active rain: My Multiple Choice Solution to the GPTFS Commenting Question - 07/26/08 07:58 AM
Maureen McCabe talks about it here and here. Teri Lussier, creator of the acronym GPTFS (Great Post Thanks For Sharing) has discussed it here and here. Do an Active Rain Search on "GPTFS" .... or on "Comment Points" ... and you'll find other discussions and opinions, too. What's the issue? Since comments earn AR points, sometimes members leave comments that simply say "Good Idea" or "Thank You" or whatever, without really contributing to the conversation. Some members propose eliminating comment points as a way to eliminate frivolous comments. Teri suggested allowing the blog author to award points to commentors. Here's my solution: At the

active rain: Name, Rank, Member Number - 07/25/08 09:30 PM
My name is Cheryl Johnson My rank in the Great State of California is 8 (as of today at any rate) And my member number is 87 Current rank in the AR system is 87 (again, as of today at any rate) I had no idea what my member rank or number was until today. (Now that I know, maybe I should buy a lottery ticket with these numbers) I didn't know where to look until I read Brad Anderson's post today here http://activerain.com/blogsview/609107/ActiveRain-Hits-1-Members Do you want to find your member number rank? I can't see any other way

active rain: Outside Blogs: One Detail To Check On - 07/03/08 08:01 AM
If you are taking advantage of Actice Rain's "Outside Blogs" feature .... and, if in the past you ever applied fancy formatting to one of your blog posts ... Be sure to check up on how that post appears in the outside blog. The default Outside Blog theme appears to reduce the size of test and images just slightly, but that slight reduction can do funny things to formatted text.

active rain: AR Outside Blog - Nameservers - 06/29/08 12:20 PM
Anybody else (besides Jonathon Washburn, of course http://www.jonwashburn.com/ ) got their DNS nameservers mapped yet to an Active Rain 'Outside Blog" ... ??? Using a domain name I had registered at GoDaddy, I mapped it to the new Active Rain Outside Blog nameservers It's been 48 hours, and so far, no joy I know the rule is to allow up to 72 hours, but I have had domains propagate in as little as 10 minutes. Anybody else try this? Or are there still a few kinks being worked out? I'm gonna repeat his name a few times, maybe he has

active rain: Direct from Twitter Land - 06/15/08 10:05 AM
I know the AR gang is working really hard to get things upgraded and up to snuff. But just in case they don't already know this: People do tend to get a bit crazed when the system funks out on them: I changed the screen shot to protect the innocent. (If you didn't see it, it was an illustration of the normal reaction an Active Rain member has when the system funks out and a carefully thought out post is lost forever.) But, a warning to everyone, its a really good idea to compose your posts in something else, Blogjet, Word,

active rain: How Do You Spell Relief? - 04/15/08 08:23 AM
Try "N A R R O W" (the browser window, that is). While I think all the creative efforts going into Active Rain blog customization are great, in my information-overloaded-world, filled with too-much-sound, too-much-stuff, too-much-to-do, and too-much-in-general, I was finding all the different brightly colored AR blog backgrounds were just simply adding to that feeling of way-too-much. Simple solution? Just move your cursor over to the edge of your browser's window and drag it inward, making the window narrower. As the window narrows, the blog background is no longer visible. Ah, that's better. Feels like turning down the sound on a TV that is

active rain: Open Letter To HouseValues (CC. Active Rain) - 01/24/08 09:23 AM
First of all congratulations to Jon, Matt and the rest of the AR crew. Now that HouseValues is an investor in Active Rain, maybe some HouseValues people are here on board reading blog posts, and if so, I would like to offer them my suggestions. Dear House Values, First of all, make use of Active Rain's blog search. Click Search, type in the word "HouseValues". Take some time to read through the various blog posts, on all pages of the search results. I suppose it's possible that HouseValues management is not aware of how their company is perceived by agents on the street. While I'm

active rain: Active Rain Blog Archive, Early Posts - 11/27/07 06:40 AM
I'm posting this little bit of info that I just discovered, it might save someone else the few minutes of befuddlement I just went through. If you look down at the bottom of your blog page, there is a little "number page - next page" thingie that looks like this. That image is from the bottom of my blog ..... Logically thinking, clicking on the 36 would land you on the very first blog posts I ever wrote. NOT. At some point they evidently scroll out of the "numbered page - next page" system. The only way to see the first posts I wrote on

active rain: Active Rain Blog Search - 10/23/07 07:07 AM
I learned something on Brad Anderson's blog here: Active Rain Settings & SEO Benefits - Very Powerful -- something about finding stuff here on Active Rain. Usually, when I want to search for information here on AR, I go to the bloghome page, and click search, like this: Which gives me a simple search box , like below. I often grumbled about the absence of any "advanced" search features: After reading Brad Anderson's post I learned there is, in fact, an "advanced" search tool. It looks like this (below) and it is found ONLY by going to this URL http://activerain.com/blogs Note to Active Rain designers: Why

active rain: Passing 100K - 10/15/07 07:29 AM
Well, whaddya know? I passed the 100K mark the other day No, the heavens did not open..... Choirs of angels did not sing. Oh well. I think it looks pretty cool, anyway. Hmmmm... how did I do it, you ask? By blogging away when I probably should have been attending to other pressing matters. :-) This whole Web 2.0 is amazing, though, I have learned new stuff, discovered new people, thought about things in new ways. It's been great. Thank you, everyone. See you at 200K.

active rain: Only 10 More Pages To Go - 10/02/07 08:46 PM
Whew!!! I'm down to the last ten pages of content. This is a lot of work! In case you missed earlier posts -- I'm copying all of my tutorials posts on Photography, Photoshop, and Blogging over to http://www.dablogmother.com -- Mainly for safe-keeping/back-up purposes. Once that's done, I'll go back through and add link-backs (to show Google that no duplicate content penalties are in order <s> Then maybe I can get on with the business of writing new tutorials, and answering questions, etc. etc. Not to worry, I will continue posting on AR as always.

active rain: Active Rain vs. Move - 09/27/07 02:28 PM
I'm a nosey busybody. But everyone already knew that. I came across this on Inman's blog "ActiveRain, an online real estate blogging community and social network with about 47,000 members, has filed a lawsuit against property-search giant Move Inc. that seeks millions in damages and alleges that Move broke the law when it backed out of an acquisition plan and launched its own blogging platform." So far, I haven't come across any other information, and of course, I'm curious. I'd like to know more. Any one else know more than the Inman post?

active rain: Just Another Meme - 08/06/07 06:38 AM
Bob Carney tagged me for a meme. "Meme" rhymes with "dream" (sort of), or at least, that is what I think I remember reading in someone's blog somewhere. Here goes: My just completed book meme probably tells you almost everything you might ever want to know about me. <s> Back in the late 1960s, early 1970s I wanted to be a folksinger. Who didn't back then? Earlier this year, I posted a sampling of lyrics I wrote back then on a blogspot blog just for the h*ll of it. I think I disclosed that in an early-version meme earlier this year, so you may already know

active rain: Steal This Bird: One Last Experiment in GIF Transparency - 07/21/07 08:54 AM
This is one last experiment in protecting images with a transparent gif overlay, just to test the theory that for blog posts here on Active Rain, the easiest work flow goes like this: 1. Compose the entire post first in WYSIWYG 2. Upload all the images for the post just like you normally would 3. Upload the transparent gif (unless you already have the URL for a previous upload) 4. Post as Draft, change to HTML 5. Edit the image code to add the transparent gifs. I found it easier to keep Notepad open, copy the original code in Notepad, edit it, then paste it back into the

active rain: The Long Arm of Active Rain - 07/21/07 07:44 AM
As most folks know, I am an active observer of, if not an active participant in, local politics and causes in Northeast Los Angeles. Recently, the establishment of an HPOZ (Historic Preservation Overlay Zone) for Garzanva (a small community in the general HIghland Park area) has been a "hot topic". Here are some posts by various contributors on my NelaLive blog: http://www.nelalive.net/2007/06/act-now-protect.html http://www.nelalive.net/2007/06/act-now-prote-1.html http://www.nelalive.net/2007/07/by-request-spec.html http://www.nelalive.net/2007/07/a-new-post-from.html Anyway ... yesterday I received an email from a Los Angeles City Planner, looking for more information to complete the city's final report. Did this planner contact me off NelaLive? No. The contact came through as an Active Rain contact. Now, to me, that's really interesting,

active rain: Transparency Experiment - Step-by-Step - 07/20/07 08:38 PM
Yesterday, Elaine Reese talked about an article on Nick Jarman.com that described a way to protect online images from theft. The basic technique is to use the original image as "background" and cover it with a transparent gif. If someone attempts to right-click and save (steal) the final image, all they will get is the transparent blank image. Elaine asked if this could be done on Active Rain, and I volunteered to experiment with it. I am pleased to report, Yes, it can be done on Active Rain. Here's how step-by-step: 1. First steal <s> the transparent gif at the end of this post. Right

active rain: Figuring Out FaceBook - 06/18/07 05:52 AM
Last week I joined Facebook, just like many other AR members. It wasn't long before my News Feed and Mini-Feed were filled with notices of stuff posted by my friends. And other than "My Wall" I couldn't see how the heck to post anything. For example, it seems you can't post and share links without a "Posted Items" module, and your "Posted Items" module does not appear until after you have posted something. Just in case any others here are as befuddled as I was, here's the deal: Start by posting a listing, (that's always a good place to start for a real
