Community News: This is a Message from your local Realtor: Cheryl S. Miller

The first day of school for students attending Prince Georges County Public Schools will be August 20, 2007. Parents must have their children properly immunized before they are allowed to register. Students entering kindergarten through 9 grade will need to be immunized for Hepatitis B vaccine and chicken pox. Proof of compliance should be documented on the Maryland Immunization Certificate Form #896 or a printout from a licensed doctor. Free immunizations will be given by the county health department in July and the first two weeks in August. Call 301-583-3300 for more details.

Other Washington area school districts have similar requirements. Baltimore City Public Schools will allow proof that an appointment with a doctor has been made and that all vaccinations will be completed within 20 days after schools has started. You may temporarily enroll your child pending receipt of the required immunizations.

National Night Out in Prince Georges County Maryland set for August 7, 2007

National Night Out (NNO) is a community event held every first Tuesday of August across the country and focuses on crime and drug activity prevention. This year's event is set for August 7, 2007. Police, civic associations and community leaders plan an evening of entertainment, education and awareness. It is a perfect oppourtnity for families to get to know their neighbors. If you have not gotten involved in the planning of your communities event please do so.

Last year I participated in the Camp Springs civic association event in Prince Georges County, Maryland. It was very organized with a dj, model car display, pony rides, booths, etc.

DC Hand Dancing is a Growing Tradition

Some call it Swing others call it Huslte or maybe even Stepping but if you grew up in the Washington, DC area in the 50's-60's you called it Hand Dancing. It is also referred to as Jitter Bugging and was done to the big band & jazz sounds of that era.

The dance has now evolved and a younger generation has taken over. Dancers even younger than myself (LOL because I am a baby boomer) are doing it. I first began dancing in 2000 after attending a function where the older guests where given an opportunity to boogie on the dance floor. Because I grew up free-styling I did not know how to Hand Dance so I asked one of the gentlemen at my table to show me. It was very awkward because you had to stay in sync with your partner. Later, I saw a demonstration at Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Virginia. The flyer that was passed out told me where I could take classes. I loved to watch Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers movies, but this dance was a little different. It was done to music that I was more familiar with such as the Temptations and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.

My first class was at Bolling AFB with Buster and Mary. Their method of teaching was a basic 6 count to help students get the feel of the rhythm. Men extended their hand to the female as a gesture to ask for the honor of a dance, which I thought was so cool. The basic steps are left, right, left/left, right/right for the man and right, left, right/right, left/left for the woman. This is so that when the two are standing face to face they are in sync with each other. Men are the leaders of the dance and they give their partners indications with their hands. If done properly, the woman knows when to turn, which direction to turn and if he wants her to do multiple turns. He can lead her forwards or backwards, tell her to pause or dip her. Normally if the male does some fancy footwork, his partner must join him on the second and third set. Then when the song is over the gentleman ESCORTS his partner back to her seat and thanks her for the dance before he goes to ask the next person to dance.

Once I learned the basic and was able to feel the rhythm without counting, I moved on to other instructors to define my own style. Those instructors taught me to be more graceful, spin on a dime, and create my own dance moves. On Saturday mornings, I listen to WPFW's the House Party with Capt'n Fly from 8:00 - 11:00 and then the Andrea Bray Show with Andrea the Hat Lady and her side kick Millie Ware from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. (WPFW is located on your radio dial at 89.3 and is an alternative programing station supported solely by volunteers and contributions they receive from listeners). Hand Dancing is not restricted to music from the 60s-70s. We also dance to more up-to-date tunes from Country, Rock, Blues, Jazz, -, R&B. Some people would be surprise to hear songs from Cher, Bonnie Raitt, and Shania Twain. We do a little salsa, line dancing, cha-cha, walking and free style.

When I am asked why I love to hand dance I generally say: "Because I love the music, it is good exercise, and I have meet some very interesting people. Some are 20 years my senior. Their generation really knew how to have a good time". I even met the love of my life while hand dancing. Most hand dancers don't drink alcohol. We typically drink water or soft drinks. I have had the opportunity to compete. Our group was named Footworks and we took first place in the team competition. With my dance bag and face towel in hand, extra dance shoes in the trunk and a little baby powder, I am always ready for an evening of good clean fun with no drama.

Tradewinds (Camp Springs, MD), The Chateau and The Solar Eclipse(Washington, DC), The Departmental Club (Alexandria, VA) and the Hollywood Ball Room (Silver Spring, MD)

I have been attending this event since I was a young girl. My most memorable experience was seeing Angela Bofill and Regina Bell one year. My son learned an appreciation for music through outings such as this. Sometimes we would set up a little drum set and let him play along with the band. Children are dancing and singing and having a great time.

Chestnut Oaks is an active adult community currently being built in Fort Washington, Maryland. I had the pleasure of touring the facility in its early stages of construction with the builder, Martin Poretsky. His family has been buidling homes over 60 years. This community will have all the bells and whistles with a movie theatre, gym facility and on site trainers to provide classes tailored to seniors, suanas and whirlpool, salon, high tech business center and so much more. They have thought of almost everything. You can get to the nearest metro station in a matter of minutes.

The National Harbor Update ~ Prince Georges County in Fort Washington, Maryland

The sales office opened its doors on June 1, 2007.

Models of the first 450 condos are now being shown. If you have been scheduled to preview the models at the National Harbor, please make sure that you understand how you are being represented. Buyer representation is important. Contact a local Realtor first to accompany you on the preview. Realtors are required by law to explain "Understanding Whom Real Estate Agents Represent" to any potential buyer or seller in the state of Maryland. On site sales staff work for the "Builder" and are not required by law to explain representation to a potential buyer. A new law has been passed which will take effect October 1, 2007, requiring sales staff to be licensed in order to sell real estate. Fireworks in the Nations Capital

The National Fireworks on the Mall can be viewed just about anywhere in the Nations Capitol. Traditional many family spend a great portion of the day on the mall to secure their front row seat.Those families wishing not to spend their day in the hot sun may tend to congregate on one the major bridges such as I-395 or I-295. Although local law enforcement frowns on motorist pulling over on the bridge, these bridges general come to a complete stop during the display, leaving just enough room for light traffic or emergency vehicles to get through. Families choose to watch from these areas to avoid the high volume of traffic.

Arlington, Virginia, has a great spot to enjoy the fireworks on the Mall. One of three great sites is The Iwo Jima located near Rosslyn. .

Passport Requirements Waived Until September

This is an update to a recent post on passport requirements. Read Cheryl's post. On Friday, June 8th, The U.S. State Department temporarily waived the passport requirements for flying abroad, hoping to help summer travelers whose trips may be jeopardized due to the delays of processing passports. Easing the rules should allow the State Department to catch up with the 3 month backlog of applications that has overwhelmed passport processing centers since the rule took effect this year. Until the end of September, travelers will be allowed to fly without a passport if they present a State Department receipt, showing they had applied for a passport, and government-issued identification, such as a driver's license. Individuals who have not yet applied for a passport should not expect to be accommodated said officials.

The Prince Georges County Homeownership Fair was a huge success

The third annual Prince George's County Homeownership Fair held Saturday, June 9, 2007 at the Sports and Learning Complex was a huge success. Hundreds of families came out armed with notepad and pencils in hand to educate themselves on the home buying process. From a Realtors standpoint, there was a lot good information being provided to consumers on credit and various housing programs. Free credit reports were provided and several give aways were drawn to help buyers with closing cost. Much of the material that was provided was written in Spanish. Consumers had the opportunity to speak with various lenders, real estate professionals, new home builders, title and insurance companies. Also on site were representative from different county departments such as the Foster Care program and Clerk of the Court, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), the Small Business Administration, and so much more. Also in attendance was renowned author Gaye Newton who wrote the Path to Homeownership. If you were not able to attend the fair and still would like to know more about the homeownership process, contact a local Realtor, such as myself, and they can advise you on what steps to take and who to contact.

Planning to take a cruise this year but forgot to apply for your passport. The United States Postal Service is now holding weekend Passport Fairs to eliminate the long lines and booked appointment times. Offices in Maryland will be open after normal business hours on Saturday and on Sunday so that consumers may apply for their passports. Normal business activity will not be conducted during the fair. Contact your local post office to see when your office will be open.

To apply you must bring the following items:

Proof of Citizenship: Original documents only (e.g. Birth Certificate, previous passport, or Naturalization Certificate);
Proof of Identity: Driver's License, Government or Military ID;
Photos: Two (2) recent identical Photos
Fees: $97.00 Adults, $82.00 for Minors (15 years and under)

NOTE: Fees must be made in two separate payment forms (by check or money order):

The Post Office will take photos for you for only $15.00;
$30.00 (or $45.00 if photos are taken) made payable to the U.S. Postal Service; and
$67.00 (for adults ) and $52.00 (for minors) made payable to the Department of State.

Speed Limits for the Summer?

I went into the office this morning earlier than normal. As I was driving, I noticed a group of very young children on the corner HORSE PLAYING. They were probably no older than 7-8 years old. Where are their parents I thought? I should be use to this by now but I am not. Most parents in my area must leave early to go to work and allow their children to board the school bus alone. Some having to ride public transportation instead of a private school bus. This particular road also has no sidewalks (safety zones)so the children must stand a short distaces from traffic.

We know how children can be. They get around friends and can bee easily distracted and some times careless. I checked my odometer and realized I was going a little over the speed limit - so I slowed down. School will be letting out soon for the summer and many children will be out riding bikes, playing ball and horse playing. So this was a great reminder for me and I hope it will be for you. Please remember to:

Allow enough time to get to an appointment so tht we are not SPEEDING;
Be more alert when we see signs of children in the area;
Be courteous when pedestrians are in the crosswalk; and
DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT

Memorial Day weekend is soon approaching and will kick off the summer season for 2008. We celebrate this holiday to commemorate U.S. men and women who have died in service during war. I am very fortunate to live in the Nations Capitol and can visit places of interest such as the Tomb of the Unknowns and Arlington National Cemetery. Photo Gallery
