pearl harbor hawaii: History of Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii - 06/29/11 03:53 PM
Located smack in the middle of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Ford Island connects by the Ford Island Bridge (Named the Admiral Clarey Bridge) and houses many naval facilities and has military housing as well.

The island was called "Moku  ‘ume ‘ume" (moe koo oo may oo may) and the translation is ‘isle of attraction'.  The island was named after a Boston physician named Dr. Seth Porter Ford (1818 to 1866) who practiced medicine at the Hawaiian Insane Asylum and US Seamen's Hospital  (1861-1866).

pearl harbor hawaii: December 07, 1941 -The Bombing of Pearl Harbor | Memories from My Mother and Her Grandaughters' Discoveries - 12/07/10 05:27 AM
My Japanese ancestry and background as a Hawaii resident (since 1967) is pretty interesting.  My mother was born and raised on the island of Kauai and she was one of 8 siblings born into an ‘arranged' marriage with my grandmother being a "picture bride" and my grandfather being born and raised in Japan.
In 1936 my grandfather passed away from stomach cancer and my grandmother raised the children with my older aunties helping with the younger ones.  After the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, many Japanese were put in the internment camps.
My Mom met my … (18 comments)

pearl harbor hawaii: Pearl Harbor Hawaii |US Navy Bone Yard of Decommissioned Vessels - 08/18/10 01:11 PM
While riding past the U.S. Navy ship "graveyard" located at Middle Loch in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii (the Waipahu side of Pearl Harbor) I wondered how many ships were in this "graveyard". While researching I found out that this Middle Loch U.S. Navy ship "graveyard" is also known as a bone yard.

This Navy "Inactive" ship facility is just one of the three remaining bone yards for decommissioned vessels. This facility has been renamed about four times and is now known as the "Inactive Ships On-Site Maintenance Office".
The following information is of the remaining decommissioned ships in Middle Loch, Pearl … (16 comments)

pearl harbor hawaii: The Moving Golf Ball in the Pacific - 01/21/09 03:26 PM

Would you believe this giant golf ball traveled 4,000 miles around the Pacific Ocean between December of 2007 and April of 2008? Well, it's not really a golf ball like those you're thinking of after the Big Sony Open this last week here at Waialae Country Club.
Up on the H-1 freeway off ramp I saw IT 'back in port' this past Saturday. (Actually, I found out it came back to port on the 3rd) We got off on the Waimalu exit and with excitement of a blogger gone wild wanting to take a picture specifically for this post I order my husband to Blaisdell Park. … (28 comments)

pearl harbor hawaii: The USS Kitty Hawk Arrives in Pearl Harbor Hawaii - 07/02/08 01:28 PM
My son was in the United States Navy and stationed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk air craft carrier based out of Yokosuka, Japan until the summer of 2006.
He was aboard the ship and in the Persian Gulf the day the war was announced on March 19th, 2003 and I, as a mom, was sick to stomach and besides myself with worry. It was his birthday. I didn't hear from my son for a couple of months. READ MORE HERE
He served his ship and his country well, and when the ship pulled into Pearl Harbor yesterday my son was so excited!  He has … (37 comments)
