blogging: Julie Andrews and Blogging -What do They Have in Common - 12/17/09 08:07 AM
My family will tell you that if there is one habit they would like to break me of it is my ability to randomly start signing a refrain of a song for no apparent reason. This week while knocking out eight more hours of continuing education a couple of attendees approached me on break and said; "I read your blog." Sure enough within a few minutes, as I was mulling over the fact that we truly don't know who is reading our blog, a Rogers and Hammerstein Song (sung by Julie Andrews) popped into my head : "Getting to Know YOU Getting

blogging: Blogging-Is There a Point of Diminishing Returns? - 06/13/09 11:20 AM
Any well trained athlete will tell you that there is a point where no extra time spent training will make you stronger or faster. They develop a routine that works and they stick with it. They are consistent. They don't change their routine because they think they will dominate the competition by adding an extra hundred pounds to the bar bell or starting running sprints when it is a marathon they are trying to win. There is a point of diminishing returns with almost any activity we undertake and blogging might be one of them. I'm a fairly steady blogger. Usually on

blogging: Bloggers-Keeping the Art of Story Telling Alive - 05/27/09 08:57 AM
Growing up we were fortunate to have grandparents who enjoyed telling stories about their lives. We learned about the Native Americans who used to camp at my grandparents farm in the Kickapoo Valley in Wisconsin and about losing your business during the depression in a small town in northeast Arkansas. Some of the stories we heard were second and third generation stories about relatives we would never have the chance to meet and of course there were the stories about our parents antics that they wish had been kept buried in the family vaults. But the great part was that not only

blogging: Re-Blogging, Re-Posting or Serial Posting-Why Do We Care? - 02/22/09 11:09 AM
At least once a day is seems that a member of Active Rain has a concern about how another person creates their posts. Whether it is how and why we re-blog, whether a person should be allowed to blog the same post multiple times in a row or whether re-posting your own or a team members post should be allowed. The bigger question to me is "why do we care?" Everyone approaches the Active Rain network in a different way. For some it is a social network to connect with other agents, for others it is a forum to learn and for

blogging: Spending Your Morning at the Local News Station - 01/22/09 04:23 PM
It has been a wild week in Washington DC. First there was the Oprah Show, then it was all of the excitement around the Inauguration and the week ended in the Fox 5 TV station for a taping. How much excitement can one simple girl from the suburbs take? I'm waiting to see how the taping comes out. It has gone to editing and should be available next week. If it isn't to embarrassing I'll put a link to it on my blog. What I did learn is that the Fox 5 news set is smaller than it looks on TV

blogging: Go Green on Active Rain-Recycle Old Posts for New Use - 01/08/09 01:02 PM
Going green is all the rage. Most of us are good recyclers of paper, plastic and cans but do you know you can go green and recycle your Active Rain posts as well? It happens to all of us. We hit a wall when original thoughts start to disappear. We think if we have to write another post about a local neighborhood or another view of the current housing crisis that we might just quit blogging all together. This is when your Active Rain archives can come to the rescue. Looking through old posts allows you the opportunity to find potential

blogging: What a Market Report Doesn’t Tell You - 11/26/08 06:19 PM
Market reports are easy to create. You go to the MLS, put in the name of a subdivision, a period of time and up pops the data. Play around with the numbers a little bit and you can show the increase or decrease of the value of homes in the neighborhood and you are done. It doesn't take a lot of thought and you can churn them out by the dozens on any given day. What worries me about market reports are all the information they leave out. First most of the time agents don't look beyond the MLS for their numbers.

blogging: Three Must Have’s on Your Active Rain Subscriber List - 11/24/08 06:43 AM
When Active Rain has a "wild turkey" or two running around the server room, when there are changes made to the user interface or the introduction of new functionality, dozens of posts immediately appear asking "what is going on?" The solution to knowing what is happening with our beloved social network is to subscribe to Bob Stewart, Brad Andersohn and Rich Jacobson's blogs. Whenever the system has gone down or a change is coming these three guys are the ones in the know. They are other great folks on the Active Rain team that we don't hear from often but I

blogging: Social Media Panel at NAR 2008 - 11/10/08 08:09 AM
Among the hugs and high fives of meeting other Active Rain members from around the country at NAR there was also a great exchange of information. The following is a clip from the social media panel. All of the panelists shared a number of ways that they were using social media to make connections within their community and with their customers. Here are just a few thoughts from the panel.

blogging: Harlan Makes An Appearance at the Active Rain Party in Orlando - 11/09/08 08:58 AM
The room was abuzz last night at the Active Rain party in Orlando. As bloggers from around the country were able to meet face to face the question that was on everyone's mind was "would Harlan make and appearance?" If you were paying attention you saw him quietly sneak into the room and one by one begin to erase all of the photos from our digital cameras. It was obvious that he did not want anyone to know he was there. Every picture I took of him came up blank this morning as I tried to download evidence of his existence. And

blogging: When is a Copyright Violation Not a Violation? - 10/21/08 09:26 AM
When no one bothers to enforce it. Recently Kristal Kraft wrote a terrific post on one way that agents can keep track of the content of their websites and blogs using Copyscape. Lenn Harley has written multiple posts on her experience dealing with agents who steal her copyrighted maps. There are multiple ways for the "little" guys, individual agents to keep track of violations of their copyrights that we can all use at little cost. However who enforces the copyright violations of the big guys? Who keeps watch on the lifting of verbiage and pictures from National, State and County websites? Do

blogging: Cornbread and Biscuits-Learning to Master the Basics First - 09/22/08 03:20 PM
This past week a small group of Corcoran Gallery of Art members had the privilege of listening to a talk and attending a private reception featuring Duff Goldman. Now some of you will instantly know who Duff is and others may be scratching your heads. If you live in Baltimore MD you will know him as the Baker/Owner of Charm City Cakes. If you watch the Food Network you will know him as the gregarious host of Ace of Cakes. Duff is one of those unassuming young entrepreneurs that you would pass on the street and not know the genius that lurks

blogging: Sweet Whisperings in My Ear - 08/19/08 08:25 PM
The phone carried the message that every blogger likes to hear....."I read your blog and we'd like to meet you in person." We made an appointment to meet on Saturday morning in Belmont Bay. We talked and looked at properties. The next morning they called again and said "we really liked your honesty and knowledge of the area, do you have time to show us more properties?" Tonight we wrote an offer. This blogging thing really works!

blogging: Is Blogging Your Business? - 08/16/08 10:10 PM
Every day browsing through Active Rain and other Social Networking sites you see the question raised "will blogging bring me leads?" And the answers are as varied as the bloggers who respond. When you go back in time through the Active Rain archives you can see what may have stated as simple shift has turned into a major tipping point. Bloggers from 18 to 24 months ago seemed to be more focused on making connections and asking questions about real estate. Today there are more posts asking about SEO, long tail, keywords and hyper-local blogging.Blogging isn't our business. Real estate is.

blogging: Words of Encouragement for New Bloggers - 08/06/08 12:53 PM
Most of us need to occasional hear or in the case of blogging read that the efforts that we put into our blogs will lead to connections with consumers, community leaders and other local authorities. Whenever a new blogger post on Active Rain it is always great to see the number of people who stop by and say hello. We read about the success that Active Rain has brought to the businesses of many of the agents, loan officers and stagers and I know in the beginning of my blogging days it helped me know that some interesting things could occur

blogging: Active Rain Makes a Big Splash - 08/01/08 07:51 AM
I've never been shy about dancing in the rain whether it is a spring shower or a successful closing from Active Rain. Last night after an early evening closing I took a few minutes to reflect on the end of July and how had blogging added to my bottom line. If you think the bottom line is all about money it isn't. At least to me it isn't. Don't get me wrong money is required to be able to pay the bills and plan for retirement but it isn't the only benefit we can get from blogging. I've met some great

blogging: Virginia Bloggers Brawl moving on to the Elite Eight - 03/20/08 10:09 PM
If the real March madness isn't enough to hold your attention then join in the fun and check out what is happening at the Virginia Association of Realtors Blogger Brawl. There has been lots of good natured fun poked at all of the blogs and bloggers who have participated in the event from the first day.We are down to the elite eight and there are a few Virginia Bloggers still standing. However out of the final eight there are only three Virginia bloggers left. Yikes how can you have a Virginia Brawl and not have any Virginian's left at the end? The infamous or

blogging: Let's Get Ready To Rumble-VARBuzz Blog Brawl - 03/03/08 11:08 PM
Alright folks it is time to pull out all the stops. The Virginia Association of Realtors® Director of Communications & New Media and major blog supporter, Ben Martin has created a little bit of a contest among bloggers across the country to participate in a little blogging brawl. Good old fashioned match of wits and determination. Now I noticed that Brian Block is offering free booze for votes. I'm checking to see this is a possible RESPA Violation and certainly I'm sure this is violation of Virginia liquior laws so we might be watching him blog from jail in the future. Just kidding Brian! So if
