institute for challenging disorganization: Why hire a Professional Organizer? - 07/18/21 12:46 PM
I belong to numerous behind-the-scenes chat rooms for Organizers. Some are hosted by my professional societies, some are convened for common interests around issues like hoarding, others are hosted by people selling courses they claim are sufficient for getting trained for the profession.

I'm going to quote a thread I'm on at the moment. I'm not going to point to its source, name any of the participants. But I'm posting it as an URGENT example of why you want to find people who belong to the professional society(ies) relevant to your needs, whether those are the National Association of Productivity and Organizing … (1 comments)

institute for challenging disorganization: How to Become a Professional Organizer - 07/22/19 01:53 PM
Seven of my colleagues and I contributed to this blog post. And as much as it is a GREAT launching point for "how-to," it's also a persuasive set of arguments for why someone needs to hire a professional... Lost count of how many times we mention National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals and strongly urge people to join our local chapters, including my NAPO Seattle Area Chapter. Just sayin'

institute for challenging disorganization: Music in my pocket - 07/05/19 11:04 AM
I keep music in my pocket. I don't own an alarm clock. I set a musical alarm on my phone. I wake up to the alarm and instantly turn my phone to a music and humor morning talk radio station. The minute I'm dressed, I tuck the phone in my back pocket. Music in my pocket until I get in the car, and music in the car until I get to wherever I'm going. If I get tired of the radio, I switch to CDs. For me, the music and humor show does a great deal to set me up for … (5 comments)

institute for challenging disorganization: The best kind of specialization - 03/18/19 04:02 PM
I'm not a specialist. My youngest client, one-on-one, has been five-years-old. My oldest in her 80s. I work in arts & crafts rooms, home-based business offices, storage units, garages, and anywhere else you dare to name - I'm the one on the Board of my chapter of my professional society who comes to the meetings while brushing the spiders out of her hair. I've had couples, singles, widows. I've worked with 1/2 dozen dogs rolling at my heels, an even larger number of cats wondering if they could snuggle in my bags, and while orchestrating six young people as assistants.

I'm NOT … (4 comments)

institute for challenging disorganization: Lazy - 05/12/18 11:03 AM
I've decided "lazy" is one of the most vindictive words in the world. Whether it's Marie Kondo calling her clients "lazy" I-lost-count-of-how-many-times in "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up," which to this day I desperately hope is a translation problem and a reflection of deep cultural differences between American Organizers and Ms. Kondo, or Newsweek's 8/11/2017 cover of President Trump, it's a vicious attack. I mourn when my clients label themselves without even the slightest hesitation. A repeat of that offense spurred this blog.

So, from Merriam-Webster:
a:  disinclined to activity or exertion:  not energetic or vigorous     The lazy child tried to avoid … (3 comments)

institute for challenging disorganization: Are You a Member of the Phone Calls Club? - 04/12/18 07:43 AM
Do you call your Mom when you wash the dishes? Catch up with your best friend every time you fold the laundry? You hunt down your first high school boyfriend’s little brother, 30 years later, just to have someone to talk to because you have to do the clearing up before the housekeeper comes – those blippity-blip LEGOS!!!! “Better” yet, have your friends and family come to expect you to bribe them with pizza to come over and keep you company whenever you need to do paperwork? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. And you might need a body double.

institute for challenging disorganization: When is Too Much? - 11/28/17 08:48 PM
I see a lot of Legos. And collections: Hummels, purses, plates, hats, Star Wars toys, shoes, holiday decorations, jewelry, books, makeup, cookware ... and collectible Legos. By my standards, I have a massive, intrusive amount of Legos in my house: my son treasures sets, and scratchbuilds with loose pieces. I suspect I could build a house with them in a pinch.

So when is too much? I couldn't answer in a thousand years. Each of us has an entirely subjective idea of abundance, and excess. And I may have a different idea of abundance for my books as for my photos as … (4 comments)

institute for challenging disorganization: Mentoring, the Universe, and Stupid Little Stuff - 06/16/17 07:54 AM
I believe in mentoring, even if it's only something as simple as giving someone a list of resources to help them explore launching a business. I spent two inspiring hours talking to a young woman who's curious about opportunities as a Professional Organizer. She came armed with a list of questions - excellent start! And she offered extremely thoughtful observations about the details, gory and glorious, that I was passing along. Conversation with her reinforced for me all the more the fact that I love this work. And I forget how complex this field is until I catch myself inducing deer-in-the-headlights … (11 comments)
