blue ridge georgia: COUNTRY'S NOT SO FAR FROM THE CITY - 06/08/09 10:53 AM
One of the things I absolutely love about living in Blue Ridge Georgia is that even though we are far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern world in many ways, in just over an hour, we can be in one of the largest cities in the United States: Atlanta. Yesterday, we took the whole family to see “The Jersey Boys” a Broadway musical at the fabulous Fox Theater. This is not a review of the show, though it was fantastic…I’d recommend it to anyone, especially if you know anyone from Jersey. It’s just so great to be able … (4 comments)

blue ridge georgia: "GREEN" COMES TO BLUE RIDGE - 05/26/09 10:03 AM
I’m very excited to announce that I am part of a new Real Estate team that is representing our area’s first “Certified Green” development. At the beginning of this year, my self and two of m y co-workers decided to enroll in the real estate classes to receive our National Association of Realtors GREEN designation. We now, unoriginally, call ourselves “The Green Team.” We did not get this designation just because we had an interest in the new eco-friendly trends that are influencing builders these days, though we do, but we were spurred on because we were trying to secure the … (4 comments)

blue ridge georgia: HUNGRY FOR COMMUNITY CARING: “FEED FANNIN” IS BORN! - 05/22/09 05:09 PM
I love being part of a small town community because the members of this township are not so great in number and so extremely busy that they don’t know or notice their neighbors. The way this community cares for those less fortunate is what really stands out in this dog-eat-dog busy world we so often find ourselves living in. This season ground was broken for the first component of a new program being developed here in Blue Ridge. "Feed Fannin" is a volunteer group with the mission to eliminate hunger and help feed the less fortunate in our area with fresh … (3 comments)

blue ridge georgia: L & L BEANERY, COFFEE & MORE! - 04/28/09 04:35 PM
When you come to Blue Ridge Georgia, you won't find a lot of franchises crowding the streets. For coffee drinkers, this means NO Starbucks, but that isn't to say we don't have a fine coffee shop. L & L Beanery, located in historic downtown Blue Ridge, offers gourmet coffee drinks and a whole lot more.
Built in the town's historic bank building, it's no surprise that in the original bank's walk-in safe you find an ample supply of their valuables: coffee. With a huge stone fireplace and hearth, high pressed tin ceilings and an eclectic mix of antique seating, L … (4 comments)

blue ridge georgia: TOURING TOURISM IN BLUE RIDGE GEORGIA - 04/27/09 05:39 PM
In the Leadership Fannin seminar I am currently participating in, our jolly group spent the day learning about tourism in the Fannin County area. Blue Ridge Georgia has a lot to offer, beyond the beautiful rivers, mountains and lakes that grace the surrounding landscape. The day began with area arts organizations giving lectures at the Blue Ridge Community Theater. We heard speakers from the Theater itself, as well as various arts organizations throughout the county. There are a lot of groups in this area, from the Sustainable Arts Society that houses artists with grant monies to encourage the development of artists … (0 comments)

blue ridge georgia: JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIES - 04/21/09 04:44 PM
The area of the country I live in is, in my humble opinion, is one of the most beautiful areas of this great country. The Southern Appalanchians offer some of the most spectacular views and countryside you may have ever seen. Most people who come here make remarks like "it's like a postcard" or "It's like in a movie". Well that may very well be the case, as our own Fannin County has been the site of some movie filming this year. In McCaysville Georgia, producer Randi Johnson oversaw the shooting of a new film pilot, "Charlie". The plot boils down … (0 comments)

blue ridge georgia: IL FORNO: A PIECE OF ITALY IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS - 04/05/09 01:03 PM
I love good, brick-oven baked pizza. For me, there's nothing like it. There are several great pizzerias in Atlanta, but that's almost 2 hours from where we live up here in the North Georgia mountains, so I have been "jonesing" for a great pizza joint to come to this area.
The Blue Ridge area has several franchise pizza joints, but if you are a "pizza snob", which I have found out recently, I AM, there is a taste of Italy right here in our own back yard. In Ellijay, Georgia, in a strip mall across from a Dominos Pizza, is … (3 comments)

blue ridge georgia: POURING INTO THE CITY - 04/03/09 01:56 PM
The City of Blue Ridge, Georgia took it's first steps towards wetting it's whistle, when the city council of Blue Ridge, in a 3 to 2 vote, elected to enact an ordinance to offer pouring licenses within the city limits. Last fall, Fannin County passed the liquor license law, changing our county from high and dry to wet n' wild. Now, the same seems to be occurring in the city limits, and most would say, "it's long overdue." This is really great news for local restaurants who desperately need a boost to survive in this economy. The addition of liquor to … (0 comments)

blue ridge georgia: START FRESH/SPRING FORWARD - 03/24/09 02:15 PM
I don't know what it is, but there's just something about Spring in the Mountains that rejuvenates my winter weary soul. The dismal colorless winter gives way to the new life and color of Spring in all it's glory. It reminds me of the recent economic seasons we have been experiencing, believe it or not, and I see sign of Spring there, too. In the winter, things seem bleak and desolate. It's harder to get out of bed in the morning and face the cold relentless weather out there. You just want to pull the covers over your head and stay … (17 comments)

blue ridge georgia: SAY "NO" TO RECESSION! - 03/22/09 03:00 PM
Someone sent this link to me in an email. They said it reminded them of me. I clicked on it, and I LOVE IT! It is entitled,
"NO RECESSION FOR ME".
Definitely, CLICK THE IMAGE & check it out. I love the attitude this little info-video takes on staying positive and proactive during a critical time, where the answer is not to give in to the FEAR, but say NO to it, and keep forging ahead, working harder to make a difference (my personal philosophy). It also mentions staying away from overdoses of negativity in the news, which I agree with … (4 comments)

blue ridge georgia: CATCH THE WAVE! - 03/22/09 11:52 AM
If you've ever visited Blue Ridge, Georgia, you've probably been waved to by various members of the local community. There's an old time feel to the Blue Ridge lifestyle that is reminiscent of the days some of us grew up in, before shops stayed open past 7 pm, or opened on Sundays. 10 years ago, there weren't even traffic lights in this sleepy little town. A fun night in Blue Ridge consisted of sitting on your front porch step, watching the sun go down, waving to the neighbors. Now, let me preface this by saying this lifestyle is not for everyone, … (0 comments)

blue ridge georgia: ONE GOOD TURNER DESERVES ANOTHER - 03/17/09 04:26 PM
Lissi Oland is a big part of why I left my old life in the busy city and moved to the mountains in search of a simpler existence. I have retold in other entries how it was during the first time my wife and I visited downtown Blue Ridge that we started thinking about selling our business and moving to the mountains. We were thinking of options for what we might do in this new life. What I didn’t go into was how I set out on the path to study wood working; wood turning to be exact. My wife and … (0 comments)

blue ridge georgia: MOUNTAIN HIGH - 02/26/09 09:22 PM
The other morning, while I was out putting up a sign and lockbox on a new listing in Mountain High subdivision, I couldn't help but notice the beautiful layers of mountains draped in the misty morning fog. I always try to take advantage of a photo opportunity when I see one.
The mountain view encompasses three states worth of mountians; North Caprolina, Georgia & Tennessee. Here are a couple of the shots I took. It was even more breathtaking in person. Can you imagine waking up to this view every morning? And the Blue Ridge mountains are really that BLUE.

blue ridge georgia: COCKY RESIDENTS - 02/25/09 03:33 PM

Why did the Chicken cross the road? (And how does he know to use the crosswalk?) The answer to this age-old question, and many others can be found in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Not to be too cocky, but Blue Ridge is a town like no other that exists in this day and age, and residents like it that way. Though many city downtown areas are foul, only in Blue Ridge will you find such pride in the downtown area’s “fowl”ness. Sometimes, you just gotta “crow” about what makes you special, silly as it may be. When you visit the Blue … (2 comments)

blue ridge georgia: THE NOT-SO-SIMPLE LIFE - 02/20/09 02:02 PM

Blue Ridge, Georgia draws people to it, like a magnet. It’s a special place, almost like stepping back into a simpler time, to when life was slower paced and people waved to you as you passed by. But, the transition to the simple life’s not so simple for many transplants who come from more contemporary urban cultures. I see so many people who move to Blue Ridge from more modern settings struggle with the cultural differences they encounter once theyt live here. The very things that first attract folks to the area, later appear to be obstacles to be overcome. … (2 comments)

blue ridge georgia: REPAZ ON MAIN - 02/19/09 01:23 PM
I never cease to marvel at the talented array of people who are drawn to our little hometown community of Blue Ridge Georgia. Take, for instance, Ann Blonder, the owner of one of downtown Blue Ridge’s premier dining facilities, REPAZ ON MAIN.   Originally from Buckhead, Ann owned a home on Lake Blue Ridge for years before she finally opened REPAZ, at the urging of her children. After years of watching their mother host events and cook amazing meals, it seemed to them the logical next step. In fact, it was the names of her 3 children, REbecca, PAige & Zachary, … (1 comments)

blue ridge georgia: KIDDING AROUND - 02/15/09 04:17 PM
My wife, Ginny, and I ran our own business for 20 years, side-by-side. We were fortunate enough to come to the same conclusion at the same time, that we were done with the frantic pace and endless hours of running our own business, and we were both ready to make a midlife move. We sold “the farm”, or rather we “bought the farm”, and started a new life here in Blue Ridge, Georgia, on 50 beautiful acres. A big part of the decision was our concern that our children were growing up so fast, and if we didn’t do something to … (0 comments)

blue ridge georgia: STILL GREEN BEHIND THE EARS - 02/12/09 02:01 PM
What a whirlwind. I got home at 2:30 in the morning from our Green Designation course, and got back up bright and early to hit the office to catch up on what I’ve missed. I haven’t really had time to process all I learned in the past 2 days, but I am energized like a solar battery on a sunny day over all the concepts and information I learned from our seminar. For one thing, I sell property in a beautiful mountain community that is up in arms about the uncontrolled growth we are experiencing. Several other communities in this area … (6 comments)
