A view of the full painting on the former DC Reformatory located in Lorton VA.

Every once in awhile I get a chance to sneak behind the fences at the former DC Reformatory in Lorton VA.  Helps that I'm a volunteer at the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center which continues to expand on the former prision site.  The artwork created by prisoners can be found both on the exterior of some of the buildings but in some of the former dormitories of the prison as well.

lorton workhouse arts center: Good Fences Made Good Neighbors-The Former DC Reformatory In Lorton VA - 09/19/11 10:41 PM

This photo shows just one of the brick walls that surrounded the DC Reformatory in Lorton VA.  What many folks new to the Lorton area don't know is that the bricks used to make these wall and the buildings of the former DC Reformatory were produced by the inmates themselves. The eight brick kilns on the property were  considered some of the best on the east coast and between 1925-1927 it is estimated the inmates made over 4.2 million bricks.  The kilns were located on the banks of the Occoquan River making it easier for bricks not used for the … (10 comments)

lorton workhouse arts center: Speechless Sunday-Hopefully It Was A Friendly Rivalry - 01/09/11 05:44 PM
Earler this week I posted a photo of artwork on the wall at the former mens dormitory at the DC Reformatory in Lorton VA.This is the first painting in support of the Chicago Bulls.
There was a second painting in the same men's dormitory on the opposite wall.

These could have been done by the same artist as the style and certainly the colors are similiar. < Being inside a prison we can hope that the artwork inspired friendly rivalry during games and nothing more.

lorton workhouse arts center: Wordless Wednesday-Art Therapy To Help Pass The Time Behind Bars - 01/05/11 08:10 PM

While attended a ground breaking ceremony for  Phase II of the conversion of the former DC Reformatory at Lorton I got a sneak peak inside of one of the old mens dormitories.  On the walls were a couple of paintings done by former inmates. The construction crews will be working around the painting so they can be preserved as part of the conversion of this space to a new kids art center.   Obviously the inmates had plenty of time and talent to create this tribute to the Chicago Bulls.

Included in a recent Speechless Sunday post was the photo on the right.  The question was did anyone know what this is?  A few people were on an interesting track when they said incinerator and jail. The photo shows the only remaining brick kiln used by inmates at the DC Reformatory formerly located in Lorton VA to produce the bricks used to build many of the structures and walkways at the reformatory. In 1925 the brick kilns were considered some of the best on the east coast and in 1927 it is estimated the inmates made over 4.2 million bricks.  The … (18 comments)

lorton workhouse arts center: Wordless Wednesday-Your Services Are No Longer Needed - 12/30/09 04:41 PM

Fortunately for the residents of Lorton (VA) the guard towers at old reformatory now stand only as a "decorative" element surrounding the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center.  When the prison closed Fairfax County and local developers worked together to save many of the original brick buildings while at the same time creating Lorton Station and surrounding communities.
If you are relocating to Northern Virginia give me a call at 703-346-2213. Let me show you not only the Lorton area but properties througout Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax and Prince William County.  Put my "native" knowledge of the local area to work for … (9 comments)

lorton workhouse arts center: Earth Day-A Focus on the Three “R’s” - 04/19/09 04:57 PM
This week with Earth Day falling on Wednesday provides everyone the opportunity to take a closer look at the three "R's"; Recycle, Reuse and Reduce in their homes and communities.  To help celebrate the week I've decided to highlight places, homes or projects in my area where I've seen some great examples of the three "R's and share them with you.  Some may be "recycled" posts, which seems appropriate given the theme of the week.
My first highlight of the week is the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center.  For over 100 years Lorton was an area that most residents of Northern Virginia … (2 comments)

lorton workhouse arts center: Lorton Workhouse Arts Center-Have You checked it Out Yet? - 01/26/09 04:21 PM
If not then you are missing your chance to be impressed by the transformation of the former prison site in Lorton VA.   For over 100 years Lorton was an area that most residents of Northern Virginia went out of their way to avoid, especially at night.  The prison site was eerie and the two lane road past the prison was dark.    Now on Friday nights you can stop in for a flame working demonstration by renowned artist, dance a little cha-cha-cha with a Latin band or enjoy an art show while sipping a glass of wine.  Want to learn how to … (10 comments)
