sisters events: Images from "Glory Daze" Car Show in Sisters, Oregon - 07/21/09 08:27 PM
Last Saturday, while returning a library book in Sisters, I stumbled upon an event I hadn't even realized was in town. Just around the corner from the library, folks had gathered for the first annual "Glory Daze Car Show," which meandered along Main Street (plus several side streets). Automotive aficionados are frequent visitors to Sisters because of the many scenic roadways nearby. So I wasn't too surpised to see that the show had gathered an impressive crowd of car buffs, both young and old alike, by the time I arrived mid-afternoon. There was something of interest for just about everyone, from classic

sisters events: A Memorable New Symbol for Sisters, Oregon - 06/13/09 02:55 PM
Earlier this week -- just in time for the hallowed Sisters Rodeo weekend -- a towering new symbol for our fair city rode into town. He's known as "The Wild Stallion," and he's the creation of renowned local artist Lorenzo Ghiglieri. Located in the center of town across the street from Lorenzo Fine Art, Ghiglieri's gallery on Highway 20 (aka Cascade Avenue), the Stallion is one of the first images that visitors encounter now as they travel through Sisters from the south. Talk About Memorable First Impressions...A spectacular 13-foot-plus bronze specimen of equine wonder, the Stallion has literally been stopping traffic

sisters events: Sisters Celebrates its History with Inaugural Ranch Event - 05/29/09 01:44 PM
The festival season in Sisters --always packed with entertaining cultural events -- launches this weekend with a new event that sounds like a real hoot: the first annual Ranch Life & Rodeo show. Designed to honor the town's rich Western heritage, the event is packed with out-of-the-ordinary activities. Perhaps most notably, in celebration of Oregon's 150th birthday, the Deschutes Historical Society is re-enacting an old-fashioned stagecoach ride between Bend and Sisters (the stage leaves from Sisters today and will return from Bend on Saturday (it's expected to arrive around 4 p.m.) On a similar note, Jenny and Jerry Andres, owners of

sisters events: “Slick” New Dining Spot in Sisters - 05/22/09 03:10 PM
Much has been made recently about the struggles of the downtown Sisters business community. Last year, the town was classified a "severely distressed community" by the Oregon Economic & Community Development Department, which arrived at the designation after analyzing data in four areas: percentage of the population with a bachelor's degree age 25 or higher; unemployment rate (any community above 8 percent is considered "distressed); percentage of the population below poverty; and per-capita income. Sisters qualified for the moniker in all four areas, making it "severely" distressed, as opposed to simply "distressed." This year, the rest of Deschutes County joined Sisters

sisters events: New Post Office Opens in Sisters, Oregon - 03/02/09 06:13 PM
After two years of planning (and, at times, spirited debate), the new post office opened in Sisters this morning. It's been a long time coming: The move was first announced in 2007, after the USPS determined that the existing site on Fir Street couldn't meet the future needs of the community. The Postal Service broke ground on the site last summer. Many residents were initially put off with the idea of moving the post office from the south side of town (the hub of downtown activity) to the north side (the town's industrial hinterland). But after an unsuccessful pitch from

sisters events: Benefit Concert Scheduled for Local Realtor/Musician and Husband - 02/16/09 07:47 PM
Folks who'd like to combine a good time with a good cause are encouraged to attend a benefit concert for Sisters residents Doug and Katie Cavanaugh on Feb 27 at Three Creeks Brewery. Last month, a devastating fire in the early hours of Jan. 22 destroyed the workshop that housed Doug's business, Cavanaugh Logging, along the couple's music venue, Harmony House (Katie, a former Realtor with Coldwell-Banker Reed Bros., in Sisters, is also a well-known folk singer-songwriter, who performs often with Doug). The fire, which was started by an electrical short-circuit, not only leveled the workshop but destroyed several vehicles, Doug's tools

sisters events: Soup's On in Sisters, Oregon - 11/21/08 02:18 PM
It's Soup Night at Sisters Coffee! On the third Friday of each winter month, Sisters Coffee Co., hosts an evening of free food and fellowship for the Sisters community. The idea was the brainchild of my fellow RE/MAX Town & Country agent, Carol Doyel, as her way of giving back to the community. So everyone in town is invited to meet at Sisters Coffee Co. -- which graciously offered to host the recurring event -- bring a loaf of bread, and share in a homemade bowl of soup (usually, there are three or four options) -- for free. The festivities begin

sisters events: New Expanded Ray’s Food Place Opens in Sisters, Oregon - 11/12/08 01:42 PM
This morning at 7 a.m., under unusually threatening skies, the new Ray's Food Place opened in Sisters (just a block from the old Ray's). And what a scene it was! When I arrived at 9 a.m., the place was packed with folks checking out the new digs. As required by city code, the store boasts an 1880s frontier-type façade; however, Sisters has never before seen a Western scene quite on this grand a scale: 43,500 square feet, to be exact. That's almost twice the size of the former Ray's. In truth, the center's block-long sprawl is a bit daunting, although the store's

sisters events: New Kid on the Block: Sisters Oregon Hosts Regional Rodeo Finals - 09/18/08 02:56 PM
Most folks who are familiar with Sisters have at least heard of, if not attended, the famous Sisters Rodeo, which takes place each summer during the second weekend of June. Well, now a new fall rodeo tradition seems to be in the works. Hot on the heels of last weekend's venerable Pendleton Round-up in Eastern Oregon comes the new kid on the block: the Northwest Pro Rodeo Finals, which debuts its second season in Sisters this weekend (and for which my office, RE/MAX Town & Country Realty, serves as a main sponsor). Also located at the Sisters Rodeo Grounds, the event

sisters events: New Blues Fest for Sisters & Central Oregon - 06/27/08 04:43 PM
Folks trying to decide which of the many Central Oregon Fourth of July events to attend have a new contender to consider: the Central Oregon Blues & Crawfish Festival, which takes place at Creekside Park in Sisters next Thursday through Saturday. Sisters residents Tom & Cheryl White are the founders of the festival, which was an idea two years in the making, Tom says. By teaming up with veteran concert booker Ryan Funderburg, they've assembled an impressive lineup and a broad spectrum of talent, including John Lee Hooker, Jr., along with Kenny Neal, the Ty Curtis Band, Stephanie Slade, Joe Leonardi, Jon

sisters events: RE/MAX Teams With Pahlisch for our Summer Soiree - 06/20/08 02:10 PM
Last night, our RE/MAX office hosted its annual summer Mix N Mingle soiree for the Sisters Chamber of Commerce (which holds a Mix N Mingle at a local business each month). Usually, we host our party at our downtown office, but decided to show off the new Pahlisch Homes subdivision, called Saddlestone, which we're representing. It's Pahlisch's first venture in Sisters, and it's a first-rate project. So this year, it was a REMAX/Pahlisch production. The site for the event was Saddlestone's outdoor pavilion, which also includes an expansive lawn and elaborate playground area. Along with the barbecue festivities, three of the
