typepad: Using Larger Images in TYPEPAD - 09/27/08 07:41 AM
TypePad users:
Have you ever inserted an image in a blog post

Only to find that when you view the post, the image is much smaller than you intended??

And no matter what you do to resize the image, it stays too small?

Here's why:
TypePad's default stylesheet contains an image class style command, called "image-full" that re-sizes the displayed image in the blog post.
To change this, from the Edit Post window, click on the HTML tag.

Find the image tag, and look for the part of the image tag that reads class="image-full"

typepad: TypePad Layouts: Fluid Width Column - 07/24/08 07:09 AM
Here's how to set a "fluid" width column in the TypePad blogging platform as mentioned here
Sign in to your TypePad Pro account.
Click the Weblogs tab.

From the list of your blogs (you can have multiple blogs with a TypePad Pro account), select the blog you want to work on, and click Design.

At the Design screen, click Change Layout.

For this example, I'm choosing 3 Columns Right, under the list of Classic layouts, click Save Changes.

Clicking Save Changes takes you back to the Design screen.  Now click Change Theme.

typepad: TypePad Layouts - 07/20/08 08:22 AM
TypePad Pro offers five Classic Layouts with their pro level blogging platform

Why do you care?  Because if you plan to customize the appearance of your blog using the "Custom CSS" feature, you need to know the proper name of each layout in order to apply styling to it.....
So, with that in mind, there are the layout names in the same order as pictured above:
.layout-two-column-left
.layout-two-column-right
.layout-three-column
.layout-three-column-right
.layout-one-column
How would you put this to use?  Let's say you are using the 3 Column Right layout, with a fluid width** main content  column.  That widens the entire blog so … (12 comments)

typepad: TypePad: How To Display Author Bylines - 07/14/08 06:38 AM
A comment was left on one of my TypePad how-to posts with this question:
We would like to be able to differentiate between my posts and hers, but currently, typepad doesn't display any "posted by..." byline at the bottom of the page.
Here's where to set the Author Byline with a TypePad Pro account.
After signing in, click the Weblogs tab

In the list of your blogs, find the blog you want to work with, and click the configure link

Click the Design tab

Under the Post Footer section, click configure

typepad: TypePad Custom CSS: A Revelation - 06/18/08 08:07 AM
You know you're screwed when you Google for an answer on something, and all that comes up is stuff you yourself already wrote on the topic.
Don't laugh.  This actually happened to me yesterday.
I've written a lot of "how-to" posts here on AR about using both the  WordPress and Typepad  blogging platforms.  For safe-keeping, I republished many of the posts on http://www.dablogmother.com
Anyone who has read my posts regularly knows  my primary motivation isn't really sharing the knowledge, (although that's very fortunate side benefit) it's making some notes for myself so the next time I need to do the … (11 comments)

typepad: Top Right Bottom Left - 06/14/08 06:33 AM
Top Right Bottom Left
Huh?  Right now I am using Active Rain as my personal notebook.  (And you're looking over my shoulder)
Top Right Bottom Left is the sequence for setting the amount of padding around an element in CSS.  I always had trouble remembering what order to put the positions in.  Then I finally saw it.  Oh. clock-wise.  Starting at high noon (12:00)
Where would I need to use a padding command?
Suppose I was setting up a new blog in TypePad.
I'm working in Custom Themes.

Under General Page Settings, I have a "Fluid" width main column, and … (6 comments)

typepad: Designing A Custom TypePad Theme - 04/21/08 08:43 AM
To download  a printable, PDF of this post, click here
A week or so ago, I posted about Modifying A WordPress Theme to accommodate the extra width needed to post a VFlyer.
Then in a conversation here, I mentioned how much easier it would be to accomplish the same thing in TypePad.
I thought I'd demonstrate just how easy.  People who are new to TypePad can follow along, TypePad regulars can go take a coffee break.  :-)
This post is going to be dreadfully long, because I've included lots of screen shots, and tried to break the process down into the tiniest baby steps.
First, you need the … (4 comments)

typepad: TypePad: Remember The Publicize Tab - 04/19/08 03:02 PM
As most of you know, I run a few different blogs,  some with WordPress.org, and some with TypePad.  I just had one of those "Duhhhh..." Moments with one of the newer blogs on TypePad.
I was tweaking stuff, and in the process, I happened to look at the source code and saw this:
<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" />
Huh?????  I certainly wouldn't intentionally tell a search engine robot it wasn't welcome.  Then I remembered.  Usually when I'm first building a site with TypePad, I leave the "Publicize this Weblog" option checked "no".  I'd forgotten to change that to "yes" when I finished the building part.  Ooops.

typepad: Congratulations Bonnie Erickson! - 01/30/08 08:31 AM
Hey, look at that!
Real Estate Blogger and Active Rain Member Bonnie Erickson is today's TYPEPAD FEATURED SITE
Way to go, Bonnie!  Good job!  Ya thinki if I type "YAY!" enough times, this post will count for points?  :-)
Okay.  I can't control myself:  YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY! YAY!

typepad: Online Store: Old Dog, Old Tricks - 12/13/07 07:02 AM
This is, what, Day 5, of my online store challegene?  The preceding episodes are here:
Online Store/E-Commerce
Online Store Brain Dump, Chapter Two
Online Store Brain Dump, Chapter Three
Online Store Brain Dump, Chapter Four
Anyway, I signed up for a trial at Instant eStore as discussed in Chapter Four; it didn't take too long to realize the brain-fit wasn't quite there.  I could see it being a great solution, but I just don't have the time to learn my way around.  Did I say, I wanted a prototype finished by Saturday?  :-)
So, when in a crunch, you go with what you know.  … (4 comments)

typepad: Give Them A Portal - 11/03/07 08:10 AM
I'd thought I'd pass along this idea, in case anyone else finds it useful over the holiday season.
Every now and then there are some big events in people's lives .... weddings, graduations, new babies, anniversaries, reunions, whatever.  And in this digital age, lots of different people take photos or videos of that same event and post the videos on YouTube, and upload the photos to Flickr galleries, Shutterfly galleries, Kodak galleries, and dozens of other places.
To "Give Them A Portal"  all you need to do is create of web page of links to all the various photo galleries and videos that various friends … (6 comments)

typepad: I Spoke Too Soon - 10/29/07 06:53 AM

Yesterday afternoon I was celebrating my new contributing author thingie on http://www.Nelalive.net .  I spoke too soon.  While the sidebar thingie looked great and worked just fine, the individual author landing pages turned out to have some issues with Firefox.  They worked great in Internet Explorer.
I think I can see the issue; but can't quite put my hands on the solution.  It has to do with the way Typepad header modules expand,  and when the expanded code is copied into a new page, somehow FF doesn't render the new page as a web page, FF just displays the html code.
I deleted yesterday's post, … (5 comments)

typepad: My Work Here Is Done. - 10/26/07 03:34 PM
Thank Goodness!!!    Now that Bob Carney has sorted out his move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org  I can stop diddling around with WordPress ... 'cuz I wuz only doing it to see if I could help out.  Carney can take over the WordPress tutorials.
So don't look for any further WordPress posts from me here.  I am going to get back to the job of maintaining my TypePad blogs.   (Oh don't worry, I'm not leaving AR.  You'll still see plenty of Photoshop, photography,  and general commentary posts.  I'm just closing the book on WordPress.)
The one biggie I still need to create in TypePad for http://www.nelalive.net  is some kind … (7 comments)

typepad: Restoring Balance - 10/14/07 03:05 PM
I fiddled with WordPress so much the past few days, I was feeling a bit off kilter.  Time to return to my TypePad roots.
So, this morning, I made a new design in TypePad for NelaLive.  http://www.nelalive.net
Nothing too extreme.  Just a little tease and fluff.  A new improved banner, a fluid main content column.  I still need to tweak the archive pages, but that can wait a bit.  And I still need to code up a contributor widget.
In another week or two I'll tackle http://www.taylorhotsheet .

typepad: Mother Gets A Life - 10/01/07 09:46 AM
Way back in June (!!) Brian Brady made this comment on one of my posts:
"Be careful with that "Rain Kids" moniker. They might start calling you "Da Blogmother." "
I thought it was kind of clever, so I registered the domain name: http://www.dablogmother.com and set up a blog on Typepad.
Other than making a banner, I pretty much just ignored Mother.
Now with all the talk about who owns blog content, I figured just for insurance and safe-keeping, I'd copy my Photography and Photoshop and other tutorials over to Mother.  Not local news or real estate stuff.  Just the tutorial stuff.
Good grief, did I really … (7 comments)

typepad: TypePad: More About TrackBacks - 08/11/07 08:18 AM
The first chapter in understanding TrackBacks is here.
The second chapter goes like this:
When folks send a TrackBack to your blog, nothing happens until you approve the TrackBack.
Log in to your TypePad blog.  Click the Weblogs tab.  You'll see a list of your blogs like this:   Notice the item titled TrackBacks:
Clicking on TrackBacks will take you to a list of your TrackBacks
Unless you APPROVE the TrackBacks they are just sitting there, gathering dust.  To my great embarassment, I recently discovered I had several unapproved TrackBacks sitting in my NELALive blog.  Duuuuhhhh!!
To approve them, place a checkmark to the left of each TrackBack, … (13 comments)

typepad: Typepad: TrackBacks - 08/08/07 06:53 AM
It took me the longest time to figure out TrackBacks.   In case you also look a little blank when someone mentions "TrackBacks" ... here is a little illustrated tour.
My two  demonstration blogs, "Cluttered Shelf" and "Frayed Cuffs" will assist.
Suppose "Frayed Cuffs" wrote a great, incredibly brilliant post.
"Cluttered Shelf" reads the brilliant post, and decides she wants to write her own post about it.  So, "Cluttered Shelf" writes her own post, includes a regular link to the brilliant post, and when finished,  before publishing it, she goes back to "Frayed Cuffs" and clicks "TrackBacks".
Clicking "Trackback" will display the TrackBack URL.
"Cluttered Shelf" selects, and copies this URL  … (9 comments)

typepad: TypePad: Lazy Blogger's Trick For Creating Pages - 07/29/07 06:16 PM
Let's say you have a TypePad blog, but you want it to act more like a website.  It my previous post, I convered the steps to tell TypePad to display a "Page" as the front page of a website, rather than a list of blog posts.
Here's a Lazy Blogger Trick for creating the content for the page.
Sign up for a free Vflyer account.  Create a General Services "marketing" VFlyer for yourself, In Vflyer, click the "Post Flyer" tab, place your curser inside the text box showing the HTML, and click "Copy to Clipboard".
Now, log into Typepad.
Click the "Weblogs" tab, choose the blog you want to … (7 comments)

typepad: TypePad Guest Author: How To Insert An Image - 07/28/07 08:37 PM
Here's how to add images to your TypePad blog post.
Prep work:  Resize your image(s) for faster upload and faster display.  If you are not sure how to resize, here are some articles by Active Rain contributors:  http://activerain.com/action/search/search_results?searchfields=blogs&search=resize+images&commit=Search
Then type (or copy and paste) your article in the "Compose New Post" box.
Place your cursor at the beginning of the line where you want the image to appear.  Click the Image icon.
A dialogue box will open.
At "Choose an Image", click "Browse", and locate the image file on your computer.  If your computer is not displaying thumbnails, and you would like to see them … (3 comments)

Caution: CAT BLOG AHEAD

Including random thoughts on life, art, business, stuff, and occasionally Real Estate.

What is a CAT BLOG?

According to Seth Godin: "Cat blogs are for, by, and about the person blogging. A cat blog is about your cat and your dating travails and your boss and whatever else you feel like sharing in your public diary." Well, I am the boss, my dating years are behind me, but I do love my cats.

Enjoy!
