I must admit that I love a good quote. Some of the greatest wisdom is often encapsulated in so few words. It is an art form that I cannot lay claim to. Anyone who knows me will tell you that i have never been accused as being "a man of few words". I think Verbosity should have been my middle name.

I Love Quotations! Go Get "The Go Giver"

If you read nothing else this month - read this!

Written along the same short novel or parable style as Raving Fans by Ken Blanchard (which if you haven't read that, then read it too!), "The Go Giver" is a great short, but powerful, little book that will change the way you look, not just at business, but at life as a whole.

When I say it's short, it took me less than an 90 minutes to read in it's entirety and I am a notoriously slow reader. I read to enjoy and absorb rather than race through just to get the main points. And what main points this book contains....

Discover the 5 Laws of Stratospheric Success as you be a "fly on the wall" as "Joe" meets and learns from several marvelous characters and his business and life evolves day by day. Rather than spoil the story and try to relay the messages that I cannot begin to do as well as Bob Burg and John David Mann can, pick up this little gem and enjoy! I couldn't put it down and read it in a single sitting. (Good thing it was so short!)

I'm Starting My New Year's Resolution Now!

My 2010 New Year's Resolution is to weigh less than 200 lbs by January 1, 2010!

I just got back from Keller Williams Mega Camp in Austin, Texas where there were some amazing and inspirational sessions featuring Liz Murray, a young lady who went from homeless on the street and subways of New York City to graduate from Harvard University and Nick Vujicic, a man who has excelled in living a great life, despite being born without arms and legs!

Both of these very heart-felt and motivating people were there to eliminate my excuses and limiting beliefs.

First, a bit of background. I just turned 51 a couple of months ago. At 43, I had an angioplasty as one of my arteries was completely blocked. (They thought that they were going to have to do bypass surgury but wanted to try angio first and I got lucky.) Despite that luck and having a wonderful family to love and support, I have watched the numbers on the scale climb over the years, finally hitting 230.4 lbs as of Monday morning.

One particular thing that Liz Murray said struck a very loud and clear note with me. She described having to get up before the break of dawn and having to carefully crawl across the bodies of drunk and drugged friends to get out the door to go to school. She talked about the decision you have to make when your hand hits the doorknob and you either open the door and move forward or succumb to what's easy and go back and lie down on the floor.

When she described this I saw my hand, but it wasn't on a regular doorknob. It was on the refrigerator door. Contrary to Liz's challenge, it's a door that I have been opening far too often. I've been making the easy choice - the comfortable choice.

Thanks Liz. I believe that you have changed my life. Nothing could impact my life in a more positive way than losing this excess weight. Your story shamed me into losing my excuses.

THIS is where the famous Agent 007 - James Bond was born???

CAMP X was set up in 1941 as a top secret faciity for training spies for the Allied Forces, including the French Underground and eventually, the United States Secret Services. Founded by the British Secret Service, with the help of a Canadian businessman, William Stephenson, William Stephenson's code name was "Intrepid" and his story is told in the book "A Man Named Intrepid".

Nestled on the shores of Lake Ontario, just 30 minutes east of Toronto, history played out in secrecy that only came to light several years ago.

One of the men who was trained at that facility was a man by the name of Ian Fleming, who would later create the world's most famous spy, James Bond. Apparently when Ian Fleming was training at CAMP X he stayed with family in Toronto on Avenue Road - right across the street from the Saint James Bond Church. (The church was named from the merger of St. James Prebyterian and the Bond Street Congregational Churches)

According to historical accounts, Ian Fleming was not quite the killer that Agent 007 was. Apparently, when it came to having to "kill" an "enemy agent", he was unable to complete his mission and kill someone in cold blood.

The Bestest Father's Day present ever!

My daughter dropped by yesterday. No surprise there really. It was Father's Day and I'm her Dad! We are really close and no matter how old she gets, she'll always be my little girl and yet, I am so proud of the woman she's become!

The real surprise was her Father's Day present to me. It wasn't overly expensive. She didn't have to go to a great deal of trouble to get it. In fact, all she had to do was sit at her computer, hit a few keys and then hit print!

They say that it's the thought that counts.... and her thought may continue "counting" for ever!

My wonderful, thoughtful daughter gave me a Gift Certificate so that I would begin "investing" with KIVA. KIVA is a microlending system where you can lend money (as little as $25) to entrepreneurs that don't have the access to a banking system as they live in poverty or don't have the resources or credit necessary to qualify for a loan.

These people apply for loans for all sorts of needs, many to start or build small businesses to climb out of the poverty. The repayment rate is approximately 98% and you can review all of the different applicants in a variety of way, from how much they are looking to borrow (you can contribute any or all of the request), how much more they need to raise before they can be advanced the loan, what part of the world they live in and more!

Once I reviewed all of the prospective applicants, I chose a young woman much like my daughter, who lives in the Philippines and required a loan to repair and buy new fishing nets. She promises to repay the loan within several months. Once the loan is repayed, I will have the choice to take my money back or reinvest it with someone else.

The interest earned - NOTHING! The payback - knowing that, through my daughter's thoughtfulness, I have helped some motivated young person get a "hand up" to escape poverty and the wonderful feeling that gives me.

You can also join or create a lending group to create a community of like-minded individuals to fund great and lesser causes! I have created a lending group or team called "Real Estate Professionals for KIVA" Please consider joining me in helping to help others get a "hand-up" instead of a "handout"!
