sparks: Funds Approved to Help Stabilize Reno's Real Estate Market - 02/16/09 01:57 PM
Last week, the Reno City Council approved $4.5 million in funding to help stabilize Reno's real estate market.  Three weeks ago, I told you in my blog, Reno and Sparks To Buy Foreclosed Homes, that the City of Reno and Sparks would be purchasing homes in an attempt to stabilize home values.  The agreement reached between the Reno Housing Authority and the City Council is the next step.  The federal funds will be received through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program and will be allocated to the Washoe County HOME Consortium.  The City of Reno will purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed homes in three neighborhoods.  The rehabilitated … (1 comments)

sparks: Reno and Sparks To Buy Foreclosed Homes - 01/26/09 04:46 PM
The Cities of Reno and Sparks, in a joint effort, are planning to buy foreclosed homes under the Government sponsored "Dollar Homes Program".
Once the homes are purchased, Reno and Sparks (under the Reno Housing Authority) will rent the homes to low and moderate income families. The goal is to reduce the standing inventory of foreclosed homes and to stem the blight of unoccupied homes in Reno and Sparks neighborhoods.
David Morton of the Reno Housing Authority has assured council members that the housing authority will impose high standards for the tenants of homes purchased under the program. The goal is … (0 comments)

sparks: Reno's New Year Resolution is to Recycle Electronics - 01/05/09 01:43 PM
New Year's Day is the time many of us make resolutions about our lifestyles. The Greater Reno Area has made a resolution to help you clean out the old, go green and recycle.   The new year is a great time to clean out the garage and get rid of household items that are no longer wanted. Electronic waste seems to be the most difficult for residents to dispose of in a "green" manner. However, this year, the City of Reno, Washoe County, Sparks, the University of Nevada and several local businesses have joined forces to make the job a little easier.   A free … (0 comments)

sparks: Reno, Green Your Christmas Tree - 12/29/08 02:05 PM
Although another Christmas has come and gone, there is still one more gift that you can give. That is the gift of recycling. So, Reno , please green your Christmas Tree.
Recycling has become an important part of our daily lives and is an important part of Christmas giving. Recycling is a gift to yourself as well as others.
You can recycle your Christmas tree from now through January 11, 2009. Reno residents can take their unadorned (please remove all lights and decor) Christmas trees to Shadow Mountain Sports Complex in Sparks (Shadow Lane entrance), Rancho San Rafael Regional Park near the entrance on Coleman … (0 comments)

sparks: An Arm and A Leg - 06/09/08 03:06 PM
Just a few weeks ago, while traveling up North Virginia Street , I saw a sign at the gas station:$3.86 - UnleadedPremium - An ArmDiesel - A Leg
I had to laugh at the honesty of that sign. Now that gas has broken the $4 mark, I am wondering if the gas station owner will be changing that sign to include other body parts.
The reason I am talking about gas prices is not to complain about them, even though I don't like them any more than you do. I am mentioning them because short commute times and miles can result … (0 comments)

sparks: Real Estate - Here and There - 06/02/08 02:20 PM
Real estate markets are changing throughout the nation. The worst in the housing crisis seems to be coming to an end. Sales are up in Washoe County as well as many other parts of the country. Even the hardest hit areas, such as California and Michigan , have seen a marked increase in the number of homes sold.
Here, in the Greater Reno-Tahoe area, home sales are still down compared to 2007; but for the past three months sales volumes have increased over the month prior. According to the most recent report by the University of Nevada, o verall home sales … (0 comments)
