milwaukee home inspection: They sell them so they must be ok, Right? - 03/20/09 02:31 PM
They Sell Them So They Must Be OK, Right? Presented by D.J.Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. I am constantly seeing items installed in homes that should never have been manufactured or sent to market. Or once realized that they cause more damage/defects than good they should of been removed from the market. But unfortunately the manufacturers are allowed to keep making these products and informed builders and trades continue to install them because it makes their lives easier. And uniformed DIYer's blindly install them thinking "they sell them so they must be ok, Right?" Short answer is NO, just because a

milwaukee home inspection: Fingerjig - 06/05/07 07:20 PM
Fingerjig D.J. Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. In this day an age of computers it's become a necessity to know how to type. And with websites, blogs and home inspection reports it can really help out if you're more than a 2-fingered typist. I learned how to type years ago in high school on a manual typewriter when it actually took a bit of effort to even push down a key. Thinking back now the modern keyboard has sure come a long way in it's ease of use. There's a fun site called Fingerjig where you can test your typing speed and accuracy. I found it really interesting

milwaukee home inspection: Anybody out there like Brats? - 05/14/07 07:18 PM
Anybody out there like Brats? Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. Here in Wisconsin we have a ton of different types of brats and every butcher makes their own version. But for store bought brats a couple of national brands that are decent are Klements (which supply the dogs and brats for the Milwaukee Brewers stadium) and Usingers . I think they both also ship. A town north of here called Sheboygan is the brat capital and have their own version as well. They make Johnsonvilles here in Milwaukee and I buy them occaisionally, but here they're sold raw, not pre-cooked and come in a

Easy Apple Sauce D.J. Skedling Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. My Grandma used to spend all day making and canning applesauce so we could enjoy her efforts throughout the year. It seems that's one of those southern traditions that's kind of fallen by the wayside as our lives get more filled and hectic. So if you're like me and enjoy homemade apple sauce instead of the store bought variety! Well here's an easy recipe a friend of mine donated that'll give you that down home flavor using a city-slickers technique. Enjoy!Applesauce This makes an intense applesauce with skins-n-all. Some things are amazing in the microwave.----slice about a doz. MacIntosh

milwaukee home inspection: The Value of a Quality Home Inspection - 04/24/07 05:37 PM
The Value of a Quality Home Inspection By D.J Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. The following is a picture of the inside of a main electrical panel in a home I recently performed a home inspection for that's located in Waukesha County Wisconsin. The seller had this home inspected when she purchased it 3 years ago and is now being relocated out of state. Since she received a clean bill of health on this panel when she had it inspected you can just imagine her dismay when I wrote this electrical panel up as being a serious safety and fire hazard. This is a 100 amp main panel that

Carrier Furnace Lawsuit By D.J. Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. There is a class action lawsuit against the Carrier Corporation who makes both Carrier and Bryant Condensing furnaces. I thought it may be of interest so you can notify your clients of a potential problem they could incounter with their furnace. The link this paper came from is now defunk so I'll post it here for your reading pleasure. This item is important even if you're not performing a Wisconsin home inspection. I recently ran across one of these furnaces while performing a home inspection in Milwaukee and I make sure I hand my clients a copy

milwaukee home inspection: What's wrong with that? - 03/31/07 12:46 PM
What's wrong with that? By D.J. Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. "It's been there for years and I haven't had any problem with it". How many times have you heard this statement from a homeowner? There are lots of defects that in your average home that are unsafe and should never of been installed in the first place. Doorbell transformers and low voltage wiring is never allowed to be installed inside an electrical panel. This panel happens to be built into a stud wall and the electrician who installed the panel wasn't able to install it on the outside. This home is 30 years old and

milwaukee home inspection: What's a GFCI anyways? - 03/30/07 06:25 PM
What's a GFCI anyways? By D.J. Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. During a home inspection there's one particular item that seems I always end up recommending for installation, that being a GFCI. Now some may ask what the heck is that? I usually tell my clients that it's a safety device that may save your life under certain conditions. You know, those square type receptacles that have the Trip and Reset button in the middle. Oh Yeah, I've seen those before is the usual reply. GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter and in a home they come in two varieties, as a receptacle or

milwaukee home inspection: Water Quality - 03/28/07 12:55 PM
Water Quality Presented By DJ Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. Drinking Water The United States has one of the safest water supplies in the world. However, national statistics don't tell you specifically about the quality and safety of the water coming out of your tap. That's because drinking water quality varies from place to place, depending on the condition of the source water from which it is drawn and the treatment it receives. Now you have a new way to find information about your drinking water, if it comes from a public water supplier (EPA doesn't regulate private wells, but recommends that well

Log Homes Presented By DJ Skelding Safeguard Inspection Services, Inc. Log homes may be site-built or pre-cut in a factory for delivery to the site. Some log home manufacturers can also customize their designs. Before designing or purchasing a manufactured log home, you need to consider the following for energy efficiency: The R-Value of Wood In a log home, the wood helps provide some insulation.
