Growing up in Springfield VA meant many a weekend trip with my mom or dad to Fischers Hardware. The store first opened by the Fischer Family almost 60 years and it was the place to go to find anything you needed for your home.The store moved a few times over the years and when I was renovating my parents home in the late 90's, Fischers was always my first stop. Long before Homer Simpson made the TV town of Springfield famous, before the Springfield Interchange was created or Slug lines came to town their was a small ‘country” highway stop fifteen miles outside of DC that would come to be known as Springfield Virginia. In 1946 the developer Edwin Carr realized that their was a huge piece of undeveloped land, close enough to DC to be appealing to government workers who worked in town and that would provide space for larger homes than were currently available in Arlington or Alexandria. In Northern Virginia you can turn just about any corner and run across a “mega” store. When it comes to building and remodeling supplies everyone knows about the competition between the folks in the blue aprons and those in the orange ones. There is no doubt that when it comes to the basics these stores have loads of variety and if you can find it yourself you can be in and out in no time.
