history: Caruso's Halloween Week ~ The History Behind Halloween! - 10/27/11 07:54 AM

The origin of Halloween dates back 2000 years ago to the Celtic celebration of the dead. A Celtic festival was held on November 1, the first day of the Celtic New Year, honoring the Samhain, the Lord of the Dead. Celtic ritual believed that the souls of the dead returned on the evening before November 1st. The celebration included burning sacrifices and costumes. These early events began as both a celebration of the harvest and an honoring of dead ancestors.
Halloween spread throughout Europe in the seventh century. It began with "All Hallows Eve", the "Night of the Dead". … (3 comments)

history: 6th time's a charm? - 07/14/09 09:10 AM
5..4..3..2..1... Severe thunderstorms in Florida yesterday delayed the launch of the Endeavour Space Shuttle for the 5th time! The cost for these delays? Well for every day a shuttle mission is called off after being fueled, NASA spends about $1.3 million (according to spokeswoman Candrea Thomas)! They are almost at the record which was set in both 1986 and 1995 when it took the Columbia shuttle 7 times to finally get lift off.

Once this mission actually launches, it will be the largest gathering of people off the earth. There will be a total of 13 people from several different … (0 comments)

history: Orange County Courthouse - 06/26/09 09:06 AM
Have you visited The Old Orange County Courthouse? Why not head into Santa Ana's Historic Downtown District this summer and go take a look at a huge piece of our OC history. The Courthouse resides in the National Register of Historic Places and is a California State Historic Landmark.
The Courthouse was constructed in 1901 by architect C.L. Strange. He chose a Richardsonian Romanesque style, featuring arches and ornamented columns. It is constructed of brick and feature elaborate carvings. Today the 30,000-square foot building has been restored to look much as it had at the turn of the last century.

history: Orange County Homes / Today in history...how time flies. - 06/05/09 09:09 AM

Today in History.
How time flies... It has been 5 years, today, since President Ronald Regan died. We all remember the images of a tearful Mrs. Regan as she hugged her husband's coffin before the ceremonies concluded. President Regan lived a great life as an actor, politician and ultimately the 40th President of the United States.  He has left his legacy that many of us will not soon forget.
"Whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears; to your confidence rather than … (1 comments)

history: Valentine's Day Spirit - 02/14/09 05:52 AM
If you're like me, you've already visited Google's home page over six times today.

As Google has been known to do in the past, they've changed their logo to a cute, celebratory Valentine's Day color of red and included an "xo" in the title.
What some folks do not know (perhaps they've been living under a rock), is that if you click on the logo, links related to the logo's topic (for today, V-Day) will appear.
Some noteworthy links included:
"Five Geeky Marriage Proposals That Worked"
"The definition of Valentine's Day (per Wikipedia)"
"History of Valentine's Day" (History.com)

history: Has the Economy Returned our Churches to Us? - 12/27/08 05:27 AM

Most people will remember when a place of worship was a center point in a community.  The church (regardless of denomination) was a focal point and a base of support and financial assistance for those in need.  A church was a gathering place and a collection center to provide a means for good will toward less fortunate...
Then came the advent of 'Black Friday'  -  fancy lingo for after holiday sales...and sales gimmicks after and before the holidays.  The commercialism crept into our lives and perhaps diminished the true meaning of holiday spirit.
In this tough economy, people may be … (6 comments)
