central oregon: Do You Rely on the Zillow Zestimate? Should you? - 01/10/11 02:32 PM
Recently, a number of major media outlets (including the Los Angeles Times and the Christian Science Monitor) jumped on the "news" that -- according to Zillow -- the White House has lost nearly one-quarter of its value during the past three years. According to Zillow, it's now worth $251,617,000.
Nobody bothered to question how Zillow came up with that number. Frankly, nobody cares how Zillow came up with that number. The info made for a very slick sound bite and, not surprisingly, lots of media types bit. In today's hyper-speed, media-soaked society, we're all about the bottom line -- please, spare me the … (4 comments)

central oregon: Central Oregon's High Desert in Bloom - 07/23/09 12:54 PM
Many days, I sleepwalk my way through the early-morning stroll I take through my rural Tumalo neighborhood with my two dogs and two cats (that's right, I walk the cats--they love it, in fact, and follow me as faithfully as my pooches).
Earlier this week, I couldn't help but notice my surroundings. Usually, much of the deserty natural terrain near my home is one of varying shades of brown (especially during a heat wave!). Yet this day, just about every plant in sight was in bloom, and even the most mundane sprout had been transformed into something extraordinary.
After capturing a particularly … (1 comments)

central oregon: “Hungry All Year Long” Program Benefits Many Local Communities - 06/16/09 01:42 PM
Many people familiar with NeighborImpact know only about the housing-related programs it sponsors (see my previous blog about its workshops for homeowners facing foreclosure). But NeighborImpact also provides food to 35 local food pantries throughout Central Oregon.
Three years ago, Laura George launched a small food drive in Central Oregon designed to help stock the shelves of the NeighborImpact pantries at a time -- in early summer -- when donations are slim. Back then, her goal was to gather 7,000 pounds of food (more than double what NeighborImpact typically received in the summer months, compared to 40,000 pounds during the Christmas … (2 comments)

central oregon: NeighborImpact Addresses Foreclosure En Masse - 04/07/09 10:08 PM
Last Saturday, I attended a free two-hour workshop for struggling homeowners in search of information on the ins and outs of foreclosure. It was the first such workshop hosted by NeighborImpact, the Redmond-based nonprofit group that provides a number of home-related community services to residents of Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties.
Up until now, NeighborImpact's Housing Center has primarily provided one-on-one mortgage counseling via two HUD-certified foreclosure counselors: Kenny La Point, who works with residents of Bend, Sunriver and La Pine; and Selef Spragg, who works with residents of Redmond, Sisters, Prineville and Madras. But as I learned from their manager, … (3 comments)

central oregon: What's Selling in Central Oregon? - 01/26/09 02:24 PM
These days, with winter in full swing (we've just received our second round of sub-20-degree weather with accompanying snow), I'm often asked "Is anything selling?" Up until today, my response has been strictly anecdotal: I've had several closings in the past couple of months, as have many of the agents in my office and most of the agents I know outside the office. So, yes, things are selling.
However, after scanning the hot sheet off and on for the past week and noticing how many of the pending and completed sales are now foreclosures and short sales, I decided it was … (2 comments)

central oregon: Bella Tazza Time in Tumalo - 07/16/08 06:24 PM
Yesterday morning I finally checked out the new Bella Tazza, which opened in Tumalo a few weeks ago.  If I had been on top of my game, I would've been there the day it opened; landing a Bella Tazza in our neck of the woods is big news.
The locally owned coffee café has been a popular downtown Bend hotspot for several years. Tumalo (located about five miles northwest of Bend), on the other hand, is a sleepy little unincorporated community of several hundred folks, most of whom live on mini-ranches or working ranches outside the blink-and-you-missed-it town center -- and some of … (1 comments)

central oregon: The Skinny on Cheatgrass (Hint: this persnickety plant is bad news) - 07/11/08 12:28 PM
If you live in Central Oregon -- especially if you own a home on acreage -- you're probably familiar with cheatgrass (aka cheat, chess, downy brome, downy chess, Junegrass, bronco grass, 100-days grass and Mormon oats). It's one of the most common grasses around. (According to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, "Of the 3 to 4 million acres of shrub-steppe that remain in the Columbia Basin eco-region in Washington and Oregon, cheatgrass either dominates or is the common grass in from 2.25 to 3 million acres.")
But you may not realize what a threat this little bugger can be to your … (4 comments)

central oregon: Rain, Rain...Scram! - 05/29/08 07:38 PM
All you visitors who've been in Central Oregon for the past seven or eight days and have seen nothing but gray clouds and rain: don't fret. This is not typical. This is, in fact, quite unusual. We really do only get 12 or so inches of rain per year. I promise.

The reason I'm bringing this up today is that I basically need reminding myself.
I'm rained out.
I moved to the east side of the Cascade Mountains because it was the dry side. So what gives? I know I should be grateful -- water is always a welcome sight … (4 comments)

central oregon: Bend, Oregon: No. 87...and Counting? - 04/09/08 04:53 PM

It seems hardly a month goes by that Central Oregon doesn't make it onto somebody's list of desirable places to live. This time it's Bend that's been named among Fortune Small Business magazine's Top 100 Places to Live and Launch a Business.
Folks here who have become accustomed to finding the area somewhere at the top of the list might be surprised to find that Bend came in at No. 87 (just below Huntsville, Ala., and just above Brunswick, Maine).
What Bend has in its favor, according to the article: It's "sunny and peaceful" with a "pro-business tax environment....The state aids … (0 comments)

central oregon: Aloha (Brrrrrrr!): Trader Joe's Snowy Opening in Bend, Oregon - 03/31/08 06:45 PM

After more than two years' wait, Trader Joe's finally opened in Bend on Friday. Seems like half the county showed up at the store's new Cascade Village Shopping Center location, even though the weather decided not to co-operate -- Mother Nature having scheduled a spring snow to arrive just as Joe's doors were opening for the first time. Gives new meaning to the term "spring break."
As it turned out, that unexpected blast of winter might have actually boosted sales. Stepping foot inside the jolly tropical themed Joe's -- with its tiki-hut décor, festive island background music and Hawaiian-shirt-clad workers -- … (10 comments)
