friday classics: Friday Classics: Let's Twist (And Shout) Again - 02/22/08 07:13 AM
Hey ... I remember this dance!

Maybe if I twisted with Chubby every day, I'd be a little less "chubby" myself .... ya think?
Or I could always twist with John, Paul, George and Ringo; (This one takes a moment to load. Be patient).

friday classics: Friday Classics: I Can See Clearly Now - 02/08/08 07:05 AM
I've been up to my ears in a couple of different projects ... but Fridays Classics  can't be denied  :-)
This is for all of Southern California now that the rain storms have passed...

friday classics: Friday Classics - 02/01/08 06:12 AM
Some people get "earworms".  But more often than not I find myself chasing a musical butterfly.
You know how that goes:  You suddenly remember a few lyrics from a song you heard years ago.  The melody flutters through your mind like a butterfly, and if you don't manage to capture it right then, it is gone.... and you wonder "what was that song?"
This song fluttered by a month or month ago, I didn't manage to capture it then, and it was gone.
Luckily, it fluttered back by a few days ago, and I caught it this time.
Here's the trick:  Google the … (3 comments)

friday classics: Friday Classics: Don't Worry, Be Happy - 01/25/08 06:10 AM
My post yesterday Open Letter To HouseValues (CC. Active Rain) stirred up quite a bit of discussion, and I'm glad it did.
I think AR members need a chance to express their questions and concerns.  As Rich Jacobson pointed out, members have "vested a considerable amount of time and content", even though we do not have a monetary investment in the community.  In some part, our investment of our time and content is what created AR's monetary value.
However, that said, my tip of the day is found in the lyrics to this song:

friday classics: Friday Classics - 01/18/08 05:57 AM
One of my favorite title insurance sales reps retired this month.
She stood head and shoulders above the rest because, while she never once tried to sell herself to me, she was always ready to pitch in and lend a hand.  And in my particular market, lending a hand most often means RESEARCH.  Tracking down records of 50 year old building permits, tracking down address for officers of a defunct corporation, tracking down court records of an elder abuse hearing.
Now that she is out of the field, new reps are beginning to circle ....
Which leads me to my classic for today: Jimmy … (4 comments)

friday classics: Friday Classics: City of New Orleans - 01/11/08 06:19 AM
I started out looking for a video of Arlo Guthrie covering this song.  Still haven't come across one.
But I found I like this version a whole lot anyway:  It's by Willie Nelson and the Highwaymen....

friday classics: Friday Classics: Bruce Springsteen - This Little Light Of Mine - 01/04/08 05:50 AM
How's this to start the New Year on an upbeat note... Bruce Springsteen and The Seeger Sessions Band performing This Little Light Of Mine....

I'm not a religious person, but I think you could probably do worse than adopting the song's chorus as a New Year's Resolution.

friday classics: Friday Classics: Ring In The New Year - 12/28/07 06:22 AM
"Auld Lang Syne,"  is traditionally sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year.
Here's a little of the song's history http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne
And the complete lyrcis along with a translation into modern day english: http://www.newyearfavors.com/new-years-eve-song.html
While browsing YouTube, I fell in love with this version of Auld Lang Syne played as a background to scenes from the 1940 movie Waterloo Bridge.

friday classics: Friday Classics: Goodbye Marie - 12/14/07 05:55 AM
This song, a hit on country charts for Bobby Goldsboro in 1982, may not have a lot of redeeming social virtue.  But I do have a fond memory of driving down the Long Beach freeway in my red 77 Ford Pinto with Goodbye Marie on the radio; me singing along, young (younger, anyway) penniless, and carefree.
Warning:  This is Country style stuff....

friday classics: Friday Classics: The Simon Sisters - 12/07/07 06:45 AM
I've come across a few Carly Simon fans here on Active Rain. I love Carly, too. Did you know Carly Simon started her musical career in a folk duo, the Simon Sisters, with her sister Lucy?
Here is a video of the Simon Sisters from the 1960s performing Turn, Turn, Turn. Pay attention to the harmony, the way their voices weave in and out. It is truly beautiful.

friday classics: Friday Classics: Hi-De-Ho - 11/30/07 06:50 AM
Over at BloodhoundBlog, a conference, BloodhoundBlog Unchained,  is taking shape.
One interesting conversation revolves around a "theme song" for the event.
Here's a theme song idea from Teri Lussier.  The song is Won't Get Fooled Again ,,,, and  here's a link to the lyrics for boomer suffering from Rock-Ear Syndrome.
Here's Greg's Swann's original theme song idea.  The song is I Won't Back Down ,,,, here are the lyrics.
In my usual wandering-stream-of-consciousness style, listening to I Won't Back Down made me think of Hi-De-Ho.
Interesting contrast.  In I Won't Back Down, the singer stands at "the gates of hell" and declares he "won't back down".  In … (2 comments)

friday classics: Friday Classics: If I Had A Hammer - 11/23/07 06:12 AM
What the world needs now is some classic early 1960s vintage Folk Music.  Go ahead and sing along:

Here is a link to the lyrics and a little of the amazing history of this song:

When Pete Seeger first wrote the lyrics, they were considered "radical" and the song didn't become popular until Peter, Paul and Mary revived it several years later.

friday classics: Friday Classics: Louie Louie - 11/16/07 07:00 AM

"Louie Louie" has become a standard in pop and rock, performed by high school marching bands, rock bands, punk bands, you name it.
"Louie Louie" was originally written by Richard Berry in 1955 as a calypso-style ballad, that told in simple verse-chorus form, the story of a Jamaican sailor returning to the island to see his lady. The singer brags of his "fine little girl" to Louie, presumably a bartender.
A jubilant rock and roll version, with little trace of the song's calypso origins, was recorded in 1963 by The Kingsmen and became a national and international hit.
The Kingsmen's lyrics were widely … (6 comments)

friday classics: Friday Classics - November 9 - 11/09/07 05:59 AM
Back in June, Teri Lussier wrote how she loved Show Tunes.  I  completely agreed.  Gee, that seems like such a long time ago!
There's nothing like a catchy, upbeat Show Tune to make you want to stand up, lift up your arms, and just belt it out.
Here's one in that category, Consider Yourself from Oliver!  I dare you to watch this video through and not go around humming it for the rest of the day.
Dedicated to All Active Rain Members .....
UPDATE: I'm taking Missy Caulk's suggestion and adding this to the Active Rain Newbies Group. New people, consider yourselves our friends! … (4 comments)

friday classics: Friday Classics: That Was Then, This Is Now - 11/02/07 07:12 AM
Further explorations into "That Was Then, This is Now"
Consider this.  Here is a video fo Eric Burdon performing "Bring It On Home" in 1965, probably on the Ed Sullivan Show.  (Lordy, it should have been illegal for a kid that young to sing the blues.)

Here is a video of Eric Burdon performing "Bring It On Home" in 2006.

What has changed ... besides the newer video being in color?  It seems to me that they are having a lot more fun in 2006.  The feeling of joy and celebration is contagious.

friday classics: Friday Classics: That Was Then, This Is Now - 10/26/07 01:51 PM
Last week, I posted a video of Springsteen in the 1980s and there were some interesting comments about how much we have all changed in 20 years.
Well, let's consider this (hang in a minute while the videos load):
Here is Joe Cocker performing "A Little Help From My Friends" in 1969.  He's young, he's lean, he's intense.  In fact, he's so deep into the groove you might be concerned that he suffers from a physical affliction (Check out Leon Russell playing guitar, too). .

This is now -- This is Joe Cocker in 2002 performing the same song.  The hairline … (5 comments)

friday classics: Friday Classics - 10/19/07 06:24 AM
A while back, a longtime friend mentioned how much he enjoyed browsing through YouTube looking for different performances of his favorite music.
Well, I started doing it, too.  And it is fun.... and sometimes as you listen to different songs from the past, you think about what was going on in your life at that time ....
Last week, I kicked off "Friday Classics" over at http://www.dablogmother.com  .... and if no one has any objections, I think I'll share some of my classics here, too.
This week:  An exhilarating 1985 performance of Springteen's "Darlington County"

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
