Pricing Historic Homes in Urban Markets - Step One - Make Like a Boy Scout... - 10/30/09 07:06 AM
Maryland, and Baltimore in particular has been voted the most visibly historic town in America.  There are lots of historic neighborhoods, historic homes not just in Baltimore but across the state.  Pricing homes that are visibly historic, on the National Register of Hisoric Places or within historic districs can be both a challenge and time consuming.
If you are in the market to purchase an historic home or are in the market to sell an historic home then you want to work with an agent that is familiar with historic properties, historic neighborhoods, the local enforcement requirements for maintaining and improving historic homes.

How To Buy A Short Sale - A Must Read For Agents and Buyers! - 10/29/09 07:18 AM
In this market place, short sales are a fact and are here to stay.  It is important for agents to know what to ask and how to proceed with a short sale rather than avoid them all together.  At Advance Realty Anne Arundel we have a lot of short sales listed and for the most part we work with a third party negotiator that specializes in short sales and loan modifications.

Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland - Market Update for the Week Ending October 24, 2009
The Anne Arundel County real estate market has been seeing a welcome increase in sales and settlements over the past weeks, the sales are edging higher.  Interest rates are still low.  The home sales still aren't as swift as we would like to see, however, they are remaining fairly stable.  The number of new listings has declined steadily over the past few weeks and we are seeing a slight increase in the number of homes going under contract and settling.  Home prices are also remaining fairly stable as we move into the Thanksgiving … (0 comments)

Fridays Foto - Things You See Driving Down the Road - 10/23/09 06:19 AM

Last Thursday we left for a few days R & R, right after school let out.  We were driving around the Baltimore Beltway when we saw this on the back of a flat bed trailer.  I don't always have my camera at the ready like this, and I don't always have someone riding shot gun - but Thursday I was ready with both.

Fall Garden Planning - 10/13/09 02:33 PM

Fall Garden Planning
I wrote this blog this time last year and the information is still very good.  I recycled it and added some things to update it for this year.  Fall is a special time in the garden.  I personally love the fall, love the cooler weather, crispy cool days, the bounty of the summer labors and most of all I love the fall colors.  But don't put away those gardening tools just yet.  Fall is the perfect time to plant cool-season crops and get a head start on the landscaping for next year.  And, if you are planning … (2 comments)

Diary of a Realtor Turned Rehabber - cont'd
I haven't posted in a while about my rehab project.  In April my friend, Betsy, and I bought a semi detached house in the historic part of Towson, MD.  In the beginning it was a shell, four walls, windows, floors and a roof.  The furnace and hot water heater were new and in good condition and we were able to keep those.  When we bought the house, it was full of drywall, insulation and some other building materials.
We removed a lot of the materials out of the house and put them in … (2 comments)

I set my sights on a goal and I reached it. One down, more to come. - 10/12/09 04:52 PM
It is that time of year again, when agents should be sitting down with their mentors, coaches or office managers and set their goals for the next year and work out a plan to achieve it.  Being in an office that supports you in the pursuit of your goals is key.
Have you set your goals for next year?  Has your office manager asked you to make an appointment to set your goals for the next year?  If you feel that you don't have the support of your team, then perhaps you should think about making a change in brokerages.

Nanaimo Bars - Recipe - 10/12/09 04:38 PM
Nanaimo Bars Recipe
At every Canadian special occasion these are always a favorite.  James made some last night for our Canadian Thanksgiving and I almost didn't get any (but then he whispered in my ear that he'd saved one especially for me).  You'll want to cut these in rather small pieces because they are very sweet and very rich tasting (but oh so divine!!).
Bottom Layer
1/2 c. butter (or margarine - but butter is better)
1/4 c. white sugar
5 tbsp cocoa
1 egg, beaten
1 3/4 c. graham cracker crumbs
3/4 c. fine coconut
1/2 c. finely chopped walnuts

Happy Thanksgiving to Our Canadian Neighbours - 10/10/09 09:21 PM
Happy Thanksgiving to Our Canadian Neighbours
This weekend marks the Canadian Thanksgiving celebrations.  Canadian Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October and here in the United States it is Columbus Day on Monday.  Many don't know this, but, I am Canadian.  I moved to Baltimore in 1997 from Waterloo, Ontario.  I still celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving with my family and friends, we also celebrate American Thanksgiving in November.  And, tomorrow many of my Canadian friends and I will gather together in celebration and friendship for a potluck dinner.  Last year over 50 of us joined together to enjoy all the … (2 comments)

Some Tips for Preparing Your Home for the Winter Season - 10/09/09 09:41 PM
Some Tips for Preparing Your Home for the Winter Season
As winter approaches it is important for us to prepare our homes for the cooler weather.  Taking the time to do some work now may save on some major expenses later. Some of these tasks can be performed by you, and some may need to be done by a professional.
Clear debris such as leaves and twigs out of your window wells, gutters, downspouts, and storm drains. Drain and remove garden hoses from spouts and store for the winter. Wrap spouts in insulation.  Turn off the water supply to out door … (4 comments)

Teaching Your Kids About The Value of Money - Some Tips for Future Homeowners
If the current economic climate has taught us anything, it should be that financial education and responsibility for your financial health are crucial. But, all too often kids grow up buffered from the financial world around them. As a result, they are often totally ill equipped to manage their own finances when they become adults and leave home.  I see this with my own adult children now.  But, I still have a chance with my 11 year old.
With the economy in the news almost daily and rumors that FHA is now … (3 comments)
