css: WordPress Thesis Theme: A Little Sidebar Styling - 02/03/10 08:35 PM
Want to style the sidebar of your WordPress Thesis Theme and learn a little CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) in the process?
Copy this little snippet of CSS code and paste it into  the custom.css file of your Thesis themes installation (wp-content/themes/thesis_16/custom/custom.css)
.custom li.widget ul li{background:#F0F0F0;border: 0.1em solid #C7C7C7;-moz-border-radius:4px;padding:0.5em;font-weight: bold;margin:0.5em;}
.sidebar h3 {font-weight: bold;}
This little snippet will make the sidebar links in the Thesis Theme look like this:

OK.  Suppose you wanted the links to have a different background color... Change the color hex code in this line  background:#F0F0F0;
For example, change that line to read background:#FF00FF;
That will give the … (8 comments)

css: Simple Explanation of CSS - 06/23/08 05:55 AM
Over on Rilla's* blog, a commenter asked about Style Sheets, and I thought I would repeat it here:
A Cascading Style Sheet is a set of instuctions for a web page.  The "CSS" tells the web page to "make the background blue" or "make the header font size 24 points".
The CSS code can be written as a block in the header of a web page, or it can be a separate page linked to the web page.
Orginially, styling instructions were just simply embedded in the web page itself, but as web desgin became more and more complex, the idea … (13 comments)

css: Checking Out Active Rain CSS Style Sheets - 06/22/08 02:22 PM
Now that I have an Active Rain virtual helper, I can figure out all kinds of stuff without too much disruption (disruption to blogging, that is, other stuff I need to do is on hold.  :-)  )
Want to check out someone's Active Rain CSS style sheet?
Click View -> View Source (or Page Source in Firefox)
Look for a line near the top of the code that looks sorta like this:
<link href="/stylesheets/cache/default.css?1214102933" media="screen" rel="Stylesheet"
Select and copy this part of the line: /stylesheets/cache/default.css?1214102933
Then up at the Web address bar in your browser, type http://www.activerain.com  then paste in the code … (2 comments)

css: TypePad Custom CSS: A Revelation - 06/18/08 08:07 AM
You know you're screwed when you Google for an answer on something, and all that comes up is stuff you yourself already wrote on the topic.
Don't laugh.  This actually happened to me yesterday.
I've written a lot of "how-to" posts here on AR about using both the  WordPress and Typepad  blogging platforms.  For safe-keeping, I republished many of the posts on http://www.dablogmother.com
Anyone who has read my posts regularly knows  my primary motivation isn't really sharing the knowledge, (although that's very fortunate side benefit) it's making some notes for myself so the next time I need to do the … (11 comments)

css: Top Right Bottom Left - 06/14/08 06:33 AM
Top Right Bottom Left
Huh?  Right now I am using Active Rain as my personal notebook.  (And you're looking over my shoulder)
Top Right Bottom Left is the sequence for setting the amount of padding around an element in CSS.  I always had trouble remembering what order to put the positions in.  Then I finally saw it.  Oh. clock-wise.  Starting at high noon (12:00)
Where would I need to use a padding command?
Suppose I was setting up a new blog in TypePad.
I'm working in Custom Themes.

Under General Page Settings, I have a "Fluid" width main column, and … (6 comments)

Caution: CAT BLOG AHEAD

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
