PICKING FUN THINGS TO DO IN BLUE RIDGE GEORIGA!

If you’re looking for a new way to get out and enjoy the beauty of the North Georgia mountains, look no further than Merciers Apple Orchards in Blue Ridge, Georgia. September is the month when, every year, Merciers opens their groves to the public. Every weekend for the entire month you can board the tram and venture out to the vast fields of apple trees and pick the fruits of your own labors.

Once you board the wagon and journey out to the fields of apple trees, you will find yourself surrounded by the most diverse selection of apple varieties to choose from, though you'll want to note that different varieties ripen throughout the month. Every row is clearly labeled, but the only way to truly know which flavors appeal to you the most is… you guessed it… eat your way through the orchard.

Everywhere you turn there are fruit laden branches as far as the eye can see; every branch bursting with apples. Some trees have more apples than leaves or branches. No ladders or climbing are required because most of the trees are newer and the fruit is easily accessible, though a long reach can come in handy.

We were told not to worry about all the fruit that falls to the ground, as it is composted into the soil for next year’s fruit, and there’s more than enough apples for the plethora of tourists and locals that get to attend this time honored tradition.

It’s really quite simple. You enter the store and there in the front is the U-pick desk where you can purchase your bushel or 1 & ½ bushel bags. Then you head out to tram stop and hitch a ride out into the the fields where you are surrounded by tree covered hills and picturesque views.

With all that Mercier Orchards has to offer, extensive gift shops and a full service café and bakery, it’s easy to turn this visit into an all day affair. We love to go as a family, and find this more entertaining than a movie, with the added benefit of free healthy snacks and even more treats to bring home.

During other months, Merciers Orchards also offers pick-your-own Cherries, Blueberries, and next year, they are adding Strawberries to their selection, so whenever you visit, don’t miss this fun-filled fruit-filled excursion. And after a day of picking our favorites, all I have to say is... HOW YA LIKE THEM APPLES!?

L.&L. Beanery & Café in historic downtown Blue Ridge Georgia has done it again! Last year they expanded their unique coffee shop & bakery to include a very successful breakfast and luncheon café, and now, this: Great dining with fine food, libations and live music, set in an ambient atmosphere that reeks of high quality, but offers diners an affordable elegant evening.

We were seated right away. The accent lighting and live music created the perfect setting for a fine dining experience. It was a pleasure to finally be offered a wine list with dinner, as Blue Ridge is no longer a DRY county. By the bottle or by the glass, the prices were a pleasant surprise. We decided on a Riesling, and the entire bottle was $17.00. It was crisp and light, a great accompaniment to the vegetarian lasagna, which was a gourmet step above any lasagna I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying. We were left with no room for dessert, but the plethera of delectable offerings were tough to resist.

I know this new night spot will fill a niche that Blue Ridge area residents and visitors have been painfully aware of: someplace to have a lovely dinner with a bottle of wine and not end up spending a week’s pay. With the passing of the liquor licensing laws, it seems Blue Ridge will soon be the site of many quaint taverns and local breweries. There are two more evening establishments already in the works just around the corner, getting ready for an opening this Fall.

Little by little, places like L.&L. Beanery and Merciers Orchard & Café are offering later hours for those who like to stay up past sunset. Little by little, little Blue Ridge Georgia is stepping up with the times and expanding on what it offers visitors and residents. It’s actually an exciting evolution to watch. Bravo L.&L.!

P.S.- Dinner is ONLY offered Friday and Saturday nights, at this point. Due to the crowds we experience up here in the mountains during the Fall, be prepared to linger and enjoy the ambience, as home-made foods and persoanable waitstaff combined with high customer volume can create wait times.

Reflections of a Father's Day

I wish every Dad the type of Father’s Day I had this past weekend. I really needed a day like that. A brief, but cherished day in the life where my children took the time and expressed their love for “their Dad”. A man cannot help but realize that despite being a mere mortal like everyone else, his children manage to see him as iconic; a role model for their life expectations. It reminds me how important it is to lead by example.

What touched me the most is that I realized my children inherited a great gift from me…one I consider the most important characteristic to surviving and thriving in life…a great appreciation for HUMOR.

Don’t get me wrong, they are a quite a soulful, intelligent trio, but I love to laugh with them. I guess what I love most about life is it’s irony, and it’s ability to us make laugh at ourselves and smile from deep within ourselves. A sense of humor is a must, especially when faced with the likes of the recent tough times and the downturn in the market. It’s our ability to laugh at what might otherwise make us cry that saves us in the end.

My kids made me a mini-movie DVD…they have such technological advantages over us “old-tymers”…which showed their great humor and appreciation for who I really am. The thing that touched me the most is that they love my flaws, as well as my strengths, and that speaks volumes to the sincerity of their love in my book.

I feel revitalized this week after a great day like last Sunday. It just goes to show, it is quality and not quantity that makes the difference.

IT'S ON THE RISE!

I had some really good news from our company's mortgage specialist that I thought I'd share. There's been enough bad news passed around...I feel we are all overdue something positive. According to her industry sources, (from figures derived from area appraisals and AVMs) in our county and surrounding counties (according to zip code), we have moved from the soft (declining) market list to the stable market conditions list! It's official...things are looking up!

AMEN! I've been so ready to hear those words. In our office, it has felt like things have been picking up, but I didn't want to jump the gun and get my hopes up too high, but this confirms what I've been seeing... the market is like a patient on the mend, and has moved from intensive care to patient discharge. Good health looks inevitable, and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The indicator from the finance companies underwriting engine has shown our area's zip codes in decline since early 2008, but now that our market has stabilized, LTVs should be on the rise for our Buyers, as well.

So I am all for spreading the word..."We have scraped bottom and are on our way back up." Buyers: Time to BUY... don't miss your chance.

One of the things I absolutely love about living in Blue Ridge Georgia is that even though we are far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern world in many ways, in just over an hour, we can be in one of the largest cities in the United States: Atlanta.

Yesterday, we took the whole family to see “The Jersey Boys” a Broadway musical at the fabulous Fox Theater. This is not a review of the show, though it was fantastic…I’d recommend it to anyone, especially if you know anyone from Jersey.

It’s just so great to be able to access that level of performance from where we live. Pablo Picasso said that Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life, and life in Blue Ridge can get pretty dusty. It is so refreshing to take a day trip down to the city and briefly experience the energy and dynamics of city living.

Of course it isn’t long before the noise, traffic and crowded conditions work their magic, and we all long for the peace and solitude that abounds in Blue Ridge. Just the same, it’s amazing that every show I’ve seen on Broadway has come to Atlanta. There’s so much culture, arts & events every week that you can always find something to do there. And when I’ve had my fill of city life, I can go home and rest my head in my own log cabin in the mountains; where life runs at a slower pace, and so does my blood pressure. Amen.

There is good news for Georgia home buyers and sellers! This month, in addition to the federal $8,000 tax credit, Georgia has an additional state tax credit for home buyers in 2009. The tax credit legislation was signed into law on May 11, 2009 by Governor Sonny Perdue, with the help of House Sponsor Ron Stephens (Savannah), House Ways and Means Chairman Larry O'Neal (Warner Robins) and Senate Chairman Chip Pearson (Dawsonville).

The amount of the credit is 1.2% of the purchase price up to $1,800 non-repayable, to be spread equally annually, over the next three years. A great thing about the Georgia tax credit is that unlike the federal tax initiative, this money is not limited to just first-time homebuyers, but ALL single family residences (1 per family). The credit is only available to buyers of eligible single family residences who close between June 1 and November 30 of 2009.

There are also no income limits for home buyers, either. The only stipulation buyers should be aware of is that to qualify for the tax credit, the home must have been listed for sale prior to May 11th, 2009; as the intent of the law was to reduce the overstock of our state's inventory. Also, in our market, second-home purchases do not qualify for this tax credit. Still, this is one more nudge to move our economy in the right direction, and every little bit helps. GO GEORGIA!

"GREEN" COMES TO BLUE RIDGE

I’m very excited to announce that I am part of a new Real Estate team that is representing our area’s first “Certified Green” development. At the beginning of this year, my self and two of m y co-workers decided to enroll in the real estate classes to receive our National Association of Realtors GREEN designation. We now, unoriginally, call ourselves “The Green Team.”

We did not get this designation just because we had an interest in the new eco-friendly trends that are influencing builders these days, though we do, but we were spurred on because we were trying to secure the listings of a new developer who is "Green" through and though. We have succeeded, and now are the proud representatives of Toccoa Camp in beautiful Blue Ridge Georgia .

This gated, six homesite community features homes that are not only certified at the highest level by EarthCraft, but also by Energy Star. Even the land, which is fronted on the Toccoa River, has special rainwater drainage filtration to insure that the run off is cleaned before it reenters the river.

There are only 2 building lots still available. There are also two spectacular waterfront homes for sale. I love being part of a small town community because the members of this township are not so great in number and so extremely busy that they don’t know or notice their neighbors. The way this community cares for those less fortunate is what really stands out in this dog-eat-dog busy world we so often find ourselves living in.

This season ground was broken for the first component of a new program being developed here in Blue Ridge. "Feed Fannin" is a volunteer group with the mission to eliminate hunger and help feed the less fortunate in our area with fresh grown food.

All produce grown will be donated to feed the people at the homeless shelter in Fannin County’s Family Connections Resource Center.

“Feed Fannin” is modeled off of the Cartecay community garden in Gilmer County. That group began 5 years ago on a small donated plot, and they managed to produce over 700 lbs of vegetables in its first year. Only five years later, their goal is is up to 22,000 lbs in their now 45,000 sq ft garden.

Over 50 volunteers, many senior citizens, are in the process of fertilizing, planting and hoping to encourage residents to donate manure for the strictly organic garden. The organization even received a brand new Kubota tractor, donated by “Mason Equipment Rental & Tire Center. Everyone in the community is invited to participate.

Those that don’t have money to give can still contribute by donating their time to the garden to help those who are less fortunate. If you don’t have the time, but would like to make a financial donation, your money will be used to buy seed and fertilizer and nothing will go to waste in this eco-friendly endeavor.

UPS & DOWNS IN TODAY'S MARKETPLACE

I have good news and bad news. First, the good news; the Real Estate business is activity; the bad news is ACTIVTY DOESN’T ALWAYS = CONTRACTS. My phone is ringing off the hook with leads, listings and showings; even Buyers, but noone seems in a hurry to make a move. There’s more bad news.

All this activity keeps me busy, but I have no time left to Blog. I feared this would happen, and I hear it all the time. Blogs bring success…success leaves little time to Blog. I am just taking some time tonight to report that although my blogging has been a little lax, I am going to utilize my time in the airport waiting for my flight to rectify this situation.

Everyone was waiting for the “bottom” of the real estate market to hit. Of course there is no absolute “bottom” to hit, but most market reports suggest the “bottom” has come and gone. The reaction in the market is a flurry of activity, but there is an understandable hesitancy to today’s Buyer.

In other words, a year of people listening to the horror stories and staying inactive, paralyzed with fear is not shaken off over night. However, we have seen this past month, people get out there and start to make purchases, reducing the inventory and eliminating the surplus properties, so eventually, the market will begin to follow and move in a positive direction, but as predicted, it’s not gonna happen with any speed, despite the need.

I believe this is one of the best times in the history of our country to buy real estate. The low rates and low prices are some of the best we have ever had available, and it is not a mistake to make a move and buy now if you have the means. There are enough great opportunities for everyone to get an amazing deal in the current market, but if you are just waiting for the dust to settle, perhaps you should reevaluate. What are you waiting for? Help yourself, help the economy…buy a new home.

ARTS IN THE PARK, BLUE RIDGE GEORGIA

This weekend is one of my favorite events in Blue Ridge Georgia; Arts In The Park.

This festival brings all types of artists together in outdoor diplays throughout the downtown Blue Ridge green. Sponsored by the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association, individial artists submit their works for approval to be on diplay in what has become one of the largest arts festivals in the Tri-State area. The genres used by the artists range from wood and natural materials, to photographers, painters, sculptors and a plethora of unique offerings.

Of course, you'll find food vendors there, so you can make it through a full day of art viewing and shopping without having to take a break. My favorite vendor at the event is the homemade soda pop stand, with Sasparilla, Root Beer, Cream Soda, Cherry Wine, and other old fashioned concoctions you’ve only heard tell of in old stories.

The combination of May’s breath-taking weather, the eye-catching displays, and the leisurely pace of strolling through the park and gravitating towards whatever catches your eye makes for a most enjoyable day that leads to a deeper understanding of why "Art" is considered good for the soul.

Blue Ridge is less than 90 minutes from Atlanta, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee, so get creative and take a day trip to the mountains. "Arts In The Park" will be held Memorial Day weekend, Saturday & Sunday, May 23rd & 24th. Admission is usually free, but due to budget cuts for the arts, a 3 dollar donation is suggested to help the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association.

PROM TIME

Today, I got my son ready for his first Prom. It's a little different than when I helped my daughter get ready for her first prom. In both cases, my lovely wife was Missing In Action; off at a writer's convention both times, which shows how long she's been writing, and how old I'm getting.

I can remember when I helped my daughter 5 years ago, I was in the middle of splattering 20 dancers in white unitards with several colors of dye, and then hosing each one down, in order to color the costumes, when my "little girl" pulled up in her prom gown and said, "I need you to do my hair, mom's gone and you have to do it"...of course I did. It was a skill of the trade.

Today, I am in the middle of 7 real estate deals, between contracts and listings, and once again, Dad takes a break for Prom prep. My son has never worn cuff links, never worn button covers, never worn a tie. Our culture has gotten away from formal dressing on special occasions in favor of "Keeping it Real".

When I was young, young men always wore a suit at Easter, and for Christmas, sometimes even Thanksgiving. We wore ties every Sunday at church, and we all wore ties in our High School yearbook photos. We dressed up if we went to the theater or a concert, and for school dances. By the time I was 12, I had been well schooled in how to tie a Windsor knot and a 1/2 Windsor knot in a tie, and Catholic High School cinched the knot with a daily dress code of tie and suit jacket.

Needless to say, I had no trouble schooling my hip teen in formal attire, but it was much less stressful than when I was helping my daughter. He was so calm, so I decided to prep him not just on how to dress & behave, but also how to be understanding of his girlfriends emotions, being she was probably much more invested in this dress up event than he was. He explained that he already had figured that out by the way she'd been acting so stressed all week. Ah, young love...so glad I'm long married and through with all those turmultuous hormone-filled days. (Who am I kidding, there's always menopause).

The only disappointing part of getting my son ready was in the photo opp department. With my daughter, I got to take photos of the young man who came to claim my daughter, and his date; the lovely couple... whereas now, I just have pictures of my son in a tux.

Oh boy, here's a shot of him driving to pick up said prom date, but I have no pictures of his first official girl/boy thingy. I'm sure he will get formal shots done at the event, but I love those informal in the front yard shots that reek of tacky parental nostalgia. And what if he acts kewl and doesn't smile in his photos, or worse, acts goofy, as he is prone to doing in serious events. (Doesn't get it from me)

Its just funny, when I was looking at him all dressed up, it's too easy to imagine him getting married. Then, I thought of the suit I got married in that I have saved all these years, and that he is probably just about ready to fit into it. Heck, he's alot closer to fitting in it than I am. It just seems that these life events are like snapshots you remember all your life, and you wonder what happened to the time in between. Where'd it all go, and what did I do with it?

I look back five years ago, to when we left Florida and our business of twenty years; setting out to find something more "real." Now, five years later, I got the "real" part right anyway...REAL ESTATE, but I'm still busy working all the time.

Still, I have had time with my kids, and I am still able to take a break from my busy work day to help my son get ready for something he will probably always remember, or the next time he puts on a tux; maybe his wedding day. He'll remember that I was there, and that's the most important thing we've gotten from this move.

Yes, mountain country is truly beautiful, and the community is charming, but the most important thing for me is that I have been able to be there for all these events that matter, and that's what matters most to me and my family. No matter where life takes us, nothing will ever take away this time we've had with our kids. And there's nothing more real than seeing your kids happy.

When you come to Blue Ridge Georgia, you won't find a lot of franchises crowding the streets. For coffee drinkers, this means NO Starbucks, but that isn't to say we don't have a fine coffee shop. L & L Beanery, located in historic downtown Blue Ridge, offers gourmet coffee drinks and a whole lot more.

Built in the town's historic bank building, it's no surprise that in the original bank's walk-in safe you find an ample supply of their valuables: coffee. With a huge stone fireplace and hearth, high pressed tin ceilings and an eclectic mix of antique seating, L & L Beanery exudes an olde tyme charm that abounds in Blue Ridge, but they're not just serving coffee anymore. Now with a full service bistro serving breakfast and lunch, and an amazing in-house bakery, you will always find a delicious array of edibles that will please your pallette and your sense of home-town authenticity.

There is a huge difference between the franchise coffee experience and having a cup of coffee at The Beanery, as we locals call it. The coffee is always fresh, but blends vary as to what is fresh and available each week. You may even have to ocasionally wait for service, if there is a line, because even in the busiest of circumastances, the waitstaff and baristas will always stop to converse with customers and treat every individual like a person, not a client. There is a lasifaire approach inherent in every bit of authentic country life, even in our businesses, but there is a personal caring touch that is unparralleld by the most efficient, calculated fast food franchises.

It takes getting used to, but once you get used to the pace and quality of the L & L Beanery experience, you'll always feel like you're settling for less in our modern day convenient franchises. And if you visit, try the almond torte...it's my favorite.

TOURING TOURISM IN BLUE RIDGE GEORGIA

In the Leadership Fannin seminar I am currently participating in, our jolly group spent the day learning about tourism in the Fannin County area. Blue Ridge Georgia has a lot to offer, beyond the beautiful rivers, mountains and lakes that grace the surrounding landscape. The day began with area arts organizations giving lectures at the Blue Ridge Community Theater. We heard speakers from the Theater itself, as well as various arts organizations throughout the county. There are a lot of groups in this area, from the Sustainable Arts Society that houses artists with grant monies to encourage the development of artists in our country, to our very own Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Association, which is a very active regional arts group providing outlets, classes and events that promote the Arts throughout Fannin County and beyond.

From the Theater we took the Historic Blue Ridge Scenic Railway where we enjoyed the scenery and history of an area with a rich past and richer landscapes. There is something so realaxing about the rythmic motion and leisurley pace of the train, even the antiquated sqealing wheels only adds to the nostalgia. From the shopping area in McCaysville, we bussed to Mercier Orchards. We were served a lovely lunch while being lectured to by Mr. Tim Mercier, the owner and 2nd generation of Merciers to run this larger than life operation. We were given a "backstage pass" to see the workings of an agricultural operation that is truly more than meets the eye. There is even a complicated science to growing apples, and let's just say, "I'm glad there wasn't a test after the tour."

And we really just scratched the surface of things to do in this area. It was informative and exciting to see what a rich and diverse area we live in that has so much to offer visitiors. BOWL ME OVER

For those that may have read my blog last month,you'll remeber that I sold a large historic homestead in Brasstown, North Carolina. Not only was it a large sale, but the seller was also a dear friend, and a renowned woodturning artist. Many of her works can be seen in galleries from Blue Ridge to Chattanooga. She is best known for the grand size of her bowls, which also command a sizable price. I own one of her small pieces, a silver maple vase, and I cherish it because it is probably the only Oland piece I would ever afford to own, that is until now.

I have long been a great admirer of Lissi's style, and I love the massive size of her works, as well. I'm a big guy and I like big stuff, what can I say. One piece Lissi had recently been working on the lathe I had a particular penchant for. I fancied it to be one of my favorites that she had done. Well, Lissi finished it and presented to me as a gift this past weekend.

Lissi is leaving for Denmark and will not likely be returning, so this was her farewell gesture of freindship, and talk about "bowling me over". I never expected to recieve such a gift and am still in shock, with a heavy dash of being thirlled. The bowl is a live-edge work and freeform in shape, and there is just something about it that pulls me in like the earth to the sun. I am overwhelmed with her generosisty, and excited to always have a piece that is not only beautiful in form, but beautiful in nature, as it will always remind me of my friend, and the art that brought us together.

I look forward to the day I visit Denmark and Lissi's new home, but until then, I have a bowl that reminds me of the size of her heart, and the generous artist I consider myself blessed to know.

JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIES

The area of the country I live in is, in my humble opinion, is one of the most beautiful areas of this great country. The Southern Appalanchians offer some of the most spectacular views and countryside you may have ever seen. Most people who come here make remarks like "it's like a postcard" or "It's like in a movie". Well that may very well be the case, as our own Fannin County has been the site of some movie filming this year.

In McCaysville Georgia, producer Randi Johnson oversaw the shooting of a new film pilot, "Charlie". The plot boils down to a Grandfather/Grandson team-effort detective story. The setting for the film is the old train trestle crossing over the Toccoa River. The authentic boxcars and locomotive from the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway were borrowed for the filming.

Another film, title not yet disclosed, was shooting in Southern Georgia, and one of the film's stars came up to Blue Ridge on their break to buy a getaway place here in the mountains. With my help, they found a great little cabin with acreage and plan to visit it often, between shooting movies.

The state of Georgia actually gives tax incentives for production companies that come to film in the state, providing there is a win-win benefit from the influx of business from their efforts, but that's not the reason these folks are coming to Georgia. There's a majesty and a magic to this area, an old time community and sense of values that remind us of where and when we grew up, and it doesn't take a team of movie star detectives to figure out what a special place Blue Ridge is, or why so many people choose to live and visit here. You can find us in the movies, or just plan a vacation and see it for yourself. I suggest the latter.

BLOGGING EXERCISE

No, it's not your imagination, I've gone MIA (Missing In Action). I'm afraid I've been a bad blogger. You see, I realize that blogging, like my exercise regimen, is something that is easy to get distracted from if I'm not committed and aware.

I had to go out of town for a couple of back to back trips, and got back to find myself backed up at work. Before I knew it, two weeks had flown by, and not only did I stop exercising daily, but my blogging is equally unvisited. Now, after just a couple of weeks, I am encountering great resistance to getting back into my old routines.

This blog is my way back. I go back to blog basics and write about where I am in the moment, and what thoughts I am facing in my every day life. Now, after writing this, I just need to get out of my office and go for a long walk. Exercising my mind and my body feels good, but in either case, it amazes me how fast I get out of shape, and how hard it feels to make the time for both.

The good news is that the Real Estate business in Blue Ridge is good and sales are continuing to pick up. The market is staying active in this area, now it's my turn to do the same, and not just with blogging. The blogging can be done without getting off my butt, but exercise is another story. If only I could blog on the treadmill. Then I could do double duty. Either way, I'll keep you posted...promise.

BLESSINGS OR A CURSE?

So it never fails, I leave the office for a 2-day trip, and within hours of getting in the car and hitting the road, I get a call and I find I'm in negotiations for a big involved contract on one of my listings. Then, another deal I have put to bed until closing, opens itself up to some new dilemmas, and I am pulling off the road to the nearest Starbucks so I can get on the wireless network and start my email correspondence with all parties to remedy the situation.

Now I swear, If I were in the office, nothing would be going on, but it's like a magic charm, if ever I go away from the office for any reason, WHAM, stuff happens. I'm beginning to think I need to go away more often... it's so good for business... but the stress would kill me.

I am supposed to be leaving right after I get back. I am scheduled to take my wife overseas for her birthday, but I'm thinking that I'd better get a global phone and bring my laptop with me, because if I am going that far for 5 whole days, I can only imagine how crazy busy things are going to get. I must admit I am awfully grateful, after all, these are the problems we all need more of, eh.
