localism: A Bit More On New New Localism - 08/20/08 09:39 PM
Some people wrote short descriptions for their sponsored communities, some wrote long, some inserted multiple images .... no matter, the description box needed to be a uniform size .....
So if you added a bunch of images, or wrote a lengthy  description, your community description will display with a little "read more" plus sign in the upper right hand corner. like this:

Of course, I didn't notice that little plus sign at first, and just spent about 30 minutes trying to fix a description that wasn't broken.  :-)

localism: Localism Sponsored Community Descriptions: The Easy Way. - 08/16/08 08:24 PM
On my post here:  http://activerain.com/blogsview/644202/Localism-Community-Descriptions,  Pam Dent asked about placing images in a sponsored community description.
I answered I did it the Old School Way, with an HTML <img src> tag.
And then,,,,, the heavens opened, and the moment of epiphany came....
To create your sponsored community description with images, just simply write it as a blog post here on Active Rain.  Insert images with the image tool the way you are familiar with....
Then save the post as a "Draft", like this:  In the "Visibility" drop down menu, choose "Draft", then click "Post Blog Entry"

Then click on the HTML … (23 comments)

localism: Localism Community Descriptions - 08/16/08 06:09 AM
Has anyone else put off writing up your Localism community descriptions?
I kept thinking, "Oh, the description editor tool will be difficult and wonky".  "Oh, it probably won't allow me to make edits".  Wrong.
The editor tool is prefectly OK.  The text can be edited, and re-edited, and re-edited again.
In case anyone else has been putting it off, here's a quick walk through:
Go to Localism.
Click My Account.

Click "Write a region description", or if you've already uploaded the description and want to make changes, click "Update region description"

It's probably easier to write your description … (11 comments)

localism: Localism Introduction - 07/13/08 02:04 PM
I like C's words in a comment best:  "You are about to embark on a huge great breaking adventure"   I also like the way C compared writing posts for Localism to writing articles for Wikipedia.  Great metaphor!  "wiki-pedia"  ... and Localism's logo:   "neighbor-pedia"
I've combined a list of links to help people get their minds around Localism ... at least to the extent I've got my mind around it.
Start by looking at your personal Localism page.  You find it by going to http://www.localism.com/agents/YOUR AR USERNAME
For example, my localism page is http://www.localism.com/agents/cheryljns
Then go to the Home page of Localism, … (28 comments)

localism: Are You Pro-Button or Anti-Button? - 07/13/08 07:20 AM
There has been a good deal of discussion about "Call to Action" buttons at the bottom of blog posts being unwelcome on Localism.
And for the record:  I am Anti-Button.  Why?
Localism is a group blog:  The blog posts, authored by many different contributing writers, all display in a single main content column, by date and time posted.
Imagine each author using a different style Call to Action button.
Suzi's are big red rectangles, centered;  Jeff's are beveled green ovals; Mary's are cartoon icons; Tom's are big gold squares across the bottom of the entire content column.
Imagine all of these authors posts appearing on … (25 comments)

localism: Localism Audios - 07/11/08 06:55 AM
Localism Audios
So fair, I am aware of two different radio interviews with Localism's creators .....
Brian Brady's here:  http://activerain.com/blogsview/587686/Localism-com-Explained-On
Real Estate Radio here: http://www.realestateradiousa.com/blog/2008/07/10/real-estate-radio-usa-episode-153/
Are there any others?  If you know of any other, please add a link... Maybe we can compile a list of these all in one place.

localism: One of those Internet Explorer Buglets - 07/10/08 01:50 PM
Here's one of those annoying little Internet Explorer buglets,  I'm just pointing out so the Localism team can add it to the end of their to-do list.
My personal Localism page, when viewed in Firefox looks just fine:

In Internet Explorer 7, the agent name (in light blue) slides part way up under the banner:

I'm not complaining .... just trying to be helpful  :-)

localism: Localism Tip - 07/10/08 08:51 AM
Just in case anyone is not aware,  and it took me a while to figure it out !!! Here is how you reach your personal Localism page:
The formula is:  localism.com - slash - agents - slash - your AR username
I am here:
http://www.localism.com/agents/cheryljns
All your posts will show on your personal page, but to appear on the dashboard or the top neighbor spot, they must be "approved"  ... have I got that right, Rich?

localism: Steal This Bird: One Last Experiment in GIF Transparency - 07/21/07 08:54 AM
This is one last experiment in protecting images with a transparent gif overlay, just to test the theory that for blog posts here on Active Rain, the easiest work flow  goes like this:
1.  Compose the entire post first in WYSIWYG
2.  Upload all the images for the post just like you normally would
3.  Upload the transparent gif (unless you already have the URL for a previous upload)
4.  Post as Draft, change to HTML
5.  Edit the image code to add the transparent gifs. I found it easier to keep Notepad open, copy the original code in Notepad, edit it, then paste it back into the … (18 comments)

localism: Transparency Experiment - Step-by-Step - 07/20/07 08:38 PM
Yesterday, Elaine Reese talked about an article on Nick Jarman.com that described a way to protect online images from theft.
The basic technique is to use the original image as "background" and cover it with a transparent gif. If someone attempts to right-click and save (steal) the final image, all they will get is the transparent blank image.
Elaine asked if this could be done on Active Rain, and I volunteered to experiment with it.
I am pleased to report, Yes, it can be done on Active Rain.
Here's how step-by-step:
1.  First steal <s> the transparent gif at the end of this post.  Right … (7 comments)

localism: Group Blog Dynamics - 01/17/07 06:18 AM
This discussion grew as an off-shoot of my blog post Active Rain, Localism, and The New Economy  (Members Only)  As promised, with Solomon-like skill, I have divided up a two-headed conversation:
Ardell first opened up this topic on Rain City Guide
To summarize (And if I get it all wrong, Ardell will jump in anyway :-> )
Suppose Ardell writes a great post aimed towards first time buyers discussing, let's say, asking the sellers to pay buyer's closing costs.
OK.  For whatever reason, I don't agree with something in her post, maybe things are just simply different in my region.  So I write I … (9 comments)

Caution: CAT BLOG AHEAD

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
