roof ventilation: Why is my roof sheathing black? - 02/24/12 06:09 AM
When moisture condenses on plywood roof sheathing repeatedly or continuously the wood will turn black. This can be caused by the action of fungal growth and molds and the affect they have on the tannins in the wood.
The following picture is of a long standing moisture condition in an attic where much of the roof sheathing has turned black. There were some areas with obvious mold or mold-like fungal growth present but many areas just appeared to be stained.

I have posted in the past about attic ventilation and how there are many ways to achieve good attic ventilation. Ventilation can consist of passive means that utilize soffit vents, roof vents, gable vents and ridge vents. Sometimes mechanical means are utilized with the installation of wind driven turbine type vents, and sometimes electrically or solar powered vents are installed. I know I have blogged about this in the past, but this is the first time I have seen this particular defect in "New Construction." It usually occurs in homes that have been re-roofed. I am talking about compromised attic venting due to "opposing" systems being installed.
Older homes typically had gable vents if that was the type of roof that was installed. As we came to understand how venting works, and came to understand the problems associated with inadequately vented attics and roof structures, we moved away from the use of gable vents.
