hawaii endangered species: Kau'i'la, The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle - 09/16/11 10:30 PM
DID YOU KNOW?   The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle, The HONU (pronounced ho new) is the "Ancient of the Ocean" and survived even the Ice Age.

Hawaiian legends tell a tale of Kau'i'la (cow ih la) who is a mystical sea turtle and a daughter born to two supernatural sea turtles in Hawaii. Kauila watched over the children playing on Punalu'u Beach (her home) on the Big Island (the island of Hawaii). She would sometimes turn herself into a little girl so she could play with the other children on the Black sandy beach. She would frolick in the fresh water pond and … (21 comments)

hawaii endangered species: The Ho'nu and The Ilio’holo’I’ka’uaua - 02/12/11 03:12 PM
First of all, the Honu (pronounced ho new) is the endangered Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle and the Ilio Holo Ka Uaua (pronounced ee lee oh- ho-low-ee-ka- oo-ah-oo-ah)   is the endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal .
On a bright sunny day,  Honu Sally was basking in the sun on Laniakea Beach on the North Shore of Oahu. She came on the beach when she had had enough to eat from the deep blue Pacific Ocean and in need of resting.  She didn't make the mistake of doing things too quickly and got enough rest before heading out again to exercise, eat seaweed … (40 comments)

hawaii endangered species: The Protected & Endangered Hawaiian Goose: The Nene - 11/27/08 12:44 PM

Another endangered species in Hawaii is the Nene (neh neh) or Hawaiian Goose and is amongst the thirty bird species classified as endangered by the Federal and State Governments. The Nene is found ONLY in Hawaii and introduced as the State Bird in 1959 when Hawaii became the 50th state.
Even after 40 years of reintroduction with breeding the Nene in captivity and releasing them into the wild the Nene still struggles to survive mainly due to introduced predators and the loss of feeding habitat.
Following are a few historic points regarding the decline in Nene population:

hawaii endangered species: The Mystery & Beauty of The Waikiki Aquarium - 11/16/08 10:22 PM

With cameras and video in tow we headed down to Waikiki from Central Oahu to the Waikiki Aquarium. Long talked about for something fun to do we hopped in the car after talking about it last night. We did everything we needed to do early this morning so we could have a few hours of pleasure.

It was well worth the half an hour trip and after going from window to window at the Waikiki Aquarium's displays we came upon ......

hawaii endangered species: Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal Spotted on the North Shore of Oahu! - 08/01/08 07:00 PM

Ahhhh...hard to believe that amidst the splashing and laughing and playful antics surrounding Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu that there would be a Hawaiian Monk Seal bathing in the sun. Oblivious to all going on around it, this Endangered Species is taking advantage of a beautiful tropical day to catch a tan (haha) and few winks.
Where the population of the Monk Seal used to be high, it has decreased 11% per year since 1989 and is the MOST endangered marine mammal in the United States. One of the main factors for their decrease in population … (21 comments)

hawaii endangered species: The MURDER of "Honey Girl" - 07/20/08 09:51 PM

"Aloha Honey Girl"
Last September we went cruising along the North Shore of Oahu and took pictures of the Endangered Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles or Honu (ho noo) at Laniakea Beach.
The "Ancients" of the ocean, the sea turtles, have roamed the seas for 200 milliion years and even survived the Ice Age. Six of the seven species are classified endangered or on the verge of extinction.
The Chinese believed that the sea turtle meant "wisdom" while the Hawaiian legend tells of a green sea turtle named Kauila (cow ih la) who watched over the children playing on the beach in … (90 comments)

hawaii endangered species: Sharing a Piece of Paradise.....East Oahu, Hawaii - 07/09/08 01:20 AM

It usually takes about four hours to circle the island by car. Sightseeing and stopping along the way at the many sights around Oahu may take a wee bit longer. :)
There is so much of our rich history and culture to take in that it has taken even me.....a lifetime to grasp.
And I share it with you.......
Kaohikaipu (Ka O HE KA ee Poo) Island (Turtle Island) is right in front of Manana Island (Rabbit Island) off the East Coast of Oahu by Makapu'u Beach. Between the two islands is a coral reef and though divers sometimes explore around … (12 comments)
