mark hendry: Reflections of a Father's Day - 06/23/09 04:18 PM
I wish every Dad the type of Father’s Day I had this past weekend. I really needed a day like that. A brief, but cherished day in the life where my children took the time and expressed their love for “their Dad”. A man cannot help but realize that despite being a mere mortal like everyone else, his children manage to see him as iconic; a role model for their life expectations. It reminds me how important it is to lead by example.   What touched me the most is that I realized my children inherited a great gift from me…one … (8 comments)

mark hendry: COUNTRY'S NOT SO FAR FROM THE CITY - 06/08/09 10:53 AM
One of the things I absolutely love about living in Blue Ridge Georgia is that even though we are far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern world in many ways, in just over an hour, we can be in one of the largest cities in the United States: Atlanta. Yesterday, we took the whole family to see “The Jersey Boys” a Broadway musical at the fabulous Fox Theater. This is not a review of the show, though it was fantastic…I’d recommend it to anyone, especially if you know anyone from Jersey. It’s just so great to be able … (4 comments)

mark hendry: UPS & DOWNS IN TODAY'SĀ MARKETPLACE - 05/22/09 11:40 AM
I have good news and bad news. First, the good news; the Real Estate business is activity; the bad news is ACTIVTY DOESN’T ALWAYS = CONTRACTS. My phone is ringing off the hook with leads, listings and showings; even Buyers, but noone seems in a hurry to make a move. There’s more bad news. All this activity keeps me busy, but I have no time left to Blog. I feared this would happen, and I hear it all the time. Blogs bring success…success leaves little time to Blog. I am just taking some time tonight to report that although my blogging … (2 comments)

mark hendry: PROM TIME - 05/09/09 04:30 PM
Today, I got my son ready for his first Prom. It's a little different than when I helped my daughter get ready for her first prom. In both cases, my lovely wife was Missing In Action; off at a writer's convention both times, which shows how long she's been writing, and how old I'm getting.
I can remember when I helped my daughter 5 years ago, I was in the middle of splattering 20 dancers in white unitards with several colors of dye, and then hosing each one down, in order to color the costumes, when my "little girl" pulled … (3 comments)

mark hendry: BOWL ME OVER - 04/27/09 02:17 PM
For those that may have read my blog last month, you'll remeber that I sold a large historic homestead in Brasstown, North Carolina. Not only was it a large sale, but the seller was also a dear friend, and a renowned woodturning artist. Many of her works can be seen in galleries from Blue Ridge to Chattanooga. She is best known for the grand size of her bowls, which also command a sizable price. I own one of her small pieces, a silver maple vase, and I cherish it because it is probably the only Oland piece I would ever afford to … (0 comments)

mark hendry: BLOGGING EXERCISE - 04/20/09 02:01 PM
No, it's not your imagination, I've gone MIA (Missing In Action). I'm afraid I've been a bad blogger. You see, I realize that blogging, like my exercise regimen, is something that is easy to get distracted from if I'm not committed and aware.
I had to go out of town for a couple of back to back trips, and got back to find myself backed up at work. Before I knew it, two weeks had flown by, and not only did I stop exercising daily, but my blogging is equally unvisited. Now, after just a couple of weeks, I am encountering … (10 comments)

mark hendry: BLESSINGS OR A CURSE? - 04/06/09 06:06 PM
So it never fails, I leave the office for a 2-day trip, and within hours of getting in the car and hitting the road, I get a call and I find I'm in negotiations for a big involved contract on one of my listings. Then, another deal I have put to bed until closing, opens itself up to some new dilemmas, and I am pulling off the road to the nearest Starbucks so I can get on the wireless network and start my email correspondence with all parties to remedy the situation. Now I swear, If I were in the office, … (8 comments)

mark hendry: I FEEL STIMULATED ALREADY! - 04/03/09 01:26 PM
Great News! If you recall earlier this year, I applauded Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson, who had proposed a $15,000 tax credit as part of February's stimulus package. Of course, during revisions to the package, it got taken out, but that wasn't the end. Today, the U.S. Senate revisited his proposal, and unanimously approved it as an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget Resolution. Isakson clealy believes that, "Our economic crisis started with housing, and our economy will continue to suffer unles we do something now...". His propsal for a nonrefundable federal income tax credit will apply to the purchase of … (7 comments)

mark hendry: ANOTHER SALE DUE TO BLOGGING - 04/01/09 09:30 AM
Today I found out one more way that blogging can result in a real estate sale. I was finishing up my work on Sunday, after pulling a floor duty shift, and decided to knock out a blog post before calling it a day. An hour later, I was just finishing up adding some photos to the post, and at 6p.m. on Sunday night, in walk a young couple. They asked if the office was closed, and I explained, “Yes, but that’s no matter. I’m here. You’re here. That’s all you need.” They could not get over how affordable properties were here, … (4 comments)

mark hendry: GREAT TIMES AT GRI - 03/29/09 06:47 PM
GRI is the acronym for the Graduate Realtor Institute Designation available through the National Association of Realtors. Because I am licensed in North Carolina, in addition to Georgia and Tennessee, I am required to attend 90 hours of post-license continuing education, and that happens to be the # of hours you receive from the 3 weeks of intensive training you recieve by attending GRI. Between that and my belief in continuing education, I decided to take my first 30 hour session this month at the GRI in Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, Georgia.

I really had no idea of what … (5 comments)

mark hendry: START FRESH/SPRING FORWARD - 03/24/09 02:15 PM
I don't know what it is, but there's just something about Spring in the Mountains that rejuvenates my winter weary soul. The dismal colorless winter gives way to the new life and color of Spring in all it's glory. It reminds me of the recent economic seasons we have been experiencing, believe it or not, and I see sign of Spring there, too. In the winter, things seem bleak and desolate. It's harder to get out of bed in the morning and face the cold relentless weather out there. You just want to pull the covers over your head and stay … (17 comments)

mark hendry: SAY "NO" TO RECESSION! - 03/22/09 03:00 PM
Someone sent this link to me in an email. They said it reminded them of me. I clicked on it, and I LOVE IT! It is entitled,
"NO RECESSION FOR ME".
Definitely, CLICK THE IMAGE & check it out. I love the attitude this little info-video takes on staying positive and proactive during a critical time, where the answer is not to give in to the FEAR, but say NO to it, and keep forging ahead, working harder to make a difference (my personal philosophy). It also mentions staying away from overdoses of negativity in the news, which I agree with … (4 comments)

mark hendry: CATCH THE WAVE! - 03/22/09 11:52 AM
If you've ever visited Blue Ridge, Georgia, you've probably been waved to by various members of the local community. There's an old time feel to the Blue Ridge lifestyle that is reminiscent of the days some of us grew up in, before shops stayed open past 7 pm, or opened on Sundays. 10 years ago, there weren't even traffic lights in this sleepy little town. A fun night in Blue Ridge consisted of sitting on your front porch step, watching the sun go down, waving to the neighbors. Now, let me preface this by saying this lifestyle is not for everyone, … (0 comments)

mark hendry: ONE GOOD TURNER DESERVES ANOTHER - 03/17/09 04:26 PM
Lissi Oland is a big part of why I left my old life in the busy city and moved to the mountains in search of a simpler existence. I have retold in other entries how it was during the first time my wife and I visited downtown Blue Ridge that we started thinking about selling our business and moving to the mountains. We were thinking of options for what we might do in this new life. What I didn’t go into was how I set out on the path to study wood working; wood turning to be exact. My wife and … (0 comments)

mark hendry: ALWAYS, LISSI - 03/16/09 05:43 PM
Last week, I was the agent for the biggest real estate sale I have assisted to date. Not only did I manage to sell the home in 3 months, but it had actually been on the market with several other agents for almost 5 years prior, so I should have been proud and down right exuberant, but I wasn’t. It was a bittersweet victory, because the property I managed to sell was that of my dear friend, Lissi Oland. Lissi's property has been for sale as long as I have known her. She has had some interested parties look at it … (5 comments)

mark hendry: REAL BALANCE - 03/14/09 04:38 PM

In these economically challenging times, I find I want to work harder to compensate for the bad news I get on the market. I am a pro-active sort of fellow, and cannot stand being told "things are bad and there's nothing you can do about it." I like to work to change the things in my life I don't like, and to a certain extent, I do. I am busy and the market here in Blue Ridge Georgia is picking up, or at worst, it is at least stablizing, but becasue there are fewer of us still in the business... … (3 comments)

mark hendry: BACK & BEHIND - 03/12/09 09:00 PM
How could I take a mere 1 week off to attend GRI (Graduate Realtor Institute) and come back so behind in my work that I feel like I'll never catch up? I mean I'm back with a clearer mind and highly motivated attitude, thanks to the classes I attended last week, but now I have a renewed sense of everything I need to do to get on top of my business, and I feel at the bottom of a gigantic hill. Before I left I was on top of everything, or so I thought, and now I feel decades behind. How … (5 comments)

mark hendry: THE ART OF BARNS - 02/26/09 11:00 AM
I had a listing call up in Turtletown Tennessee the other day. The house was am amazing prow front log cabin on a private lake with 20 rolling acres and a nice garage workshop.

In addition to getting the listing, I also got an unbelievable amount of barn photos. That, combined with the dusting of snow that stuck in the more northern elevations gave me some great shots.

I love old barns, and a sideline to my Real Estate activities has been photographing interesting old barns I see … (0 comments)

mark hendry: COCKY RESIDENTS - 02/25/09 03:33 PM

Why did the Chicken cross the road? (And how does he know to use the crosswalk?) The answer to this age-old question, and many others can be found in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Not to be too cocky, but Blue Ridge is a town like no other that exists in this day and age, and residents like it that way. Though many city downtown areas are foul, only in Blue Ridge will you find such pride in the downtown area’s “fowl”ness. Sometimes, you just gotta “crow” about what makes you special, silly as it may be. When you visit the Blue … (2 comments)

mark hendry: AND THE WINNER IS...ME!!! - 02/20/09 03:12 PM
Wow, I won my first award in Real Estate today. I didn't even know there were such things, but it makes sense... what with everything having it's own subculture, why not Real Estate. Being relatively new to the business, I had no expectations, which made being an awards recipient all that much more fun. I knew I was nominated, and that alone was a thrill, but I really couldn't imagine my actually winning anything so soon.

My fellow associates were really good at keeping a secret, because apparently, many knew about my getting the Circle of Excellence Award for 2008 … (12 comments)
