Earlier this week, I went to the Oregon Homeownership Forum in Bend, which was sponsored by the Oregon Housing and Community Services, Oregon Association of Realtors and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. Great idea: gather together lenders, real estate agents, builders and housing-related nonprofit groups, and discuss affordable housing financing programs available to Oregonians.
I was surprised, however, that only 50 of us attended (including only about a dozen Realtors). Considering the state of things -- a dramatically shifting real estate market, a dramatically changing mortgage industry -- the topic couldn't have been more timely, especially here. Bend, Oregon: No. 87...and Counting? - 04/09/08 04:53 PM

It seems hardly a month goes by that Central Oregon doesn't make it onto somebody's list of desirable places to live. This time it's Bend that's been named among Fortune Small Business magazine's Top 100 Places to Live and Launch a Business.
Folks here who have become accustomed to finding the area somewhere at the top of the list might be surprised to find that Bend came in at No. 87 (just below Huntsville, Ala., and just above Brunswick, Maine).
