fisher house: New Wounded Warrior Retreat To Be Built in Loudoun County VA - 03/29/12 12:05 PM

The groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Boulder Crest Retreat in Bluemont Virginia is scheduled for Memorial Day 2012. The 37.5 acre retreat is being designed to create an accessible environment for wounded warriors and their families to be able to spend time away from military hospitals and enjoy time outdoors.
According to the Boulder Crest website the retreat will feature:
"ADA handicap accessible “greentech” cabins, available for 2-7 days for approx. 250-500 families per annum.
An ADA handicap accessible “greentech” barn/meeting house with organic farm-to-table meals.
A walled organic Victorian garden, plus a field of organic produce.

The Fisher House Foundation was established in to provide a "comfort home" for military families who need a place to stay while a loved one is being treated for injury or illness at a military hosptial. Started as a public-private partnership in 1990, Fisher Houses around the country provided a home away from home for over 12,000 families.Now Fort Belvoir will be the site of the newest Fisher House in Virginia. fisher house: Please No Cards To "A Recovering Solider" At Walter Reed-They Won't Be Delivered - 12/14/10 07:23 PM

Unfortunately a good sentiment does not equal the delivery of a holiday card to a wounded solider at Walter Reed Hospital. This rumor comes up again every year about this time and takes on a life of its own.
There is a program called Holdiay Mail for Heros sponsored by the Red Cross and Pitney Bowes which provided for the mailing of cards to soliders overseas. The deadline for those cards was December 10th. If you see a post suggesting you send a card to "A Recovering Solider" at Walter Reed please have them read the information on Snopes.com.
