home safety: Balcony barrier railings can’t just look OK---they have to be OK too. - 01/28/12 08:59 AM
 
The focus of this blog post is the upper level balcony visible in the following photo.
 
Standing on the balcony, it is about 16 feet to the carport floor below.  Surely a fall from this level, onto the hard concrete below, could prove deadly or result in injuries perhaps worse than death.
The problem is the barrier railing. 

The issue with the railing is not readily apparent, and from the ground it certainly looks fine.  From the deck itself however, we can see that the barrier railing is spliced right in the middle---and merely toe-nailed together.

home safety: Functional Creativity----oxymoron of the day. - 11/05/08 06:52 PM
       I have no problem with "inventiveness."  My ancestors invaded Connecticut in 1632, so Yankee ingenuity, for better or worse, is in my blood.
     However, I have learned----for the most part----to channel that inventiveness "within" the confines of the building codes.  There really is no place for pure "creativity" when it comes to construction----that is better left to Art.  
     I can already feel the hair on the back of my neck rising up as someone is about to pounce on me for defining creativity so narrowly, and----it is my blog so I can define it any way I want---call … (37 comments)

home safety: Kitchen Range Safety - 01/21/08 10:11 AM
     The manufacturer's installation instructions for slide-in ranges usually require the installation of an "anti-tip" bracket.  It is surprising to me how often these don't get installed.  I often find them still in the packaging in the drawer under the range or elsewhere in the kitchen.  When properly installed they prevent the range from tipping over should a heavy weight be placed on the open oven door (Like that 30 lb Thanksgiving turkey or the kid using the door as a step ladder to the cookie jar above the range).  Obviously this can be a danger if hot things cooking on … (6 comments)
