Beepers, Backpacks and Buyers Agency - 01/18/11 10:00 AM
Cell phones, beepers, backpacks and ball caps are just a few of the gifts from the 1990's. Fitness, once again became a priority and boy bands, the standard. The real estate industry was not overlooked in this generous time of change. It was during the early 1990's that states passed the law creating Buyers Agency. Few subjects have been as passionately debated, vigorously supported, or eloquently defined in our industry. New organizations as well as companies formed around this exciting concept. In many ways it brought about an eternal buyers market. At no other time had buyers been given such a

A Lesser Tanned, Lesser Known Local Hero~ - 01/13/11 09:31 PM
Indecisiveness is not on my impressive list of flaws; however, there are certain circumstances in which I find myself huddled in hesitation, or dancing in doubt. The first cupcake, I can always justify. It is the seventh that has me questioning my judgment. Other than my divine weakness for the sweeter things in life, it is the publication of my thoughts that cause the unusual occurrence of communicative caution. In no other aspect of my life do I hit the send button with both eyes closed. My typical act now, think later motif minimizes in the shadows of interpretation. Obviously, this

A Winter Storm Warning, 3 Peacocks, And A Donkey - 01/09/11 05:26 PM
Almost a year in the making, and now only one day away from the grand opening of Somerset Point. All the planning, designing, discussing, and debating in the world couldn't have prepared me for the last minute obstacles I faced today. It is one thing to have a delivery truck faux pas, missing drapes, missing signs, an unroutable router, and boxes that seem to multiply every time I turn my head; however, Noah's Ark and Mother Nature were two guests I had not included in the Evite. Our design center is almost finished. We have literally been working around the

Lost in Transaction: A Guide for Normal People - 01/07/11 09:43 AM
As in any industry, Realtors have developed their very own language. Any unsuspecting soul who finds themselves surrounded by this particular population my experience a significant amount of confusion. It sounds like English, it resembles normal speech most of the time, but still there is a code that must be broken. In order to merge the masses, encourage communication, and shed some much needed light on the jibber jargon, I created the "Lost in Transaction" list for normal people. Lost in Transaction 1. Listing- listing (n) When used as a noun means something the Realtor better sell, in record time. The Realtor often demonstrates

Mr. Broker-In-Charge, Consider Your Recruiting Strategy! - 01/06/11 08:05 AM
Laugh and the world laughs with you; close transactions and everyone wants to buy you a cup of coffee. Not too long ago I was a newbie (well, 7 years ago). Not only was I a newbie, but to make matters worse, I was new to town also. At the time real estate was booming, and there was no time for coffee much less a few moments to encourage an out of town, fresh out of class, full of hope Realtor. Similar to walking into church late, it seemed everyone already had a seat and no one was budging. I remember

If You're Happy And You Know It!!!! - 01/05/11 07:58 AM
Maybe it stems from my former life as a teacher. Those preschoolers certainly had a way of putting just about all of life's quandaries in perspective. Having a bad morning? Hug someone. Fell and scraped your knee? Band-Aid. Feel like screaming? Scream as loud as possible for 5 minutes. Cured. I remember well how quickly their sniffles, tears, and yes smiles could spread like wildfire through a hay barn. Which leads me to the comparison of the attitudinal atmosphere in the real estate industry. It isn't a far stretch to see the similarities in story time and association meetings. Humor me.

Does This Listing Make Me Look Fat???! - 01/05/11 07:52 AM
I realize the importance of listings. I work hard to attract realistic sellers, however; there is always that one home that makes me wonder...... I believe that in some way the listings we take reflect on us as professionals. Is that crazy? My listings are my inventory, my inventory is my business. I have done the "We should really paint, you may want to declutter, speech" to no avail. This particular property is priced well, yet it lacks the appeal needed to really draw in the buyers. Before signing the listing paperwork, we made a list of things that needed to

Give Yourself A Great Big High Five - 01/01/11 11:23 AM
We did it. Each and every one of us, did it. Some of us did it better, with more panache, more patience, and more persistence. Some of us managed to skid in on two wheels, grasping the wheel and praying to the powers that be to let this ride end. It ended, we really did it. 2011 rises as the ball of 2010 drops. Whether surrounded by friends, strangers, or the comforts of solitude, for a few moments every single soul whispers a sigh of relief combined with a child-like whimsy of the possibilities ahead. Like freshly washed sheets, the first river day of
