fort belvoir relocation: Don't Forget To Look Up When You're Getting Your Home Ready To Sell - 03/06/12 02:36 PM
The weather is starting to get warm in Woodbridge and if you are thinking about selling your home it's time to think curb appeal. It's fairly easy when you are walking up to the door of your home to look at the lawn or the flower beds and know what to do. Edge the curb and sidewalk. Add fresh mulch and spring flowers. Ferilize, weed and mow the lawn. But don't forget to look up.Have checked what's going on at the eaves of your home? You might be surprised. This home in Woodbridge has a wasp nest left from last year

fort belvoir relocation: Spending Time In the Design Center When You Buy New Construction - 02/17/12 10:29 AM
One of the most fun and often overwhelming parts of buying new construction in Prince William County Virginia is picking all of your options for your home. The builders design center contains thousands of choices for flooring, tile, faucets, sinks and even the handles you want on your cupboards. It's an experience that can take hours to complete and you will change your mind a dozen times as you pull together all of the possible combinations. An important thing to keep in mind as you sort though all your choices is your budget. As part of your purchase contract you may

fort belvoir relocation: When The Phone Rings The Memory Of A Past AR Post Leaps To Mind - 02/16/12 11:07 AM
It was 8 AM when the phone rang. Since I was only half-way through my first cup of coffee it took a minute for the number to register. It was an overseas number. Quick answer it.Sure enough the call was from a family in Germany who would be relocating to the DC area. Top of their list from where to live was schools. And not just any school, a school that offered a German language immersion program. BAM! Localism post to the rescue. A few years ago I wrote a post on registration for the language immersion programs at Fairfax County

fort belvoir relocation: Tuesday Stroll In Northern Virginia-Wandering the Grounds Of Woodlawn Plantation - 10/04/11 03:57 PM
Woodlawn Plantation is just a few miles from George Washington's home of Mount Vernon and there is a reason for that. Woodlawn Plantation was built for George Washington’s grand-daughter Nelly Custis-Lewis. The home is a classic Federal brick home built between 1800-1805. The home was designed by William Thornton who also designed the US Capitol in Washington DC only 20 miles north along the Potomac River. The estate was originally comprised of over 2,000 acres and if you stand at the top of Gray's Hill you can still catch a gilmpse of the Potomac River in the distance. Just like many of

fort belvoir relocation: Explore the Charlestown Townhouse Community In Springfield Virginia - 09/24/11 07:04 PM
They say that fine wine ages well. The same thing can be said for the townhouse neighborhood of Charlestown in West Springfield. Maybe it is the all brick construction or the tree lined streets that make it standout from other area neighborhoods. It might even be the residents of the neighborhood who have a strong home owners association which even maintains the exterior of the townhouses. But whatever the combination it has worked well for 40 years.Anytime you read an MLS description for Charlestown you will see somewhere the words "dramatic curved staircase." Having lived and owned a townhouse in the

fort belvoir relocation: Living in Northern Virginia Without A Car-Can It Be Done? - 09/17/11 05:41 PM
Next week is Transit Week in Virginia. This event has happened every year since 2005 and it is a challenge for Virginian's to use our wide variety of public transportation options instead of jumping into their car. Many folks will shake their heads and say there is NO WAY you can live in this area without a car. My daughter and her husband live in Alexandria, don't own a car and get around Northern Virginia with very few problems. How do they manage? First and foremost is planning. They have studied the bus schedules and keep them handy on their phones when

fort belvoir relocation: Relocating to Northern Virginia As Part of BRAC 05 & Fort Belvoir Expansion? - 09/15/11 03:56 PM
The last five years have brought a lot of changes to the Northern Virginia landscape. If you live near Fort Belvoir, the old Fort Belvoir Engineering Proving Grounds or the Marc Center in Alexandria you can't help but notice all of the new buildings. The movement of new people into the area and realignment of work centers has been going on for sometime and still continues with moves that could take until 2015 in some areas. Recently the Washington Examiner interviewed me for an article; "Local resources offer help for BRAC Families" regarding some of the assistance I've provided to families

Earlier this week I posted the Charlestown in West Springfield VA Community Profile. Today we are going to look at 2011 sale in the neighborhood. The first thing to remember about any neighborhood is there are a variety of home styles and finishes which will impact the sales price of any home. If you are thinking about selling your home in Charlestown remember that a market report will not necessarily be the sales value of your home. And he replied all the better to catch fish with. Based on size I suspect this Osprey is one of our resident males. We are fortunate to live right on the edge of a wildlife refuge at the convergence of the Occoquan and Potomac Rivers. Almost every day we get to watch and listen to multiple pairs of Osprey and their now almost grown youngsters. Only a few more weeks and they will be pushing the youngsters off to find their own territories.

fort belvoir relocation: Thinking Of Renting When You Come To Fort Belvoir Or NGA? Let Me Be Candid With You - 07/22/11 01:15 PM
We hear a lot of talk about it being a "buyer's market" in Northern Virginia. That may or may not be true depending on where you want to live. But without a doubt it has become a Landlord's market when it comes to rentals close to Fort Belvor or the new NGA facilty in Springfield. At least two or three times a week I get an email request from someone relocating to the area. They want a reasonable commute to Fort Belvoir, NGA or access to public transportation to DC. Easy enough to do. Then the hard part or perhaps the reality

fort belvoir relocation: Rippon Lodge-One Of The Least Recognized Historic Spots in Northern Virginia - 06/24/11 08:20 AM
Rippon Lodge is probably one of the least known yet the oldest colonial houses still standing in Northern Virginia. Built in 1747 Rippon Lodge is small and simple compared to George Washington's home Mount Vernon only a few miles away, yet the connection between the two properties runs deep. Richard Blackburn the original owner of Rippon Lodge was the architect that designed the original home at Mount Vernon. To add to the connection between the families, one of Lt. Col. Thomas Blackburn's daughters married Bushrod Washington (nephew of George Washington) and a granddaughter married John Augustine Washington, George's brother.

fort belvoir relocation: A Sign of The Times-A Change At The "Wives" Club At Fort Belvoir - 06/14/11 03:29 PM
For years military installations across the US have offered the fellowship for the "wives" of active duty and retired military though the "wives" club. However today's military spouses aren't always "wives". At Fort Belvoir there has been a name change to reflect the new status of the dependents of those eligible to participate in the Officers Wives Club. The new club name is the Officer Spouses Club. Though the club membership has been available to men for many years the name did not reflect the open door policy. Now it is official and the board members hope the name change will
