Alliston Flu Clinics - 10/31/11 02:00 PM
Its that time of year again. As winter approaches, we are entering another flu season. We can help reduce the spread of influenza through a proactive regimen including frequent good handwashing, covering our coughs and sneezes (or coughing into our elbows), staying home when sick, but the best way to prevent the spread of influenza is to get vaccinated every year. The influenza vaccine is recommended for everyone over the age of six months who is not allergic to the vaccine. A recent study showed that the influenza vaccine results in a reduction of 30,000 visits to hospital emergency departments,

Now is the time to Prepare your Automobile for Winter - 10/28/11 07:18 AM
Its not this bad... YET, but current wisdom advises us to change our summer tires over to winter tires when the average temperature reaches seven degrees Celcius (approx. 45 degrees fahrenheit). It is normally in this temperature range that you will start seeing frosts and black ice in the mornings, and when you will start to appreciate the benefits of winter tires. If you live in an urban area and are not convinced of the benefit of purchasing dedicated winter tires, there has been a new type of "all weather" tire to hit the market the last few years. These

Pay it Forward with UNICEF Canada - 10/24/11 09:12 AM
An old High School Friend had "liked" a UNICEF Canada link on Facebook, and I saw a picture of a UNICEF box that I carried around on Halloween when I was in elementary school many moons ago... It struck a chord in me, and I clicked on the link and saw that the old UNICEF boxes have been replaced by their "new", to me, Virtual Campaign. National UNICEF Day from UNICEF Canada on Vimeo. I clicked on the link to the UNICEF Canada Home Page, investigated a little, and thought this would be a venture worthy of my support. There

Gravity, Ally or Enemy? - 10/20/11 11:44 AM
Charles Buell, a Seattle Washington area Home Inspector shared this very important information that I would like to share with you. As parents and homeowners, it is so easy to forget to look at things through the eyes of children, animals et cetera and target the areas and issues that need addressing. In this post, Charles discusses the placement of a rain barrel, that at first glance looks to take advantage of gravity to use the collected water, ignoring the potential danger. How many similar issues are in each of our own homes? Are you looking to buy and/or sell a

2011 Fire Prevention Week - 10/14/11 08:37 AM
This week is FIRE PREVENTION WEEK. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace any batteries that need replacing. But more than this, why not make up and/or review your Fire Evacuation Plan. It was news to me when I read that thirty years ago, Canadian families were told that on average, they needed 17 minutes to evacuate a burning home and to plan an exit strategy based on that. Today, Fire Prevention Canada is reporting that we have about three minutes to get out of their homes before potential toxic gases can reach fatal levels. Synthetic materials such as

The F Word. - 10/07/11 11:56 PM
A good friend of mine, Malcolm Johnston, shared this powerful message earlier today. It is sometimes "easier" to go with the flavour of the day rather than see the ugly truth... and there are many people starving and dying because of FAMINE in Somalia today. Decide for yourself whether it is worth your time to watch the video, your effort to sign the petition and your money to support the end of suffering and deaths caused by famine. Words a priest said in a homily more than thirty years ago challenged me, to this day resonate in me: "You are either

Choose ECO-FRIENDLY while at the Grocery Store - 10/05/11 11:18 PM
Here are some tips on how you can choose to be a much more ECO-FRIENDLY Shopper while at the Grocery Store: Go Local and Organic - Buying local not only reduces the carbon footprint of your purchase (by reducing the travel and processing impact on our planet), but also helps people in our local communities. Look first for products with a "Canada Organic" logo, then "USDA" organic, indicating that the product contains at least 95% organic ingredients (or vice versa if you live in the U.S). Try Meatless Fridays and/or Mondays - it can take up to 17 lbs of vegetable

Vote in our Federal Election on October 6th, 2011 - be a part of the solution! - 10/05/11 08:07 PM
Tomorrow is Election Day in Canada. I am having a hard time believing that the outcome really represents the cumulative will of the people. We have a hard time in Canada getting a reasonable percentage of eligible voters to the polls most elections, I am not sure if it is because people feel they are too busy, that they feel their vote will not count, or general apathy and malaise or something else. Getting voters out is a first step. I wish people would understand what a privilege and a responsibility voting is. Many have died over the years to protect

Eco-friendly Kitchen Tips - Part Three - 10/04/11 03:18 PM
Could you incorporate any of the following tips in your kitchen? Save energy and some money by: Being Refrigerator frugal - Your refrigerator probably consumes more electricity than any other household appliance. Ice makers and cold water dispensers can increase your energy usage by aver ten percent (consider this when choosing to use them or not). If you have an older fridge with coils in the rear, keep them a couple of inches from the wall, and vacuum/dust them twice a year (the dust build-up reduces efficiency). Using water wisely at the kitchen sink - When cleaning vegetables and fruit,
