rodents: After all, you light up my life! - 02/05/12 11:16 AM
I know you don’t think I am minding my own business when I chew on things.
But I really am.
I really don’t understand how you can criticize me when you let the dog chew on everything in sight.  Sure, you might scold him, but in the end you will pet him on the head and scratch him under his chin. I just don't get it.
Nobody even wants to pet me on the head.  I know some of my hybridized cousins have “crossed over,” but that is another whole story.
And don’t get me started about the cat.

rodents: The original greasers left their mark! - 08/27/11 09:12 AM
People love to beautify their yards with trees and other plants. For some it is like some sort of "homeowner right" to plant whatever they want, wherever they want, without giving any consideration as to how big that plant or tree will get and how it might affect them or their neighbors. Some species of bamboo, if left to their own devices, can be a nightmare for a neighbor that doesn't love bamboo as much as you do.  There are lots of trees with different growth profiles that make more sense to plant in some locations as opposed to others.  For example planting … (16 comments)

rodents: Pay attention to the details---or pay later. - 08/11/11 08:07 PM
If you want a very dark, Bukowskiesque and cynical look at modern day life, and perhaps reflect on ones own drinking habits, I highly recommend the movie Barfly.  But be warned, this movie is not for the squeamish or easily offended.  Even some of you that are NOT easily offended might find parts of this movie a little over the top.  It is nonetheless very funny, sad, and poignant.  One of the great lessons to be learned from the movie, and there are many, is when Henry (Mickey Rourke) talks about how one of the things he can't stand is "obviousness."The … (19 comments)

rodents: The benefits of acting and thinking like a mouse. - 03/09/11 02:06 PM
The first thing I saw when I entered the attic was dozens of little ¾” holes peppering the yellow fiberglass insulation.  There were urine stained, and feces studded, trails from many of the holes.
I was in mouse heaven.
It is nasty enough crawling around in attics, so when they are vermin infested it makes the job even more interesting.  It makes me glad to have a good mask and a good ability of holding my breath.
An inspector has to be a bit like a rat or a mouse when it comes to crawl spaces and attics.

rodents: The “Four Seasons?” Cheap at twice the price! - 07/06/10 09:22 AM
It is a little known fact that every crawl space has a “rodent rating” (pronounced RAT-ing).  It might have a simple, “no-tell-motel” rating of only 1 or it might be a classy “Four Seasons" rating of 5 's.
1  crawl spaces simply: have "access" (unfortunately usually big enough for the beast with claws and fangs----but still better than the stone wall down the street).
2  crawl spaces have the same sort of access but are insulated.  This provides a modicum of protection from the beast with claws and fangs----but is far from perfect.
3  crawl spaces have the same sort … (31 comments)

rodents: Why they pay us the big bucks! - 09/01/09 12:33 PM
Take a look at the following picture.

Can you see why as soon as I saw this crawl space vent I knew I was in for ONE HECK OF A NASTY ADVENTURE in the crawl space?  Well take a little closer look.

The “high-lighted” areas are rodent body-grease marks from YEARS of coming and going through this hole in the vent screen made by the installer of the gas pipe.  The gas pipe was installed when the furnace was converted to gas 18 years ago, so the damage found in this crawl space … (42 comments)
