I just received a letter from one of my stock funds. It reads:
"We are writing to let you know that computer tapes containing some of your personal information were lost while being transported to an off-site storage facility ... [snip] ... That is why we are offering you and other impacted individuals a free credit monitoring service."
Uhhhhh.... thanks?
I guess I can cancel my current credit monitoring service- which I got the last time my identity was stolen.

If you use a laptop you're bound to have a bundle of personal information that, in the wrong hands, opens you up to massive opportunities for identity theft. There are services that allow you to track your laptop but they tend to have a cost as well as security threats of their own. What to do?
There's a new open-source service that has been developed by the University of Washington and the University of California, San Diego that helps laptop owners track down their missing laptops for free.

I recently posted a story about identity theft. Later, Emily Starbuck Gerson, a writer for CreditCards.com informed me that she had included it in their Top 10 Round-up.
I'm glad she found it news-worthy and hope that it helps others avoid the pitfalls that accompany ID theft.
While at her site I also noticed another article that she scribed. It's at the root of my identity theft situation... it's the Identity Theft and Meth Connection.
She goes into great detail about how the two are linked. It's a good read.

It began with a 5 a.m. phone call; a police detective asked if I knew the whereabouts of my vehicle.
Portable phone in hand, I walked to the garage to feel the crisp November breeze through the open garage door.
“No, but I’m guessing you do.” I replied.
“Yes, Mr. Willman- it’s up on blocks at Pioneer Park… do you know if anything else is missing?”
I surveyed the house; to my relief everyone was safe and accounted for.
