hawaii culture: May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii | Hawaii May Day 2011 Events - 04/27/11 12:23 PM
A poet named Don Blanding, wrote an article in the local newspaper in early 1928, throwing out an idea that there might be a holiday that centered around a Hawaiian custom of making and wearing the flower lei. Then, fellow writer Grace Tower Warren came up with the idea of a holiday on May 1 to go along with May Day and she is the one who made up the phrase, "May Day is Lei Day." The first Lei Day was held on May 1, 1928 and they encouraged everyone to wear a lei. There were wonderful programs in downtown Honolulu

hawaii culture: What is YOUR Shangri-La? - 05/06/09 09:41 PM
The Byodo-In Temple at the Valley of the Temple Memorial Park was established on June 7, 1968 to commemorate the first of the Japanese immigrants to Hawaii....and built entirely WITHOUT nails. This temple was constructed as a replica of a temple constructed over 900 years ago in Uji, Japan. The Byodo-In Temple translates "Temple of Equality - not to discriminate". The temple is the home to a golden Buddha Amida and thought to be the largest figure (standing 18 feet) carved since ancient times. We stood at the temple peering up at this tall Buddha. I bowed to show respect

hawaii culture: The Wedding Luncheon Video - 04/01/09 12:13 AM
As you all know, Gerardo and Dori (my daughter) were married on Saturday. You can read about it here>>> A Wonderful Change With A Spring Fresh Future! Well, we just had a small luncheon afterwards at the Old Spaghetti Factory. (I love their food!) Anyway, there is nothing more complete than having a video to show everyone's TRUE COLORS. Listen closely and you'll hear all the remarks going on....like "that's your daugher"....and "why'd you ask how they FEEL" and stuff like that.....quite hilarious. BTW....Gary and I don't drink....and you can tell who is....like ...my mom for one lol! Have fun....and

hawaii culture: Imagine the Possibilities - 02/14/09 11:54 PM
There are just too many words for a stunningly creative pose of an orchid. I continued my quest for orchid blooms and once again found myself at the Kam Swap Meet across from Pearlridge Shopping Center this past Wednesday. Scoping out the isles of wares I frantically eyed each vendor quickly until I found my favorite orchid man. With a large white truck he unloads hundreds of blooming orchids with colors galore! Gazing at this blooming orchid (above) I was immediately entranced by the swirls and curls as if each bloom were waving hello to me. That meant I had to buy it. lol. I wanted a

hawaii culture: I Believe WE All Can Fly - And Touch the Sky - 01/20/09 12:34 PM
With tears streaming down my face I sat with my husband and watched Barack Obama walking through the hall and down the steps to his Inaugural Ceremony. With emotion welling up inside of me for this proud moment of a "Hawaii Home Grown" boy who grew up to be our 44th President of the United States. Nothing is constant in this whole wide world except change. Over the course of my life I have grown in mind, body and spirit with ever changing thinking in my beliefs and values that molded me into the woman I am today. I am watching the same change in our

hawaii culture: Through the Years - Happy Anniversary! - 01/18/09 09:06 PM
Seven years ago today (and after about 13.5 years of being 'single') I married Gary. It has been the most pleasurable trip of our lives. We reminisced today about the courtship days and the travel through these few short years. My time passes by fast when you're having fun! That's how we gage how well our marriage is going. I suppose if it were a yucky one the time would have dragged by realllllll slow. It probabaly helps that we're older and have gone through all the trauma and drama that one goes through in their younger years. One thing is for certain.

hawaii culture: The Winter Surf on the North Shore of Oahu (Picture Perfect) - 11/30/08 11:24 AM
Thought you folks would enjoy a few pictures of the Winter Surf on the North Shore of Oahu as well as see what it's like during the Winter Months here in Hawaii. We started out with blue skies and crisp cool air hitting our faces and enough so that we didn't need the air con in the car. One hour of sunny weather where I could took a shot of our shadows to prove that it REALLY was sunny this November 28th morning. But alas, a few miles down the country

hawaii culture: Alternative Medicine? - 08/20/08 08:16 PM
Have you ever wondered about other 'medical' alternatives than just a regular doctor for something like a thrown out back? And if that didn't work have you considered going to a chiropractor? If that doesn't work, then what? My husband has something pinched in his back /leg and he went to the doctor. He basically got the "I'll give you a prescription" answer and he told them to 'take a hike' (he used other words). Then he went to a Chiropractorand after four weeks of pain, continuing pain and just a bunch of cracks and more pain I told him that

hawaii culture: Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area - Aiea - 08/18/08 09:52 PM
Keaiwa Heiau (an Ancient Hawaiian Temple) is located at the top of Aiea Heights Drive in the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area. Upon entry into the State Park the Keaiwa Heiau is to the left and you will definitely do a double take at first glance. KEAIWA HEIAU is known as the temple with life. It is believed to be where the 'Kahuna' (priest, minister) practiced the art of healing. The gardens right by the temple were compounded and then given to the patient while praying. It is unknown when this Heiau was built but one source says possibly around

hawaii culture: Have You Been Lei'd Today? - 05/01/08 11:29 AM
May 1st of each year is "May Day" in Hawaii. The first May day was held on May 01, 1928 to commemorate a celebration of the making and giving of the lei (flower necklace). A piece of Hawaii Information and Hawaii History: A poet/writer Don Blanding wrote in a local paper of his suggestion to commemorate the celebration of making and giving lei's. He also is credited with throwing the lei overboard the ship....if it returned ...so would you. Fellow Writer Grace Tower Warren came up with the idea of a May first celebration for this very suggestion. She is also

hawaii culture: The Island of Hawaii: Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, The Honu and Akaka Falls - 08/26/07 02:12 PM
Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is located on the southern end of the island in the Ka'u district of the island of Hawaii aka "The Big Island". Black Sand evolves from the ground lava and these black sand beaches are found around the areas where there are still active volcanoes. The black sand actually has the term "black volcanic glass". When the lava flows into the ocean (which it is currently doing) then it chills and the glassy rinds shatter and in turn may form beaches with the tiny grains of black sand. The Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is the easiest to access and is
