Creative Stimulus Plan: What's on Your Must-Read List? - 03/31/09 01:08 PM
A few days ago, I was listening to Dave Ramsey's financial radio show while driving to an appointment. Something he said during the show has really stuck with me. Dave mentioned that whenever he reads a book of non-fiction, he's a lot more prone to producing creative ideas -- and ideas that aren't necessarily related to that book. He then cited several books he recommended to stimulate the brain, including Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, M.D.; QBQ (The Question Behind the Question) by John G. Miller; and The Richest Man in Babylon by George S Clason. Although I had

Short Sale: Name Your Price? - 03/24/09 04:57 PM
I just got back from our bi-weekly broker's tour of new listings in Sisters, and I was floored to hear the pitches of not one but two different agents whose properties we were touring. They stood, when describing their new listings (both of which are short sales), mentioned the sales price but then quickly added, "But, of course, as you know, the price doesn't really matter." Excuse me? The price doesn't matter?!! Were they joking? When is price not an issue in the sale of a home? Unfortunately, they were serious. And seriously misinformed -- or perhaps just uninformed. Most people

February 2009 Real Estate Market Snapshot for Tumalo, Oregon - 03/15/09 05:44 PM
Last summer, I started tracking the Sisters real estate market. This year, I've expanded to also track the Tumalo Residential with Acreage market. Granted, tracking Tumalo is an admittedly subjective undertaking since, at least officially, it doesn't exist (it's an unincorporated community). Because its boundaries are up to interpretation, please consider the following statistics a general barometer of the area's real estate activity that includes most, but not necessarily all, of the listings in Tumalo. Noteworthy for Tumalo this month: Once again, although more than one-third of Tumalo Active listings are over $1,000,000, there were no sales (contingent, pending or closed)

February 2009 Real Estate Market Snapshot for Sisters, Oregon - 03/14/09 07:16 PM
In February, it appeared that Sisters sellers were already anticipating the spring market surge; there was an increase in inventory in both Single Family Residences and Homes with Acreage (homes on one acre or more). Unfortunately, there wasn't a comparable increase in sales -- in fact, there was a slight decrease in sales, from a total of four pending sales and seven completed sales in January to one contingent sale, two pending sales and three completed sales in February. On the plus side: Average Days on Market for both categories of Active Listings were slightly down from January's numbers. Below

The Debate Over Destination Resorts in the Metolius Basin Intensifies - 03/02/09 07:29 PM
I'm guessing that when the folks who proposed building two destination resorts in Jefferson County's Metolius River Basin initially developed their master plans, they had no idea of the intensity with which the plans would be debated. But, in fact, the discussion about destination resorts and their place (or lack thereof) in Jefferson County just seems to be getting more complicated. It all started in January 2007, when the Jefferson County Commission signed off a new comprehensive plan that included two proposed destination resorts (a first for Jefferson County): The Metolian, a 627-acre project northeast of Suttle Lake by Dutch Pacific

New Post Office Opens in Sisters, Oregon - 03/02/09 06:13 PM
After two years of planning (and, at times, spirited debate), the new post office opened in Sisters this morning. It's been a long time coming: The move was first announced in 2007, after the USPS determined that the existing site on Fir Street couldn't meet the future needs of the community. The Postal Service broke ground on the site last summer. Many residents were initially put off with the idea of moving the post office from the south side of town (the hub of downtown activity) to the north side (the town's industrial hinterland). But after an unsuccessful pitch from
