Reno's first-time home buyers will need to act fast and take action in the next few weeks to qualify for the Federal First-Time Home Buyers Tax Credit.  The federal tax credit is part of the stimulus package passed earlier this year and it has been a great success nationwide.  Thousands of first-time home buyers have taken advantage of the $8,000 one time tax credit.  But, if you are going to be among these smart home buyers, you will need to act fast as the tax credit is soon to expire.
Escrow must close on or before November 30.

reno: Washoe County Gives First Time Buyers Down Payment Assistance - 08/10/09 05:12 PM
The Washoe County HOME Consortium (WCHC) has announced two new down payment assistance programs for first-time home buyers.  One of the biggest challenges to would-be homeowners is saving up the money needed for a down payment.  However, if you are saving money to purchase a home in the future, you may be able to take advantage of one of these programs now.
Both the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) and the HOME Program will grant qualifying first-time homebuyers a loan up to $20,000 to be used to as a down payment.  There are many similarities in the programs and some major differences.

reno: Buy Now in Reno - Interest Rates Are Rising - 06/15/09 12:49 PM
Buy now or pay later is where the real estate market is heading now.  This is especially true in light of the rapid rise of interest rates in the past few weeks.  According to a RealtyTimes.com report, sales in the Western Region show that prices are flat.  David McCarthy, CEO of Research Services, says that, when a market goes flat, the bottom of the market has been reached.  When the bottom of the market is reached, prices will then begin their upward climb.    * Interest rates are up and this has a much more dramatic affect on home buyers than the … (0 comments)

reno: Good News! Reno Real Estate is in Recovery! - 06/02/09 03:21 PM
Good news everyone!  It appears that the Reno real estate market is in recovery.  Real estate has seen bad markets before, as has the Greater Reno-Tahoe area.  The real estate market was not a bottomless pit at that time and it is not a bottomless pit now.  As a matter of fact, things are looking better with each passing month. In my March blog post Reno Near the Bottom of the Market, I made the statement that "there are indications locally and nationally that the housing market is on the mend and the bottom of the market is in sight".  I also stated … (0 comments)

reno: Reno's Earth Day - 04/20/09 04:39 PM

Yesterday, there were several workshops at Reno's Earth Day event in Idyllwild Park demonstrating each individual's green power.  Green power is also an issue that the state of Nevada is taking seriously.  The state of Nevada currently holds the most aggressive energy plan for renewable energy in the nation.  Only 26 other states and Washington DC have a renewable portfolio in place.  Nevada's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) dictates that solar energy will supply at minimum 1% of the state's total energy use.  Nevada Energy is working diligently to go above and beyond the RPS.  NV Energy supplies energy to the Reno-Sparks area … (0 comments)

The Animal Ark is located just a few minutes outside of downtown Reno.  Here, you can enjoy an up close and personal view of the Reno-Tahoe area's wildlife.  The Animal Ark is not a zoo.  Instead, it can be compared to the legendary Noah's Ark, a refugee for animals.  The Animal Ark is a 38-acre wildlife sanctuary and nature center.  The Animal Ark founders, Diana and Aaron Hiibel, care for local wild animals that can no longer survive in their natural environment.  Among the animals who receive perpetual sanctuary at Animal Ark are desert tortoises, a barn owl, foxes, wolves and a … (0 comments)

reno: Reno Near the Bottom of the Market? - 03/09/09 01:37 PM
Reno and other areas of the nation may be reaching the bottom of the market.  The key to the market now is not the foreclosure rate, but consumer confidence.  Although, nationwide, the delinquency rate is the highest since 1972, the foreclosure rate remained flat for the last three quarters of 2008.  The delinquency rate is now being attributed to the economy rather than sub-prime loans.  The delinquency rate is the number of homeowners who have missed one or more payments (approximately 11% of all mortgage loans).  The foreclosure rate is the number of homes which were foreclosed on by the lender (3.3%).  Housing … (1 comments)

Last week, the Reno City Council approved $4.5 million in funding to help stabilize Reno's real estate market.  Three weeks ago, I told you in my blog, Reno and Sparks To Buy Foreclosed Homes, that the City of Reno and Sparks would be purchasing homes in an attempt to stabilize home values.  The agreement reached between the Reno Housing Authority and the City Council is the next step.  The federal funds will be received through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program and will be allocated to the Washoe County HOME Consortium.  The City of Reno will purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed homes in three neighborhoods.  The rehabilitated … (1 comments)

Reno offers many opportunities to make your Valentine's Day special.  There are casino get-aways, spas, champagne dinners and entertainment.  However, if you are looking for something off the beaten path and different this year, I have a few suggestions. Unique pet-themed Valentine cards are being offered by the Nevada Humane Society at 2825 Longley Lane.  The cards were designed and made by local scouts and no two are alike.  The card feature photos of pets which are available for adoption and are being offered at a special price of two for $5.00.  You can purchase them any day this week between the hours … (0 comments)
