nela: People of Northeast Los Angeles: Charles Fletcher Lummis - 07/11/08 08:53 PM
Journalist, poet, traveler, outdoorsman, newspaper and magazine editor, historian, archaeologist, folklorist, photographer, American Indian rights activist, librarian, preservationist, museum founder, and prodigious lover of dozens of women, Charles Fletcher Lummis is celebrated as one of Northeast L.A.'s most colorful founding fathers.
In 1884, at the age of 25, Charles Fletcher Lummis was working for a newspaper in Cincinnati when he was offered a job with the Los Angeles Times.
Lummis decided to make the 3,507 mile journey from Cincinnati to Los Angeles on foot.  He set out from Cincinnati in September wearing knickerbockers and a duck coat.  The journey took 143 … (0 comments)

nela: Eagle Rock Branch Library - 08/10/07 07:10 AM
I've mentioned before how much I love the old  Eagle Rock Branch library.  I mentioned the pictures in my mind of the way books were arranged on the low shelves in the children's section, the light streaming in through the high windows. The library was closed in 1971 due to earthquake damage, however, thanks to the dedicated efforts of preservationists and community members, the building was saved and renovated and reopened in 1997 as the Eagle Rock Community Cultural Center.
Last night, I had the pleasure of visiting the old library building for an Eagle Rock Music Festival sponsor party, and I wanted to … (3 comments)

nela: The Long Arm of Active Rain - 07/21/07 07:44 AM
As most folks know, I am an active observer of, if not an active participant in, local politics and causes in Northeast Los Angeles.
Recently, the establishment of an HPOZ (Historic Preservation Overlay Zone) for Garzanva (a small community in the general HIghland Park area) has been a "hot topic".
Here are some posts by various contributors on my NelaLive blog:

Anyway ... yesterday I received an email from a Los Angeles City Planner, looking for more information  to complete the city's final report.
Did this planner contact me off NelaLive?  No.  The contact came through as an Active Rain contact.
Now, to me, that's really interesting, … (0 comments)

nela: Lummis Day 2007 - 06/07/07 05:28 AM
Over 3,500 people took part in events at Sycamore Grove Park and Lummis Home on Sunday, June 3 as the second annual Lummis Day easily doubled the celebration's 2006 inaugural attendance.

Sunday morning's opening Poetry Reception was standing-room-only, with hundreds turning out to hear poets reading their work at the historic Lummis Home.
At Sycamore Grove Park, a wildly eclectic line-up of performances presented a rapidly-paced smorgasbord of entertainment and cultural attractions with broad appeal. At 3:00 pm, Los Angeles Fire Department estimated peak attendance at 2,500. Many Festival-goers arrived later for late-afternoon music performances, puppet shows and Mexican, Filipino … (2 comments)

If you drive along Monte Vista Street, as it curves into Marmion Way at the base of Mount Washington, take a moment to glance up towards the West.  Yes, that is a teepee.
The teepee's owner is Shauna Turner, a registered native American Indian.  Shauna's goal is to create an inner City American Indian Sanctuary here.

nela: Passionate About Parakeets - 03/25/07 08:51 AM
Northeast Los Angeles is home to several flocks of Wild Parakeets.  That's right, they're Not Parrots, They're Parakeets.
Whatever the name, they are delightful.  They thrive in the palms and seed-bearing trees of Northeast Los Angeles.  They squawk and squabble and clown around.  They're social and loud and sometimes obnoxious.  What's not to love?
They have been one of my favorite Photography subjects for the last few years.
Here are a couple of my photo galleries:

nela: NELA: Old Station #11 - 01/09/07 07:24 AM

The Northeast Police Station - Old Station #11 - is a Renaissance Revival style building, constructed in 1925.  LAPD vacated the building in 1983, moving to larger quarters, and the building was subsequently ravaged by vandals, arson fires and water damage.  Recognition as an Historic-Cultural Monument in 1984 saved the station from the wrecking ball.

nela: A Very Brief History of Eagle Rock - 01/06/07 07:58 AM
It is believed that early day Native American Tongva living in the area and coming upon this distinctive sandstone rock formation, very fittingly bestowed the title of the "Eagle Rock," which in actual fact does bear a striking resemblance to the head and wings of an eagle in flight. The Eagle Rock is a huge "conglomerate" or "puddingstone". Twelve million years ago there were hot springs just north of the rock. Lime from the springs cemented thousands of field stones and boulders together to form this one great rock. Near the top of the rock, erosion has formed an overhang which … (0 comments)

nela: A Very Brief History Of Highland Park - 01/06/07 06:32 AM
In 1781, the City of Los Angeles, known then as the Pueblo de la Reina de la Margen Del Rio de la Porciuncula, was founded and incorporated by Spain. Around this time, in 1784, Jose Maria Verdugo, a retired military soldier and rancher was granted 36,000 acres of land which he named "Rancho San Raphael". He built a small pueblo, using the balance for cattle raising.
Almost 100 years later, part of this Rancho would become the community of Highland Park. Alfred B. Chapman, an attorney, and his partner Andrew Glassell purchased 32,500 acres of this land in 1869 (approximately 50.7 square … (0 comments)

nela: A Very Brief History Of Mount Washington - 01/06/07 06:24 AM
It is said that Mount Washington was named for Colonel Henry Washington, who came to Southern California in 1855 to survey the state's base lines. He spent a great deal of time in Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties, and is credited with  surveying the Los Angeles River.
Originally a part of the huge, sprawling Rancho San Rafael, the area was only sparcely settled owing to its initial lack of accessability. Panoramic views were not a consideration in those days, and often only the bases of the hillsides were dotted with residences.
A school was built, however, in 1906, near the top … (2 comments)

nela: What WAZ I Thinking? - 12/02/06 06:09 AM
One of our agents (Agent C) is holding an Open House today, Saturday December 2, from 12:00 to 3:00 at this sweet  little house (Yeah, "sweet" is a cliche, but it's also true in this case.)
So what's the problem?  1:30 today is the showdown game between USC and UCLA at the Rose Bowl.  Somehow, I had got it into my old gray head that the game started at 5:00 PM.  OOPS.
Oh well, I'll try to talk Agent C into at least taking along a radio tuned to 710AM  (or 570AM) ... And we'll just figure if anyone in L.A.  is out on the street … (8 comments)

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.
