No Insurance driving Suspensions

Believe it or not, you can get fined for not having insurance when you're driving.  There has been   of talk in the news how auto insurance differs from health insurance.  I'm not here to fight that battle.  I hope the battle in health insurance really shakes out but for now auto insurance in Texas states if you drive without at least the minimum state standards you can get ticketed and a fined.

The second or subsequent ticket for no liability insurance may lead to a suspended drivers license.  To reinstate your driver's license, you will be required to obtain proof of insurance (form SR22) from your insurance company and submit Form SR22 to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).  You must maintain a current SR22 for two years from the date of conviction.

When the State of Texas determines you must maintain proof of insurance with the DPS, your insurance company must inform the DPS if you cancel your insurance or lapse on your payments.  If you do not have a current SR22 during the time in which the State of Texas requires you to carry it, they can suspend your license again, regardless of the cause for the original suspension.  If convicted of canceling your SR22 insurance, you must maintain proof of insurance Form SR22 for two years.

The bottom line is that if the State of Texas demands you to carry Form SR22 insurance, it is in your best interest to make your payments on time and to keep the SR22 for the duration of the time required.

I can't relate to how the health care debate works and there is still going to be lots of talk, turmoil and changes over the next couple of years before it is implemented.  There is one thing that I can tell you as a insurance agent in Texas.  Don't leave home without your SR22 if your required to have it.  For more information about the state requirements and how my agency can get you a Form SR22 to complete your state filings.  Please call the Richey Insurance Agency @ 281-359-4616.
