wordpress: Enabling WordPress Multi-Site - 08/20/10 09:23 AM
Most folks know I've been in the cheering section for WordPress Mu (multiple user) since 2008. For me, it has been a great way to create separate sites for staff members, individual properties, particular neighborhoods, etc.... without needing to setup up a separate hosting account for each. With WordPress 3.0x ALL WordPress installations now have Multi-Site capabilities. (Altho enabling the network function does take a little more manual work than a straight old-school Mu install. Here's a plugin that offers to take most of the manual work out of enabling Multi-Site. I haven't tried it yet.) Having now converted one older

wordpress: Customizing Thesis, Adding a Hairline Border Around Content - 08/01/10 01:31 PM
This morning's challenge: To add a hairline border around the content in a WordPress blog using the Thesis Theme. Styling an element in CSS (cascading style sheet) is simple and straightforward, provided you know the name of the element. If you don't know the name of the element, you have your work cut out for you. Firebug kept giving me #container. Nope, that wasn't it. Nor was #content_box, or .custom#content or any other of a dozen or so different variations I found on the web. Though I suppose all these variation must have worked for someone, or else they wouldn't have

wordpress: Wordpress/Thesis/Creating a separate category page - 07/07/10 09:42 AM
Do you use the Thesis theme on a WordPress.org site? Did you ever want to create a separate page displaying posts in only one category? Maybe you like to write about restaurants in your community, and you'd like one page showing only your restaurant posts? I came across this tutorial on PressMy.biz: http://pressmy.biz/creating-separate-newsletter-page that provides a really simple way to accomplish this with a minimum of coding. There are other ways ... but for the most part, this will get the job done.

wordpress: WPtouch, my new favorite WordPress PlugIN - 04/18/10 07:19 AM
My new favorite WordPress PlugIn is... WPtouch What does WPtouch do? If a visitor comes to your blog/site via a desktop or laptop or netbook computer, WPTouch does ... nothing.... However, if a visitor comes to your site via an iPhoneTM, iPod touchTM, AndroidTM, or BlackBerry StormTM touch mobile device, WPtouch styles your blog/site specifically for viewing with a smart phone. For example, when viewed from a desktop computer, the WordPress-based website for one of the properties we now have in escrow looks like this: When viewed on an iPhone, that same website looks like this:

wordpress: WordPress Thesis Theme: OpenHook Plug-In - 01/26/10 06:27 AM
Are you using the Thesis theme on any of your WordPress(.org) blogs? And you'd like to use "hooks" for custom styling, but you just haven't had time to get up-to-speed- on hooking? :-) The OpenHook Plug In is for you. You can download OpenHook here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/thesis-openhook/ After you upload and install OpenHook, it will add a function to your WordPress Dashboard, like this: The OpenHook control panel looks like this: The hook in the screen is moving the navigation menu from its' default location above the Title-Header to a position below the Title-Header. The steps are: At the

wordpress: Custom Title Banner in Wordpress - 09/30/08 09:31 PM
I'm going to figure you know how to make a text banner in Photoshop, or an image editor of your choice. If not, I'll go back there later. For now, we're just looking at the WordPress code. Did you ever install a WordPress theme that displays your blog's title as simple headline text? Would you like to replace it with an image banner? First step: Create the image. Note: A banner size of 80 pixels in height and 600 pixels wide will probably work for most themes. Upload the image: The proper way would be to FTP into your blog

wordpress: Enlarge Your WordPress Post Box - 06/29/08 06:01 AM
Here's one of those little things that I didn't notice until recently. When you compost a blog post, would you like the size of the post-editor-box to be a bit larger? I often do, especially if I have some images or videos to insert. I just realized, that in WordPress at any rate, the box can easily be enlarged. Click Settings -- over at the far right side of the Dashboard. Then click Writing. The first item is Size of the post box. The default setting is 20 lines. I increased mine to 60 lines .... and it sure feels better now!

wordpress: Cheater's Quickie Guide - 06/27/08 06:18 AM
Welcome to The Cheater's Quickie Guide to updating WordPress (Had you wondering there for a minute, huh?) Over the course of a few years working with technology stuff, I have learned the value of healthy restraint when confronted with the urge to fix something that ain't broke. Nonetheless I was very tired of seeing this little notice at the top of the WordPress dashboard on some of my blogs. Here are the official WordPress instructions detailing the correct way to update http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended But ....I wondered if my Cheater's Quickie Method of updating WordPress would work with the jump from

wordpress: Understanding How Word Press Themes Work - 06/24/08 09:08 AM
A WordPress "Theme" is a pre-designed "skin" that you apply to your WordPress blog to change its appearance without changing the content. You can be Blue Meanie one day and Cutline the next day. You can also further customize any theme by making your own edits to the theme files. You may want the blog's columns to be a little wider to accommodate larger photos. You may want the font for post title headings to be a different color, or a different size. Here's a little background on understanding how themes work, so you can begin customizing: As you browse through

wordpress: Modifying A WordPress Theme - 04/12/08 08:27 AM
Have you spent a lot of time looking for a nice, simple WordPress Theme with a main content column wide enough to accommodate pasting in a VFlyer? I did. Without success. So I ended up making a few simple modifications to Chris Pearson's Cutline Theme. The end result is here: http://www.bobtaylorproperties.com/ I was going to write some tutorials on how to make the changes, but my plate is still a bit crowded. So, instead I zipped up my modified theme files, and anyone who wants to download them, please go right ahead. The zip file is here: http://www.bob-taylor.biz/Cutline_Modified4RE.zip After you upload the theme, it will

wordpress: WordPress 2.5 Anybody Want To Do This? - 04/08/08 06:07 AM
I have been swamped with some complicated year-end stuff for the last several weeks ... but I do have a new install of WordPress 2.5 running on a "practice" site ... here http://www.clutteredshelf.com/ I had an idea. Anybody want to play around with posting on 2.5 just to see what the new interface looks like? If anyone does, just email me or leave a comment here, and I'll send you an author login. Note this is a "sandbox"/"practice" site. It's not one of my business related sites. So don't worry. You can feel free to post nursery rhymes, dummy text, or photos of your hamsters.

wordpress: WordPress 2.5 - 03/23/08 06:26 AM
The newest version of Wordpress.org is scheduled for release the end of this month, (March, 2008). This version is designated 2.5, (2.4 having fallen through the cracks somewhere). I spent some time searching around trying to find some info about the upcoming release. The optiniche blog has quite a bit of information: http://www.optiniche.com/blog/382/wordpress-25-revealed-and-compared-to-version-23x/ Looks like a lot of user interface changes. I'll withhold judgment until I've used it, but right now I'm thinking I won't upgrade all my WordPress blogs right away. I'll upgrade a couple practice blogs first, and work with it for a while. If nothing else, all my tutuorial screen shots will now

wordpress: Download, Install and Use An UNZIP Program - 03/01/08 08:05 AM
A few days ago I started a tutorial series on using FTP, specifically using FTP to upload and install a WordPress plugin. Please note these steps apply for a WordPress.ORG blog, you don't have FTP access if you are using WordPress.COM (Here's the official WordPress explanation of the difference.) If you look at the entire process of installing a plugin, then break it up into "phases", it would look like this: Download, install and set-up an FTP programDownload and unzip the pluginUpload the plugin to your site, and activate it in WordpressThe first post covered Phase 1. Here's Phase 2: Downloading and uzipping the plugin. First

wordpress: Wordpress: Static Page and Blog Page Coexist - 02/16/08 06:27 AM
Thank you, Bob Carney! In case anyone was reading the exchange between Mr. Carney and me here and wasn't quite sure what we were talking about .... let me try to go through it step by step here. You have a WordPress blog with the domain name www.mysite.com ... When people go to that URL the first thing they land on is your blog, which shows your recent blog posts. It changes as you add new blog posts, the newest always on top. But suppose you want the first page people land on when visiting www.mysite.com to be a static page, maybe showing some

wordpress: WordPress: Open On A Static Page/Link To Post Page - 02/13/08 06:50 AM
Here's a question for Wordpress gurus. Someone wants to setup a WordPress blog to function more like a website, so they set a static page as the main page, like this: They click the Options tab, then the Reading tab .... Then under Reading Options -> Front Page -> Front page displays, they select a static page, and then they click Update Options, Okayfine. But suppose they then want to create a navigation link to their blog posts. What does the URL to access blog posts become?? I have tried a number of variations, and haven't come up with the answer. I could probably create another page with

wordpress: WordPress People: It's Update Time Again - 02/08/08 09:12 PM
WordPress released another "urgent security update" a few days ago. http://wordpress.org/development/2008/02/wordpress-233/ http://wordpress.org/download/ Since I currently run seven different WordPress(.org) blogs, updating can be a time-consuming PITA, so I want to do it quickly and painlessly. The only file that needs to be updated to fix the security issue is xmlrpc.php ... However, to make the nag screen go away..... You need to also update version.php found in the wp-includes folder. For good measure, I updated gettext.php, and pluggable.php as well. If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry.... it's a rather insignificant point in the big scheme of things, One other thing, if you used

wordpress: Power Your Domain With WordPress - 01/28/08 08:31 PM
Let's say you have a domain http://www.mysite.com, and let's say you started a WordPress blog in a subdirectory http://www.mysite.com/myblog/ and now that your blog is taking off, you are ready for the blog to become the initial starting page of your domain. Here's how to move things around to make that happen. Login to the WordPress Dashboard, click the Option tab Leave "WordPress address (URL):" alone. Change "Blog address (URL):" to the root domain name http://www.mysite.com/. Click Update Options. Open your FTP utility. From the Wordpress panel, download the core WordPress file index.php to your computer. After downloading, open index.php in a text editor (not MS Word!). You

Do you ever feel like trying out a new WordPress Theme or hacking your present theme ... but you don't want to make your blog inaccessible - or worse yet, scrambled - while you are in the process of testing new themes. This plugin is the answer to your prayers: Theme Test Drive by Vladimir Prelovac Here's how to install and use it. Download the plugin. Unzip/extract using your favorite UNZIP utility. My current favorite is CAMUnzip Upload the plugin folder to your /wp-content/plugins/ folder. I'm using WS_FTP. wordpress: Stuff That Hides In Plain Sight: Hacking A WordPress Theme - 01/16/08 08:02 AM
While this blog post tells of solving a very specific problem, the issue of Stuff Hiding In Plain Sight is certainly not unique to WordPress code. R. Bhavesh recently release a very elegant, professional style, free WordPress theme called WP Premium. I really like it and have installed it on two WordPress blogs, (with a few minor hacks). It is available in three color schemes, and changing out the color scheme is quite easy.... except it took me about 5 hours to see it. Duh. In case anyone else needs a hand, here are my notes: Download and install WP Premium. Here's how to install a theme,
