Sure, the median home price peaked mid-decade at $567,000, but we must look at the long-term overview which tells us positive things. Over 10 years there was a steady, upward incline with a few spikes and dips-normal in any housing market. This means there has been an overall increase in wealth.
Now the important … (1 comments)

Thanks to a few bloggers I have discovered that tomorrow, Sep 19, is national Talk Like a Pirate Day.
What better way to celebrate than to take the family to the Pirate's Dinner Adventure in Buena Park, CA and Orlando, FL.

“This dinner show buts you and your family right in the middle of all the swashbuckling action.” At Pirate’s Dinner Adventure guests enjoy a dining experience including an amazing action-paced display of special effects, wizardry, aerial arts, swordplay, and duels, all in an entertaining and humorous show about good vs. evil. california: Unwarranted Hype with USC vs. OSU today? - 09/12/09 08:42 AM

Every year they try to make some big hype out of the USC vs. Ohio State game...and every year it's just a plain ole whoopin.  Oh, you know who gets the whoopin right?
The Big 12 continues to show that they lack the speed the Pac 10 possesses.  And speed just flat out kills...it wins ball games.
Could it be the terrific weather and outdoor training year round?  Maybe.
Could it be that Pac 10 schools just attract the most talented players to show off their skills?  Maybe.
Whatever it is...we all hope it's a great game that can hold … (0 comments)

california: CA Wildfire Preparedness - 09/03/09 09:04 AM
With fire season well underway in California I am posting some protection and preparedness tips. Please use the following checklist from The Personal Insurance Federation of California to keep your families and communities safe:
Clear all flammable vegetation within 100 feet of your house. Plant larger trees no closer than six feet from the structure. Cut small trees and brush to leave widely spaced, larger trees. Maintain a well-pruned landscape. Trim tree limbs hanging over your house. Clean all needles and leaves from the roof, eaves, and rain gutters. Maintain a well-watered landscape or use drought-resistant plants that won't increase your … (0 comments)

california: Big Action for Little League! - 08/23/09 04:48 PM

If you happened to have any leisure time this Sunday, perhaps you were able to catch a little bit of the Little League World Series today, like I did.
Typically, I enjoy watching the series for a little background noise while working or mulling around the house, but today, I was able to actually sit down and watch a little bit of two games.
The California team had another tremendous victory today, beating Massachusetts 14-0.
Japan, as usual, gave a wonderful performance, scoring runs while taking advantage of sloppy plays by the Curacao team. In the last two innings, however, … (1 comments)

california: Carnivorous Calamari: California Coast Invasion - 07/21/09 07:07 AM
Southern California has become invaded with Giant Squid! These sea creatures are about 5-feet-long, can get to be 100 pounds, with razor sharp beaks and toothed tentacles.

The Humboldt squid have been scaring scuba divers and washing up on California beaches. Native to Mexico's deep waters, they are nicknamed "red devils" for their color and occasional tendency to attack divers. They are usually found in schools of up to 1,200! But don't worry, they prefer deep water so swimmers and surfers need not be wary.
These Jumbo Squid are fished at night, using lights to bring the squid to the surface. … (0 comments)

california: Wine Lovers 101... The best, for less - 07/14/09 09:36 AM
Who doesn't like to unwind over a glass of wine with dinner? Choosing a good wine is difficult, choosing a good, inexpensive wine is even tougher. Raise your glasses because TopTenz.ner has provided a list of the best wine for $10 or less...
Personally, if I were to add to this list it would be "2 buck chuck". Otherwise known as Charles Shaw, sold at Trader Joe's for around $2.99. I might take off the Yellow Tail, there are better wines than that for under $10.

california: Warmer Weather - Time to Jump in the Waves?...Not So Fast! - 05/12/09 08:29 AM

As spring settles in...thoughts turn to body surfing and boogie boarding at the beach. But hold on for just a moment...
Did you know that nearly 10% of all beach injuries reported by our lifeguards rank as serious?  And serious includes spinal injury from diving into waves and hitting the sand.  The sand is unforgiving.  And as currents change from a northwest swell in winter months to southwest swell in summer months, the sandy bottom of beaches change along with it.  This can create an unknown danger when people blindly dive into waves for that burst of refresh on a hot … (1 comments)
