central oregon photos: Central Oregon's High Desert in Bloom - 07/23/09 12:54 PM
Many days, I sleepwalk my way through the early-morning stroll I take through my rural Tumalo neighborhood with my two dogs and two cats (that's right, I walk the cats--they love it, in fact, and follow me as faithfully as my pooches). Earlier this week, I couldn't help but notice my surroundings. Usually, much of the deserty natural terrain near my home is one of varying shades of brown (especially during a heat wave!). Yet this day, just about every plant in sight was in bloom, and even the most mundane sprout had been transformed into something extraordinary. After capturing a particularly

central oregon photos: Images from "Glory Daze" Car Show in Sisters, Oregon - 07/21/09 08:27 PM
Last Saturday, while returning a library book in Sisters, I stumbled upon an event I hadn't even realized was in town. Just around the corner from the library, folks had gathered for the first annual "Glory Daze Car Show," which meandered along Main Street (plus several side streets). Automotive aficionados are frequent visitors to Sisters because of the many scenic roadways nearby. So I wasn't too surpised to see that the show had gathered an impressive crowd of car buffs, both young and old alike, by the time I arrived mid-afternoon. There was something of interest for just about everyone, from classic

central oregon photos: A Frosty Return to Winter for Central Oregon - 01/18/09 08:16 PM
So it seems our weeklong spring-like sojourn (sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-50s) is over, at least for now. Yesterday, we awoke to a foggy, frosty winter wonderland, with temperatures that started in the low 20s and never rose much above that. Today, the fog was even thicker, the frost shards even stouter. The forecast; more of the same through Tuesday. Surrounded by the surreal landscape, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to capture the scene with my handy Casio. Hope you enjoy the view... central oregon photos: Saturday Snapshot: Trailriding in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness - 07/08/08 06:44 PM
For the July 4th holiday, we headed to John Day, where a group of us gather each year for a weekend-long celebration at our friends' Herb and Diane's place. On Saturday, Diane treated us to a trail ride in the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, a 68,700-acre range with elevations between 4,000 and 9,038 feet, located in the Malheur National Forest. We parked at the Strawberry Campground, about 12 miles outside Prairie City, a charming little town of 1,100. (Known as "the Gateway to the Strawberry Wilderness," it's worth a day trip in and of itself.) The campgrounds were packed with hikers and

central oregon photos: Saturday Snapshot - 06/29/08 10:21 PM
Yesterday we went trailriding in Central Oregon along the Metolius River past Camp Sherman (10 miles west of Sisters). The last time we rode out here, in the fall, when the turning leaves added a spectacular backdrop, we had the place to ourselves. Should've known it would have been more crowded now that the summer camp crowd has arrived. Not to fret. Out here, riding the deeply wooded trail that runs along the river, it was easy to focus instead on the gorgeous scenery -- the mighty river itself, the many wildflowers in bloom, the various butterflies in residence. We weren't prepared for the heat,
