Caritas of Austin hosted their 19th Annual Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. Approximately 14,000 runners and/or walkers gathered in downtown Austin at Waterloo Park to start off their Thanksgiving day with a 5 mile journey to raise funds for Caritas of Austin. This year's event was expected to be the largest Turkey Trot ever and it is hopeful that proceeds from the event will top $200K.
Caritas of Austin is a non-profit organization that strives to provide a service continuum for those experiencing poverty that begins with a safety net and links them to resources to achieve self-sufficiency. Caritas envisions a community where there is respect for all individuals, hope for those experiencing poverty and opportunities for self-reliance.
There are four main branches of service at Caritas including housing, food, education and employment. The housing service focuses on helping Travis County individuals and families facing temporary financial crisis to access housing or maintain their current housing stability. Food service is achieved as Caritas provides free lunches - with no questions asked - to over 350 individuals and families every Monday thru Saturday. Education service is provided to clients with opportunities to enrich their lives in order to support their self-sufficiency (ex. literacy classes, life skills classes, English as a second language and job readiness). Employment services provides opportunities for short-term & long-term career development.
The Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot is Caritas of Austin's largest fundraiser for the year. In true Central Texas fashion, families and friends came together to begin their Thanksgiving day by supporting a great cause ......... and having a ton of fun doing it!
