save our homes: Governor Crist Visits Bonita Springs, Fl - Announces Reform For Homeowners - 01/31/07 04:48 AM

In a visit yesterday to Bonita Springs, Florida Governor Charlie Crist announced his plan for property tax reform.
Doubling the homestead exemption from $25,000 to $50,000 and making the homestead exemption portable for people in the Save Our Homes Program are included in his proposal. It would take 3/4 of the legislation to agree to the constitutinal ammendment.
This proposal for property tax reform came one week after Crist signed into law a massive property insurance reform.

What Is "Save Our Homes"?
"Save Our Homes" (SOH) spearheaded by Mr. Wilkinson, approved by Florida voters in 1992, effective January 1, 1995. SOH places a limitation of 3% on annual assessment increases on homestead exempt property. For all property first granted homestead exemption in the prior year, that year's assessed value will be the base value for the implementation of "Save Our Homes". Thereafter, the assessed value will not increase more than 3% or the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index, whichever is less. The property's market value may differ from SOH assessed value.
