hawaiian islands: Help for the Homeless in Hawaii - 01/21/10 12:17 PM
After reading Debi Boucher's post on Homeless In America  I remembered a post I wrote two years ago on ActiveRain:    Oahu's North West Shore: The Homeless Situation.  Homelessness is EVERYWHERE and not just in our country, state or city alone.
This is a follow up on our homeless situation of years past and present here on the island of Oahu.
It's sometimes a choice for those that choose to ‘live off the land' or it may be that one had a situation in their household that brought them to the point of homelessness. With the housing and economic crisis over the last … (40 comments)

hawaiian islands: Historic Haleiwa Town & Ancient Hawaiian Temples-VIDEOS - 05/02/09 10:20 PM
You've walked with me through the Historic Honolulu County Hawaii - Club Chaos Eye Candy post and my pictorial of Historic Sites in Honolulu County. Now you will really see a few sites in video......and be there right beside me....
Historic Haleiwa Town:  In 1898 Benjamin Dillingham (a businessman) opened a hotel on the North Shore of Oahu and named it Haleiwa (Ha le ee va), Hale meaning house and iwa is a frigatebird.  With many preserved old buildings this old town makes for a wonderful destination for tourists.  Anahulu Stream Bridge, also known as Rainbow Bridge is on the north entrance to Haleiwa … (21 comments)

hawaiian islands: We Won! Hawaii is the Second HAPPIEST State! - 03/13/09 02:19 PM

~~~~~~~~
Have you ever heard of a survey for the happiest state? Hawaii is usually left out of a lot of surveys and somehow gets left out as a state quite often.  We're only across the Pacific Ocean and spread out among islands.  Geez. Well, we were not left out this time.....HAWAII is the SECOND HAPPIEST STATE.  Utah came in First.
Well, after hearing this story on our local news two nights ago.... I was....PROUD.
We are the Aloha State (and now the second happiest lol) and our Aloha Spirit is infectious to say the least. We throw leis … (33 comments)
hawaiian islands: Waikiki Beach- Still Going Strong With Surf, Sun and Fun! - 02/10/09 11:33 AM
This is a view of Waikiki Beach on February 8, 2009 at approximately 11:00am. Everyone was either at the Pro Bowl or headed to the last Pro Bowl game at the Aloha Stadium. Yet, with all reports on tourism and visitors numbers going down it sure took on a different life this past Sunday.
Maybe everyone on the beach didn't come for the Pro Bowl? Maybe they just came to soak in the sun? Maybe take advantage of great air fare rates? Hotel rates? Just came to get away from the cold?
Whatever the case may be it was … (28 comments)
hawaiian islands: Winter Views in Honolulu County - 01/10/09 07:10 PM
Winter Views on Oahu, Honolulu County, Hawaii
On January 3rd, 2009 we headed over to my Auntie's condo in Yacht Harbor Towers right off Ala Moana Boulevard in Honolulu, Hawaii. Needless to say, her condo overlooks the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor and Ala Moana Beach and park. Right past the harbor is Magic Island, a small peninsula known for their parks where many have their family gatherings and also watch the fireworks over the ocean on New Years and July 4th. If you look closely...right in the middle of the picture right past the boats are the outrigger canoe paddlers training … (52 comments)
hawaiian islands: Hawaiian Islands Storm Affects EVERYONE - 12/12/08 03:57 PM
The storm that moved into our Hawaiian Islands yesterday affected everyone.
My dog Shadow kept hiding under my desk and trying to paw my arm in hopes I would cradle her in my lap. She was afraid.
Usually, my dog would body bash the security screen door when someone knocked. (Territorial little bugger)
Not this time. The horrendous pounding from the downpour and wind of up to 50mph were enough to scare me as well.
The hour long news special last night showed the devestation. Our island of Oahu (Honolulu County) had up to waist high water in some areas damaging roads (that … (29 comments)
hawaiian islands: What You Didn't Know about the HAWAIIAN ISLANDS - 07/13/08 11:12 PM
Dedicated to Bob Stewart
(who is attending the Hawaii Association of Realtors®  2008 Pacific Rim Conference & Expo on the Island of Hawaii on September 18 & 19th, 2008 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village )
Yes, Hawaii is a State that was admitted into the Union on August 21, 1959 and making it the 50th State. Now, for those that have never even stepped foot in Hawaii.... let's clear up a few things.
First of all, it's widespread near and far that Hawaii is an island paradise. Right? Full of trade winds blowing through your hair and beautiful balmy sunny skies above. We have beautiful beaches and lush green valleys and wonderful hiking … (26 comments)
hawaiian islands: The Island of Hawaii: Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, The Honu and Akaka Falls - 08/26/07 02:12 PM
Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is located on the southern end of the island in the Ka'u district of the island of Hawaii aka "The Big Island".  Black Sand evolves from the ground lava and these black sand beaches are found around the areas where there are still active volcanoes.
The black sand actually has the term "black volcanic glass". When the lava flows into the ocean (which it is currently doing) then it chills and the glassy rinds shatter and in turn may form beaches with the tiny grains of black sand.
The Punalu'u Black Sand Beach is the easiest to access and is … (65 comments)
