children: Moving with Kids - 03/18/11 08:22 AM

Moving can be a very exciting and fun time while others consider moving a stressful and difficult experience. Have you ever wondered though, how moving can affect your children? It can be a lot harder for younger kids to understand moving and leaving everything they know. With many years of Real Estate experience here are some tips I have found very useful to help your children deal with moving.

Start by making a scrapbook of photographs of the old home, neighborhood, school, church, friends, family and going away parties. Assure them that you won't forget their friends. Have a good-bye … (3 comments)

children: Children Can Go Green Too with Caruso! - 02/08/11 08:37 AM

Encouraging your children to do things can be an exhausting experience. Encouraging your children to go green can be even harder. Some children refuse to eat vegetables while others repeatedly ignore simple requests. But instead of forcing your ideals onto your children, you have to let go and empower them with positivity. Of course, eating fruits and vegetables as well as participating in eco-friendly activities is important for kids to start doing at an early age, so you have to play into their egos - empower them to make these better choices and show them it can be fun. Here are … (2 comments)

children: Happy Birthday Big Bird! - 11/10/09 01:11 PM
Sesame Street, The children's television show home to Cookie Monster, Elmo and Big Bird turned 40 today.
My kids watched this when they are young and it is amazing to know that their kids may be watching it too. Sesame Street is shown in 140 countries and has helped millions of children learn to count and read.
To celebrate, Michelle Obama was featured on the show today.
Happy Birthday Sesame Street! From all of us at the Michael Caruso Real Estate Group!

children: Should your kid be on Facebook? - 11/02/09 02:44 PM
We all use Facebook and many of the blogs on Active Rain are about improving your profile. But status updates, news feeds, and photos aren’t just for teens and adults anymore.

Researchers say a growing number of children using Facebook and MySpace despite requirements to be at least 13. These sites have no way to verify ages so children pretend to be older when signing up. Now there are a growing number of networking sites geared toward young users like Disney’s Club Penguin, WebKinz, KidSwirl and Whyville.

Its scary for many reasons, the exposure to adult content, the lack of … (4 comments)

children: Back to school to prove to daddy I'm not a fool - 08/26/09 07:10 AM
It's back to school time! This means you are either ready to get the kids out of the house, or dreading the return of cooler weather and checking homework. So, how do we adjust our family to the transition?

•A week before school starts make bedtime about 15 minutes earlier until they are back to the school routine.
•Make sure they aren't sleeping in late the last week before school, preparing them for early wake up calls.
•Get little ones excited with an alarm clock featuring their favorite cartoon character. For teens, try a cool iPod alarm clock and player.

children: Back to School, a pain in the neck. - 08/18/09 12:30 PM
It's back to school time! New teachers, new subjects, new friends, new shoes, new pencils, new year!
Before you send your loved one to school, backpack full of supplies and a homemade lunch, read this:
According to health and wellness experts, a normal backpack should not exceed 15 percent of a child's total body weight.
Backpacks that are too heavy can cause back and neck pain to your child. Ouch. Try weighing or lifting your child's backpack before they start school.

children: Are Kids in Danger from Heavy Media Exposure? - 12/04/08 04:57 AM

Parents and policymakers...pay attention here.  Researchers are releasing data that suggests children are being harmed by TV, the Internet and other types of media.
I think researchers have done these studies for years, but recent reviews of the 173 reports compiled over the past 28 years finds that 80% agree that heavy media exposure increases risk of harm, including: obesity, smoking, sex, drug & alcohol use, attention problems and poor grades in school.
93% of studies found that children with greater media exposure have sex earlier.  The study provides overwhelming evidence of the importance of limiting children's use of media … (3 comments)

children: Towering Christmas Trees at Malls Don't Impress...They Hurt! - 10/27/08 08:52 AM
Here it is in "The OC".  November is almost upon us and some (if not all) attention turns to Christmas shopping.  Along those lines, we are home to several of the largest grossing dollar volume Malls in the USA.
But one of them...South Coast Plaza hurts me every year.  No, not with the prices of items.  It is with the delivery of their Christmas Tree.
This year, the South Coast Plaza Mall will hoist and decorate a 96 foot 60 year old white fir from Mount Shasta.  Beautiful?  Absolute YES!  But it's criminal to kill a tree like this, then haul … (2 comments)

children: Donation is Music to Their Ears - 10/12/08 07:14 AM
There is a wonderful place in Santa Ana called the Children's Therapeutic Arts Center.  Here, children with developmental disabilities partake in after-school dance, music and art classes, which are all provided at no cost, thanks to many generous private donations and grants.  The center hopes that such programs will prevent high-risk children from becoming involved in drugs and violence further down the road.
Unfortunately, the only thing the Arts Center lacked was enough instruments for their many students.  This week, that all changed!  Coastal International had several unsold instruments leftover from an exhibition earlier in the year, and after learning about … (0 comments)

children: Time for a Comeback for Large Families - 10/02/08 09:11 AM
Have you noticed the influx and popularity of reality television showcasing large families? I'm not talking about four kids and a few pets. I'm talking 8, 12 even 16 children!
It seems the common thread in these shows is that the family unit is the most important thing. Consistency and multitasking ensures everyone knows their place and that their contribution is vital and appreciated.
You don't see a lot of "Keeping Up With the Jones" type attitude in these families. They are just living their lives and doing the best they can. And they seem to be truly happy.
For many … (5 comments)

children: Commonality in ALL Presidential Candidates...Firstborn = High Acheiver - 06/12/08 03:17 AM
People who study birth order will tell you that firstborns are most likely to be high achievers.
Firstborns are disproportionately represented in such areas and careers as astronauts, are members of the National Academy of Sciences are high standardized test scorers and thrive in other areas that demand high levels of academic success.
Nine out of the 11 candidates this year for President of the USA were firstborn or only-born of their sex in their family.  Now that we are down to the final two:
Barrack is an only child.  He has a half sister who is 9 years older, so … (3 comments)

children: The Next Force in Housing... - 03/18/08 06:16 AM
In an on-line survey held recently of agents across the country 66% saw an increase in home purchases from empty nesters over the last 3 years.  Of those surveyed, 52% say "desire to downsize" is the empty nester key reason for a move.  50% say empty nesters look for single-family homes; 49% are seeking condos or townhouses.
Agents polled believe that 18% of their empty nesters move to be near their children or grandchildren and 54% of those empty nesters view their home as a home, while 3% see it as an investment.
The baby boomer will continue to be a powerful demographic, creating waves … (2 comments)
