alexandria va: We Were Looking For the Troll Under The Bridge - 09/15/13 08:39 AM

Most of us remember the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and the troll under the bridge.  So today I decided to see if I could find him.
Jones Point Park is on the Virginia side of the Woodbridge Wilson bridge and looking up it is amazing to check out the engineering.  Though there wasn't a troll under the bridge there were plenty of people playing basketball on the courts, walking and riding their bikes.  Perhaps with 250,000 cars crossing over the bridge everyday the troll decided to find a quieter place to live.

alexandria va: Not What You Expect When You Think Light House - 09/15/13 04:31 AM

Most of the time when you think of a light house you picture a tall round structure with a light that could be seen from miles away.
When you see Jones Point Lighthouse in Alexandria VA what you find instead is a small wood building with a light perched on the top. The light house is the one of the last river lighthouses in the country and the only one remaining in the Chesapeake Bay area.  It is located on the Potomac River just south of Alexandria and almost directly under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge that runs across the Potomac … (5 comments)

alexandria va: Winkler Botanical Perserve Perfect For A Quiet Getaway - 09/05/13 09:21 AM
Winkler Botanical Preserve is one of those little treasures those of us who live in urban areas like to find.  Tucked off a busy I-395 you enter a 44 acre preserve containing wildflower meadows, meandering paths, streams and ponds.  Though you can hear traffic sounds faintly in the distance you feel as though you are far away from it all.
The park was established in 1980 by the Winkler family and unlike most of the parks in the Northern Virginia area is managed by a private, non profit organization.  The mission of Winkler Botanical Preserve is to provide education on the … (6 comments)

alexandria va: In Virginia It's George Washington Day Not President's Day - 02/21/11 02:07 AM
Around the country most people are celebrating today as President's Day.  Created in 1971 to honor all of the United States presidents many think the day was only to combine Abraham Lincoln's Birthday and George Washington's Birthday.  However by law it is for all of our past presidents.
In Virginia though the day is officially George Washington Day.  Let's face it when it comes to Virginia history, George Washington was our leading citizen.  With his home Mount Vernon a living monument to his presence in our area.   Fairfax County also has other historic monuments standing as part of George Washington's … (18 comments)
